Music therapy is increasingly recognized for its positive impact on individuals with dementia (痴呆), helping to build connections and sustain cognitive(认知的) function. A special choir in Sarasota, Florida, called Where Are My Keys, demonstrates how music can provide support for people experiencing memory loss.
The choir features both individuals with dementia and professional singers from Key Chorale. Under the direction of Joseph Caulkins whose family members have battled Alzheimer’ s disease, the choir practices weekly and performs twice a month. The performance includes familiar songs with themes that evoke personal memories, such as western classics. These sessions are not only relaxing but also fun, with Caulkins engaging the participants through humor and lighthearted comments.
Music has a unique ability to arouse memories, even in those with severe cognitive decline. Bob and Amy, the participants in the choir, have been singing together for decades. Bob, who has mild cognitive impairment, can still remember the lyrics to many songs, even when other memories fade. His wife, Amy, notes that while she has to rely on sheet music, Bob rarely needs to look at the words, illustrating the power of music to preserve long-term memory.
Lynne Lash, a professional singer and former music therapist (治疗专家), pairs with individuals who may not sing but enjoy engaging with music through instruments. She stresses that music can spark memories and conversations, helping the participants connect with their past and share meaningful moments.
Research supports the therapeutic benefits of music for those with dementia, including the improvement of brain function, the enhancement of social interaction, and the potential to learn new skills. Concetta Tomaino, who has studied music’s effect on the ageing brain for decades, emphasizes that personalized music can help individuals with dementia keep their cognitive abilities and enjoy meaningful interactions. While there is no cure for dementia, music therapy offers a valuable way to improve the quality of life of different people and bring joy to those affected by memory loss.
8. What does Where Are My Keys offer to the participants
A Social and mental support.
B. Financial and technical assistance.
C. Rare songs and uncommon themes.
D. Professional direction and serious comments.
9. What does music mean to Bob
A. It cures his cognitive decline.
B. It helps maintain his memory.
C It improves his ability to write lyrics.
D. It gives him the power to learn new songs.
10. What does Lynne Lash emphasize about music therapy
A. Its origin. B. Its process. C. Its functions. D. Its limitations.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the effect of personalized music on dementia
A. Indifferent. B. Doubtful. C. Cautious. D. Positive.

A special patient let out cries and pulled back his lips, but he couldn’t talk to his doctor. The patient was a goat. How can his caretakers know if these behaviors are temporary moods or signals of genuine pain
Recognizing animal pain is extremely difficult. To do so, humans must rely on subtle body language or behavioral changes. But a new AI model automates this process by identifying pain in goats through detecting changes in their appearance. The model achieved 90% accuracy and offers a promising way to automatically monitor livestock (牲畜) health.
Traditionally, detecting animal pain involves analyzing photos or videos by hand for specific cues — a raised lip with sharp breaths — and creating pain scales for individual species. But as humans, we interpret animals’ pain through “a biased lens”. When detection is automated, the AI mode just picks up the patterns.
Vet Chiavaccini and her team videotaped 40 goats of various breeds and ages with different medical conditions, generating over 5,000 fixed frames. Using a behavioral pain scale, clinical history, and physical exams, they classified each goat as in pain or not. The team trained an algorithm (算法) on different image groupings while testing that training. The most balanced model was trained on four fifths of the frames, refined with the remaining fifth, and tested on videos of two additional goats. Repeating this process five times produced 90% accuracy. “Such training builds 30 years of clinical experience in 30 minutes,” Chiavaccini says.
Similar AI tools exist for cats, which have better-established expression-based pain scales, but the only goat scale had been validated (验证) only in young males undergoing a certain operation. Chiavaccini was inspired by the lack of goat pain scales and a graduate student’s enthusiasm. AI-powered tools built with similar methods could help vets make quicker diagnoses or alert farmers to early livestock suffering. This study shows the potential or broader adoption of AI in animal care and highlights the need for further exploration across diverse species, according to Marwa, who specializes in behavioral AI of humans and animals.
12. How does the new AI model work in identifying the pain of livestock
A. By learning from human caretakers.
B. By detecting their cries’ frequencies.
C. By analyzing their facial expressions.
D. By relying on humans’ observation ability.
13. What does the underlined phrase “a biased lens” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. A fair standard. B. A flexible pattern.
C. A computer assessment. D. A subjective judgement.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly show about the AI pain detection model
A. Its data sources and classification.
B. Its development process and outcome.
C. Its training steps and future applications.
D. Its working principle and major disadvantages.
15. What will the study most likely focus on next
A. Economic impacts of AI in farming.
B. Moral concerns of AI in animal care.
C. Challenges in detecting humans’ pain.
D. Expanding AI applications to other species.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I often passed an ignored community garden after school. One afternoon, I discovered an abandoned rose bush near the garbage pile, its stems broken and leaves drooping (垂落). It looked as defeated as I felt after my quarrel with Chloe, my former best friend. Weeks of silence felt heavy and long. I felt a sense of sympathy — maybe it was because my own name is Rose. So I carefully dug it up. I wrapped its small roots in my shirt and carried it home — a determined rescue mission for this wounded piece of nature.
Back home, my dad, a landscaper with a deep love for growing flowers, saw my new plant. He examined the weak plant, and then smiled, “Every living thing deserves a second chance, Rose. Let’s see what we can do together.” Instead of taking over, he became my guide. He showed me how to remove the dead wood and replant it in our garden using his own special nutrient-rich soil. My mom was skeptical, seeing only thorns (刺) where I saw hope. But Dad believed in our project. He told me that plants could feel our care and intention. So, every day after school, I would sit with the rose, sharing my thoughts and regrets, secretly pouring out all the words I wished I could say to Chloe.
Months of patient care brought the rose a slow but good transformation. The plant pushed out lively green leaves, and later, a single perfect bud (花蕾) formed. This small achievement gave me unexpected courage. I finally texted a picture of the bud to Chloe. Her immediate excited reply filled me with hope. When she visited my home, our old ease returned instantly as we admired the promising bud together. Seeing the scene of our harmonious interaction, Dad smiled and presented us with a packet of rose seeds. “This is for both of you,” he said. “Some bonds, like roses, grow strongest when nurtured together.” Mom smiled too, handing us drinks.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

Dear Brian,
I’m glad you’re interested in Chinese culture. My favorite festival is the Spring Festival, which usually falls in late January or early February. As China’s most important festival, it’s a time for family reunions, big dinners, and fun activities like dragon dances.
Last Spring Festival left me a memorable experience. We made dumplings together, and I found a hidden coin in one — symbolizing good luck! At night, we watched wonderful fireworks. The festive atmosphere was amazing.
I hope you can come to China to experience the Spring Festival’s joy yourself!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】参考范文:
Soon, I prepared a pot and planted the rose seeds with Chloe. Tending to them became our daily routine. That was a peaceful time when we rebuilt our friendship. We talked about everything we had missed, our laughter returning as naturally as the green shoots breaking through the soil. Meanwhile, the rose bud swelled daily, its deep red color intensifying, a parallel to our healing friendship. Mom, watching this dual blossoming, would leave small treats for us — cold lemonade and fresh cookies — her quiet but heartfelt blessing on our renewed connection.
The roses eventually flowered, which surprised Chloe and me. But the bigger surprise came weeks later when a butterfly graced our rose plants. My dad joined us as we watched the magnificent creature. “You see,” he said softly, “by saving one plant, you’ve healed a friendship and given life a home. This is nature’s beautiful way of connecting us all.” At that moment, I understood the profound lesson: Our small acts of care had positive effects that extended far beyond our garden, weaving us into life’s magnificent, interconnected web.
