Music is the language of human beings. Most people enjoy listening to music in their daily life. But if you ask your classmates what kind of music they like best, you may get many different answers. Why do different people have different musical preferences And what do these differences say about those people
Researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK tried to answer the questions. They surveyed 350,000 people from 50 different countries. Then, they discovered some connections between musical preferences and people’s personalities.
For example, generally speaking, outgoing people prefer rhythmic (有节奏的) music and danceable music. People who enjoy country music are shown to be more serious about their work. And, one of the findings is quite interesting. The researchers predicted that people who were under too much stress should like either sad music to express their feelings or rhythmic music to improve their moods (心情). But it turned out that these people liked neither. In fact, they prefer loud and powerful (强有力的) music. Perhaps it helps cut down on their stress.
The researchers also found that climates (气候) might influence people’s musical preferences and personalities. People in warmer climates prefer danceable music. They are also more outgoing. This may be a result of longer daylight hours. They encourage people to go outdoors to socialize or to dance.
Of course, nothing is certain. We may not simply group people according to their musical tastes. It is sometimes not difficult for us to find that people from different cultures are more similar than we think. “People may be divided by geography, language and culture,” said Dr. David Greenberg, the leading researcher. “But if an outgoing person in one part of the world likes the same music as outgoing people elsewhere, then we can say that music is really like a good bridge.”

In the ice cap area near China’s Zhongshan Station in Antarctica (南极洲), a six-legged robotic dog is working. It is carrying a box while walking across snow and ice. How could it stand such low temperatures
The developers designed (设计) a special type of shoes for the robotic dog. “The material can stand temperatures as low as -40℃. So it can get used to the environments of Antarctica. Also, when the robot walks on ice, these shoes also help cut down the pressure on the ice, so it causes little damage (破坏) to the ice surface,” said Mao Shijie, the head of the six-legged robotic team.
The robotic dog also has a special battery (电池). This lets it work for two hours even in the cold Antarctic temperatures. But this isn’t enough. So, the scientific team looks for ways to make its battery life longer. “For scientific research, we usually need it to work for more than four hours. No matter how cold it is, we often do ice-surface research. In such cases, we add two more batteries on top of the robotic dog to make sure it can keep working for 4-6 hours,” Mao added.
According to CCTV, the six-legged robotic dog has now successfully completed tests such as carrying heavy things on the ice surfaces of Antarctica. It can carry things weighing from 70 to 100 kilograms. “This robotic dog has met all our hopes with its good performance in the cold Antarctic environment,” said a member of the research team. “It will take the difficult and risky jobs that we used to do. With its help, our Antarctic research will move much faster.”
81. Why could the robotic dog stand low temperatures in Antarctica
82. What is the second advantage (优势) of the robotic dog’s shoes
83. What problem does the robotic dog’s battery have
84. What do the research team think of the robotic dog’s future
85. How do you like the robotic dog’s developers
