Growing Faster and Better
As farming technology grows smarter, robots are emerging to advance smart agriculture worldwide. In addition to GEAIR, a domestically made model, many other innovative robots are being developed across the globe. They operate continuously at a low cost, ensuring full and consistent area coverage.
GEAIR
GEAIR is the world’s first robot capable of completing the entire crop breeding (培植) process. It significantly accelerates and improves the efficiency of hybrid breeding. Success in hybrid breeding relies on performing repeated cross-pollination (授粉) within a short window before flowers bloom. The team addressed key challenges like navigating foliage and detecting stigmas by training a model with 12,800 images. GEAIR achieves 85.1% accuracy in identifying target structures and completes pollination in just 15 seconds per flower.
Vulcan
This weeding robot uses bright lights and a fast camera to take clear images, making sure it spots and removes weeds accurately. It targets weeds without harming crops, using powerful, high-speed actuators for reliable results. Farmers can control it easily from inside the cab and make quick changes.
TerraSentia
TerraSentia is a fully automated robot that monitors crops during growth. This helps improve farmers’ understanding of plant health and productivity throughout the season. This enables them to breed crops with better drought resistance and stable production.
◆ Virgo
Virgo is a tomato-picking robot. With sensors cameras as its eyes, and an AI “brain”, it can operate in large commercial greenhouses at any hour, detecting which tomatoes are good enough to harvest. Its gentle arm picks tomatoes without harming the plants and is safe for people nearby. The robot’s “fingers” are made from food-safe, easy-to-clean plastic.
21. Why are speed and accuracy especially important for GEAIR
A. To lower overall cost. B. To achieve full coverage.
C. To ensure high-quality blooming. D. To meet narrow pollination window.
22. Which robot is specifically described as self-operating
A. GEAIR. B. Vulcan. C. TerraSentia. D. Virgo.
23. What shared feature do Virgo and Vulcan have
A. Gentle handling. B. Reliable navigation. C. Smart appearance. D. Consistent performance.
B
As a senior resident, I often distributed poems to my team, printing and posting them above the computers in our hospital workrooms. Once, during a rare quiet moment in the ICU, with permission from my colleagues, I read a couple of poems out loud. I remember watching my colleagues’ eyes close and their bodies visibly relax as the words washed over them.
Since then, I have shared poems — my own and others’ — in talks at my institution and across the country. I’ve also led other healthcare providers in creative writing exercises during workshops, lectures and classes. Many institutions host book clubs, story slams, film screenings and other opportunities for medical learners to engage with the humanities (人文学科).
While poetry can be frightening to some, many contemporary poems provide approachable emotional experiences. Pieces like Safiya Sinclair’s “Notes on the State of Virginia” fully illustrate how a place that seems innocent or even beautiful to some can be upsetting to others. Monica Sok’s “ABC for Refugees” powerfully paints a portrait of a young child caught between languages and cultures — a reality that many pediatric (儿科的) patients face. “Ode to Small Towns” by Tyree Daye overturns common assumptions about rural life. In “Medical History”, Nicole Sealey shares a patient’s perspective on a part of health care that, for many of my students and colleagues, has been reduced to a series of check boxes on a computer screen. These and other poems provide fertile ground for enhanced understanding of the human condition, as well as inspiration for a clinician’s own potentially transformative reflective writing.
The possibilities for cooperation between literature and medicine are wide open. I believe all clinicians have a role in recognizing and dealing with how everyone has been shaped by an unreasonable society. The history, sociopolitical context, imaginative perspective and reflective practices the humanities offer may improve the practice of medicine. Through understanding others’ experiences and reflecting critically on their own, every clinician can move closer to being the kind of healer they intend to be.
24. What can we infer about the author's practice of sharing poems
A. It started in the ICU and has expanded to multiple settings.
B. It focuses only on creating original poems for medical teams.
C. It has replaced other humanities activities in medical institutions.
D. It is mainly carried out through public lectures across the country.
25. Whose poem may change people's beliefs about the countryside
A. Monica Sok’s. B. Tyree Daye’s.
C. Safiya Sinclair’s. D. Nicole Sealey’s.
26. What does Nicole Sealey’s work seem to imply
A. Doctors should have better medical skills.
B. It's urgent to upgrade the medical equipment.
C. There's room for improvement in medical care.
D. A patient can be treated from different perspectives.
27. Which statement does the author probably agree with
A. The humanities help make a better doctor.
B. The clinicians are to shape our future society.
C. Doctors must learn from each other’s experiences.
D. Reflective writing greatly benefits a doctor’s skills.
C
Albert Einstein’s 1915 masterpiece The Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity is the first and still the best introduction to the subject, but it probably wouldn’t be publishable in a scientific journal today. Why not After all, it undoubtedly would pass the tests of correctness and significance. And while it’s believed that the paper was incomprehensible to its first readers, in fact many papers in theoretical physics are much more difficult. As the physicist Richard Feynman wrote, “There was a time when the newspapers said that only 1.2 men understood the theory of relativity, which is not true. After reading the paper, a lot of people understood the theory of relativity in some way or other, certainly more than 1.2.”
No, the problem is its style. It starts with a leisurely philosophical discussion of space and time and then continues with an explanation of known mathematics. Those two sections, which would be considered extraneous today, take up half the paper. Worse, there are zero citations of previous scientists’ work, nor are there any graphs. Those features might make a paper not even get past the first editors.
A similar process of professionalisation has transformed other parts of the scientific landscape. Requests for research time at major laboratories are more strictly structured. And anything involving work with human objects, or putting instruments in space, involves piles of paperwork.
We see it also in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the Nobel Prize of high school science competitions. In the early decades of its history, the winning projects were usually the sort of clever but naive, amateurish efforts one might expect of talented beginners working on their own. Today, polished work coming out of internships at established laboratories is the norm.
These professionalising tendencies are a natural consequence of the explosive growth of modern science. Standardisation and system make it easier to manage the rapid flow of papers, applications and people. But there are serious downsides. A lot of unproductive effort goes into jumping through bureaucratic hoops (繁文缛节).
Of course, Einstein would have found his way to meeting modern standards and publishing his results. Its scientific core wouldn’t have changed, but the paper might not be the same taste to read.
28. According to Richard Feynman, which statement about Einstein’s 1915 paper is true
A It attracted few professionals. B. It turned out to be comprehensible.
C. It needed further improvement. D. It was a classic in theoretical physics.
29. What does the underlined word “extraneous” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Unrealistic. B. Imprecise. C. Unattractive. D. Irrelevant.
30. According to the author, what is affected as modern science develops
A. The selection of young talents. B. The evaluation of laboratories.
C. The principle of scientific research. D. The application of research findings.
31. Which would be the best title for this passage
A. How to write quality papers B. Will science be professionalised
C. Could Einstein’s Work Get Published Today D. How will modern science make advances

Natural disasters like earthquakes usually cause interruptions to communications, posing great challenges to rescue efforts. So in 2008, China launched the Tiantong Project to set up a satellite communication system accessible to the public.
Now the project has led to major advances in satellite communication and mobile phone development. In 2021 the Tiantong satellites formed a network covering the entire Asia-Pacific region. In August, 2023, Huawei released the world’s first smartphone that supported satellite calls, by directly connecting to the Tiantong satellites. On December 18, 2023, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit Gansu, causing widespread communication interruptions. Thanks to the Tiantong satellites, many of those trapped in the disaster were able to connect with the outside world through the satellite calling function on their smartphones.
Direct satellite connectivity for mobile phones was previously believed to be impossible. To reach a small smartphone, the satellite needs to produce a very powerful signal. When a large number of different high-power signals flood the satellite’s transmitting antenna(传输天线)at the same time, they can lower the quality of satellite calls and, in severe cases, cause the entire system to collapse. Since the 1970s, nearly all the previous commercial communication satellite networks have experienced such major failures. This issue, known as PIM, was once a bottleneck for further development of satellite communication technology.
To solve this problem, Chinese physicists have established a physical model that can predict the occurrence of PIM with incredible accuracy. Based on this work, Chinese scientists developed the world’s first PIM simulation(模拟)software, which, in turn, helped Chinese engineers develop a series of effective technologies against PIM. These key scientific and technological breakthroughs enable the Tiantong satellites to transmit and receive electromagnetic(电磁)waves in 800 different frequency bands and, meanwhile, resist daily temperature changes of up to 160°C.
Solving the PIM problem in such tough working conditions is extremely challenging. The success of Tiantong exhibits the hard work of the project team and marks China’s leading position in this technical field around the globe.
32. What was probably the original intention of the Tiantong Project
A. To promote mobile phone development.
B. To build a natural disaster rescue system.
C. To develop commercial satellite technology.
D. To build an emergency communication system.
33. What is the primary cause of PIM
A. Collapse of the systems. B. Overload of strong signals.
C. Lack of physical models. D. Equipment of low qualities.
34 What does the author want to prove by mentioning previous satellite networks
A. The risk of satellite networks. B. The necessity of solving PIM.
C. The fault of satellite networks. D. The difficulty of solving PIM.
35. What plays a key role in the success of the Chinese team
A. Their close cooperation. B. The powerful satellites.
C. Their accurate prediction. D. The PIM software model.

Previous studies had shown plants shake slightly when under stress. ____36____ By studying tomato and tobacco plants in an acoustic chamber (隔音室) inside a greenhouse, researchers at Tel Aviv University discovered that it’s true. Plants cry out for help through ultrasonic sounds (超声) carried through the air.
“____37____ Also, each plant and each type of stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound,” researchers said in a news release from the university. “While impossible for humans to hear, the sounds produced by plants can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects.”
Human adults can only hear frequencies up to 16 kHz researchers said, but ultrasonic microphones placed about 10 centimeters from each plant used in the study detected sounds at frequencies between 20 and 250 kHz. ____38____ “Unstressed plants produced less than one sound per hour, on average,” researcher Lilach Hadany said, “while the stressed plants produced dozens of sounds every hour.”
“Our findings suggest that the world around us is full of plant sounds, and that these sounds contain information like water loss,” Hadany said. “We assume that in nature the sounds produced by plants are sensed by animals nearby. ____39____”
This could prove particularly beneficial in the agriculture industry, as researchers noted in their publication that “more precise irrigation (灌溉) can save up to 50% of the water costs and increase the outputs.” Nowadays, climate change continues to increase the intensity and frequency of droughts. ____40____ Thus, this ability could only get more important.
A. That means plants are much more sensitive to stress.
B. We found plants usually produce sounds when stressed.
C. The more stressed plants were, the more they screamed.
D. Plus, the world continues to deal with food security issues.
E. Humans are also likely to hear and make use of those sounds.
F. But scientists debate if such movements become sound waves.
G. Those animals can hear the high frequencies and get relevant information.

Sitting on a chair in a beautiful garden, an old man seemed sad about the sorrows he’d received in life. His son and daughter-in-law were too busy with work to take good care of him, and he remained dissatisfied with the situation. The joints of his legs had become stiff (僵硬的). His health was poor and he was always in a bad mood. All these prevented him from enjoying anything.
At that time, a 6-year-old boy appeared. Hearing the old man coughing, the child came to him. Extending his hand towards the old man, the boy said with joy, “Look! Look! What I have found!” Looking into the boy’s hand, the old man saw a withered (枯萎的) rose flower, half of the petals (花瓣) having fallen off.
Seeing such a withered flower, the old man showed impatience and wanted the boy to leave. So, without answering anything, he turned his face to the other side so that the boy would go away after seeing his impatience. However, instead of leaving, the boy went closer and brought the withered flower to his nose, “Oh! It smells so good!”
Then the boy said to the old man, “Do you want such a nice flower It smells so nice! If you want this flower, I’ll give it to you!” Now the old man got really annoyed. Thinking that if he took the flower, the boy would go away later, the old man put on a forced smile, saying, “OK, son! If it’s such a beautiful flower, then give it to me!” Saying this, he started to take the flower.
The child happily extended his hand, but he couldn’t recognize where the old man’s extended hand was. The flower fell on the ground instead of falling into the old man’s hand. The boy was blind in both eyes. Picking up the flower, the old man asked, “Son! Do you come here every day Have you ever seen the flower ”
