See the World’s Greatest Engineering Marvels
Throughout human history, brilliant minds and hardworking hands have created countless
engineering wonders that stand the test of time. Below are three of the most famous engineering
marvels.
MACHU PICCHU
Situated between two peaks and often hidden in clouds, it is almost invisible from below. A site of
just 20 square kilometres, Machu Picchu was built in 1460 by the Incan ruler Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui
as a royal place. About 1,000 people lived in the area and they were self-sufficient, surrounded by
agricultural terraces (梯田) and watered by springs.
THE COLOSSEUM
Rome’s Colosseum was built in AD 72 on the site of a lake. Here deadly combats (格斗) and wild
animal fights were staged free of charge for public viewing. The Colosseum is practical in design, with
80 arched entrances to allow easy access for about 55,000 viewers. And it is also a building of great
classical beauty.
THE GREAT PYRAMID
Pharaoh Khufu’s pyramid, commonly called the Great Pyramid of Giza, was built using only
simple tools but with great accuracy. The pyramid contains over two million stone blocks weighing on
average 2.5 tonnes with some weighing up to 15 tonnes. Although the construction methods and the
purpose of some of its rooms are unknown, the architectural achievement is clear.
21. What was Machu Picchu used as when it was built
A. Public meeting place. B. A market for shopping.
C. An agricultural land. D. A royal place for the Incan ruler.
22. Why was the Colosseum designed with 80 arched entrances
A. To hold wild animal fights. B. To stage deadly combats.
C. To let viewers enter easily. D. To show its classical beauty.
23. What can we learn about the Great Pyramid of Giza
A. It was built with advanced tools.
B. Each stone block weighs 2.5 tonnes.
C. People know all about its construction methods.
D. The purpose of some rooms has not been discovered yet.

Sometimes, the most meaningful connections are found in simple places — a kitchen, a family
dining table, or a heartfelt book. At this year’s Shanghai Book Fair in August, a book titled From
Grandma’s Kitchen to the World’s Table captured this idea.
Written by Xu Li, the wife of the current Greek ambassador to China, Evgenios Kalpyris, the book
brings together recipes, memories, and traditions from China and Greece. With a cross-cultural view,
Xu celebrates the warmth of family life and the beauty of culinary (烹饪的) exchange. She shows that
cooking is never only about taste — it’s also about culture and emotion. She recalls preparing a Greek
New Year cake and Chinese dumplings with her children, the latter involving a hidden coin to bring
luck. These rituals, she suggests, show how Chinese and Greek cultures meet naturally in family life.
Vangelis Giannakaros, the founder of the Greek-themed restaurant Argo and a longtime friend of
Xu, says the book reminded him of the customs and traditions from his childhood. He admires Xu’s

journey of learning from her mother-in-law, mastering Greek dishes and even creating new dishes. He
described her work with the Greek word “meraki”, which means doing something with soul and love.
The book has received warm praise. Xu’s husband, Ambassador Kalpyris, noted that this book
carries the memories of his family, and many of the recipes in it are treasures passed down through
generations, which opens a delightful path for Sino-Greek cultural exchange. A publisher, Yang
Guangjie, said that the book shows how food carries history and culture, and how sharing family
traditions can help different civilizations learn from each other, creating a “harmony in diversity”.
24. What is the main purpose of Xu Li’s book
A. To teach people how to cook Greek food.
B. To introduce the Shanghai Book Fair to readers.
C. To connect cultures through food, family and traditions.
D. To share the love story between Xu Li and her husband.
25. What does the underlined word “rituals” probably mean
A. Traditions. B. Recipes. C. Tasks. D. Spirits.
26. Which of the following actions best illustrates the spirit of “meraki”
A. A student hurriedly finishing his homework right before class.
B. A gardener passionately shaping a garden with great care.
C. A factory worker performing the same task every day.
D. A person strictly following a recipe to make a meal.
27. How is the text mainly organized
A. By telling Xu’s story in time order.
B. By introducing a book’s ideas and impact.
C. By comparing Chinese and Greek food in detail.
D. By arguing why food is the most important part of culture.

Fifty years ago, the Clean Air Act in the U.S. followed the science and became a model for the
world. Longtime residents of Los Angeles remember the days when the mountains around the city were
hardly visible. But today, they stand out as a beautiful part of the city’s scenery.
It’s not just a change in Southern California. Thanks to the Clean Air Act of 1970, air across the
United States has become 77 percent cleaner — even as the population, the economy and the number of
cars on the road have grown. That improvement has lengthened millions of lives, saved trillions of
dollars, and made the country a global air pollution success story.
The landmark law was a bipartisan (涉及两党的) achievement, winning unanimous (全体一致的)
Senate approval and passing the House of Representatives with just one “no” vote. Its success comes
from its focus on scientific evidence, accountability and health-based goals. “The Clean Air Act
remains the most powerful public health law enacted in the 20th century in the United States,” said
Paul Billings of the American Lung Association.
One of the Act’s requirements was for carmakers to reduce tailpipe pollution by 90 percent.
Today’s cars are 99 percent cleaner than those made before 1970. And all these came at a low cost.
Researchers found that the law’s overall benefits are more than 40 times as great as its cost. That
success shows that we can solve difficult problems like pollution when our leaders listen to science.
That success is a reminder of how capable we are of cleaning up pollution, and of solving problems that
seem intractable (难对付或难处理的 ), when our political leaders are prepared to act on scientific
evidence.
But it’s still a work in progress, said Mustafa Santiago Ali, a vice president of the National
Wildlife Federation: “I hope we’ll come to a point in our history, sometime soon, where not only do we
understand the value of the Act, but we’re willing to do the hard work of improving it.”

It is probably no surprise to you that stress is a major driver of illness. We urgently need simple
and objective ways to study and measure it. The temperature of someone’s nose — most notably, on the
tip — might be about to give us the answers we need.
Thermal (热的 ) cameras, usually used to show heat loss in buildings, are proving invaluable in
medicine for tracking abnormal changes in body temperature related to conditions including infection
and even cancer. Researchers are now also using thermal cameras to read people’s stress levels by
mapping their temperature changes in their face.
Blood is constantly moving around our bodies through the widening and narrowing of vessels (血
管) to control its flow. But blood flow gets redirected when we are stressed. The nervous system pushes
blood towards our eyes and ears, resulting in less blood around the nose. This decrease in blood is
spotted by a thermal camera as a drop in temperature. This effect has been named the “nasal dip”, and it
is not unique to humans. It has been reported not only in adults and children, but also in some animals.
Used in combination with existing measures, thermal imaging could be a game changer for stress
research. With no need for labs or machines, it can provide a way to continuously monitor without any
physical contact with the person under evaluation.
In the very near future, we could check the temperature of our nose as a kind of biofeedback to
help us understand and adjust our stress states. We could track stress in babies before they learn to
speak, and in patients who struggle to communicate. We could detect harmful levels of stress in high
pressure environments like emergency rooms, trading floors or even zoos.
32. What was thermal cameras commonly used for
A. Reading people’s stress levels.
B. Identifying heat escape in buildings.
C. Monitoring blood flow in the human body.
D. Tracking abnormal body temperature changes.
【高一分科诊断 英语试卷 第 5 页 (共 8 页)】
33. What happens to the nose when people are stressed
A. Its temperature rises. B. It changes shape slightly.
C. Blood flow to it decreases. D. It becomes more sensitive.
34. Why could thermal imaging be a game changer for stress research
A. It can spot infections and cancers.
B. It offers accurate results with special machines.
C. It can provide constant and non-contact monitoring.
D. It can cure stress and anxiety by providing biofeedback.
35. What can be a suitable title
A. Stress: AMajor Cause of Illnesses
B. Thermal Cameras: From Building to Medicine
C. The Nasal Dip Phenomenon in Humans and Animals
D. The Nose Tip Temperature: A NewWay to Measure Stress

Lily loved painting more than anything else. Since she was a little girl, she had spent every free
moment with a brush in her hand. Her bedroom walls were covered with her paintings — beautiful
landscapes, cute animals, and colorful flowers. However, Lily was very shy. She never showed her
paintings to anyone except her parents, because she was afraid of being criticized.
One day, Lily’s school announced that there would be an art competition. The winner would have
their painting displayed in the city’s art museum. Lily’s parents encouraged her to participate, but she
hesitated. “What if my painting is not good enough ” she asked. “No one will laugh at you,” her
mother said. “The most important thing is to try.”
After thinking for a long time, Lily decided to give it a try. She spent weeks working on her
painting. She painted a beautiful sunset over the lake near her home. She put all her heart and soul into
it. When the day of the competition came, Lily took her painting to school and submitted it. She was so
nervous that she could barely sleep that night.
