At around 3, 000 meters above sea level in the Xiangguqing area of Yunnan Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve, even young hikers often struggle with the altitude. Yet Yu Jianhua, now in his seventies, still climbs regularly. Once the best hunter in Tacheng Town, he became a forest ranger (护林员) at 45, devoting his life to protecting the endangered Yunnan golden hair monkey. His son, Yu Zhonghua, later joined him, and together they have safeguarded the species for over 30 years.
Decades ago, the monkeys were rarely seen. Established in 1983, the reserve aimed to save the species. Yu Jianhua’s first task was locating the monkeys. “I started searching in April 1995, but it wasn’t until March 1996 that I finally spotted them about 1 kilometer away,” he said. While searching, he took traps apart and rescued wildlife, gradually earning the monkeys’ trust. By 2005, he could approach them within 10 meters. He studied their behavior, from food to shelter choices, to inform conservation efforts.
Since 2008, several monkey families have settled in the Xiangguqing area, enabling research and education. Unlike his father, Yu Zhonghua expanded the work to include population monitoring, community management, and the training of 16 rangers. Their long-term observations have significantly advanced scientific conservation. Over the past decade, nearly 150 newborns have been added to the Xiangguqing population, with each family group maintaining 50 — 70 individuals. Nationally, the species has grown from 1, 000 — 1, 500 in 1996 to nearly 4, 000 today.
This summer, the reserve attracted educational groups, with rangers sharing their conservation efforts. While both father and son are devoted to their work, they hope to raise awareness about the endangered monkeys and inspire others to continue their mission. “Perhaps one day I won’t be able to climb these mountains anymore,” Yu Jianhua said. “I just hope more people will carry on the work.”
4. Why are young hikers mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To highlight Yu Jianhua’ devotion at an old age.
B. To explain why the reserve needs more rangers.
C. To show Xiangguqing is popular with young people.
D. To warn readers of the high-altitude risk in Baima Snow Mountain.
5. What was Yu Jianhua’s first task after becoming a ranger
A. Rescuing trapped wildlife in the reserve. B. Locating the Yunnan golden hair monkeys.
C. Studying the behavior of the monkey groups. D. Training new rangers for community management.
6. What did Yu Zhonghua do for monkey conservation
A. He set up the reserve in 1983.
B. He earned monkeys’ trust by taking apart traps.
C. He increased the national population to 4, 000 alone.
D. He added population monitoring and ranger training.
7. What’s the best title for the passage
A. The History of Yunnan Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve
B. The Growth of Yunnan Golden Hair Monkeys Nationwide
C. The Friendship Between Humans and Endangered Monkeys
D. The Two Generations’ Devotion to Protecting Endangered Monkeys
C
The protein craze doesn’t seem to be going away. Social media is full of people urging you to eat more protein. Food companies have also started highlighting the protein content on food packages to promote sales. But is all the extra protein doing us any good and can we have too much protein
Eating enough protein is important. It helps build muscle, supports immune functions, and provides energy. Australia’s healthy eating guidelines recommend 15% — 25% of daily energy from protein, with adults advised to consume at least 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. Research shows that consuming more than the recommended amount offers no additional benefits. In fact, having too much protein can cause problems.
If protein is consumed in excess, it can be converted into energy or fat. For some, too much protein can be risky. People with chronic kidney disease (慢性肾病) need to monitor their protein consumption to avoid kidney damage. There is also a condition called protein poisoning, which occurs when you eat too much protein without getting enough fats, carbohydrates (碳水化合物) and other nutrients.
The choice of protein can relate to more than just meeting nutritional needs. Plant-based proteins (e.g. beans, whole grains) and animal-based proteins (e.g. eggs, dairy, meat, fish) are both options. However, high animal protein consumption is linked to increased risks of premature death (especially from cancer) and type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, people consuming more plant sources of protein are associated with: a lower risk of dying from cancer; a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes; and improved blood cholesterol (胆固醇) levels.
Overall, where you get protein from — and having a balance between animal and plant sources — is more important than simply trying to add more protein to your diet. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates all work together to keep your body healthy and the engine running smoothly.
8. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. Researchers agree that less protein intake is reasonable.
B. No less than 56 grams of protein is a proper intake for adults of 70 kg.
C. More protein than recommended can still bring hidden benefits.
D. Food firms overstate the value of extra protein to mislead people.
9. What does the underlined word “converted” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Transformed. B. Divided. C. Broken. D. Thrown.
10. What is the main argument in paragraph 4
A. The risks of plant-based proteins are relatively small.
B. People should avoid animal-based proteins to prevent diseases.
C. The source of protein is a critical factor affecting its health risks.
D. Plant-based proteins are the recommended source for reducing health risks.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the “protein craze”
A. Fully supportive. B. Strongly opposed.
C. Completely neutral. D. Cautiously critical.
D
Scientists from Nanjing University in China have developed a groundbreaking transparent (透明的) coating that can transform ordinary windows into solar panels while maintaining their transparency.
This innovation, known as a “colorless and unidirectional diffractive-type solar concentrator” (CUSC) , works by directing some sunlight to photovoltaic (光伏的) cells mounted on the edges of the window, transforming it into electricity, while allowing most light to pass through.
The CUSC coating is made from cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) , which enable the coating to cover the full light spectrum (光谱) but trap only one kind of light for energy transformation — key to preserving the window’s function. “The CUSC design is a step forward in integrating solar technology into the built environment,” says the engineer, Hu Wei. “It represents a practical strategy for carbon reduction and energy self-sufficiency.”
In tests, the coating demonstrated impressive performance: It allows 64.2% of visible light to pass through while maintaining 91.3% color accuracy. Under green laser light, it captured 38.1% of available energy, and in realistic conditions with the full light spectrum, the overall efficiency was 18.1%.
The team has already created a 1-inch (1 inch=2.54 cm) test piece using the coating, which collects enough energy to power a small fan. Scale that up to a full-size window, and a large amount of electricity could potentially be generated. As the coating can be applied to normal windows without too many changes, the team is hopeful that this can be commercialized — though there’s still a lot of work to do before that happens.
The researchers say more can be done to improve the stability and the production of the coating, and the energy transforming efficiency needs to be improved too — the total amount of incoming solar energy that actually makes it into usable electricity. Right now, that figure stands at a relatively low 3.7 percent. “To scale up production, several improvements in materials and procedures need to be considered,” write the researchers in their published paper.
12. What is the main function of the CUSC coating
A. It transforms windows into standard solar panels.
B. It absorbs sunlight to produce and store electricity.
C. It directs sunlight to photovoltaic cells for electricity.
D. It develops a transparent coating to improve energy storage.
13. What does the CUSC design represent according to Hu Wei
A. A solution to replacing traditional power sources. B. A means of realizing self-sufficiency in energy.
C. A method to integrate solar energy into the wall. D. A focus on reducing the cost of carbon emissions.
14. What can be inferred about the coating from the test results
A. It maintains high transparency and color accuracy.
B. It achieves the highest efficiency with green laser light.
C. It performs better in realistic conditions than under laser light.
D. Its color performance is superior to its energy capture capability.
15. What is the main challenge in commercializing the CUSC coating
A. Its stability is far from perfect. B. It cannot be applied to normal windows.
C. Its test piece is too small for practical use. D. Its overall energy transforming efficiency is low.

Eight years ago, Sun Jia, born and raised in Shanghai, married Miguel, a Brazilian. Moving with him to South America, she settled in Campinas, whose name means “green fields” in Portuguese (葡萄牙语) , northwest of Sāo Paulo. “The weather is perfect and there is light traffic, ” Sun Jia recalled. In autumn, when the sky turned deep blue and leaves gold and red, she still sat in parks, missing Shanghai food and her parents.
To fit in faster, Sun Jia hunted online for jobs. Armed with a master’s degree and rich experience, she polished her résumé (简历) and sent out dozens, only to be met with silence. One tech company interview failed because of her poor Portuguese. As three anxious months passed, she began to doubt herself. Miguel, noticing the change, rewrote her résumé line by line and practiced the language with her every night, never letting her give up.
A turning point arrived at last; an e-mail saying she had passed two tests and was invited to the final talk. Excited yet nervous, she practiced at home with Miguel, whose funny faces sent her into laughter that swept the fear away. The next morning, she won an offer from a well-known children’s English center.
After four months, Sun Jia, aware of her responsibility, tailored lessons for each child. Adopting lively games and exaggerated gestures, she aimed for three laughter bursts per class, believing that laughter equaled success. Checking exercises after class, she soon won parents’ delight with kids’ progress. Rediscovering her outgoing self amid laughter, she embraced teaching wholeheartedly.
Amazed by her expertise in Chinese art and music, Mr. Carlos Wizard Martins, a local entrepreneur and parent of her student, urgently sought a Mandarin tutor to explore the Chinese market. Luckily, Sun Jia secured the post and she helped him a lot. Months later, Shanghai saw the opening of his first branch, urging her to establish a Chinese center in Campinas. So important was his advice that it marked another turning point in her new life.

Less Pressure, a Better Life
As high school seniors, we face pressure from various sources. Primarily, it comes from heavy academic workloads, frequent exams, and high expectations from parents and teachers.
To ease these pressures, here are some effective methods. First, talk to friends or family — sharing your feelings can lighten your emotional burden. Second, engage in activities you enjoy, such as listening to music, exercising, or spending time in nature. Third, manage your time wisely by making a practical study plan, which can reduce last-minute stress.
Remember, pressure is normal, but we can learn to handle it positively!

Guided by Martin’s advice Sun Jia decided to open her own Chinese Language Center. She ran home, holding the note tightly. “I want to start a Chinese Language Center,” she told Miguel, her voice shaking. “We’ll teach Chinese writing, traditional opera, and paper-cutting to let Brazilians feel China’s warmth.” Miguel looked at her worriedly but said firmly, “If job-hunting didn’t hold you back before, this won’t either. We’ll face this together!” There was so much to do — finding a location, getting permits — but the couple worked hard, tired but excited. Finally, the JiaYan Chinese Language Center opened.
Six months later, more cultural events were held in her center every week. On Saturdays, Brazilian families gathered for “China Day” to try calligraphy. Kids carefully held brushes to write the character “Fu”, while their parents admired the elegant strokes of “Yong”. Monthly workshops taught participants how to create golden “Spring” paper-cuttings for window decorations or Chinese knots. Even the local government encouraged her to design a “China-Brazil Friendship Path”, where paper-cuttings hung beside the old photos of the city. At the path’s opening, children waved handmade lanterns and eagerly took photos with her. Standing there, she understood: Cultural connections truly bridge distances.
