Characters: “I”—Storyteller Bertie—storyteller’s husband The White Prince—a lion
We never had children of our own—just The White Prince—and I can tell you, he was enough of a family for anyone. He walked freely in the park just as we had planned he would, and ran after the deer and the rabbits whenever he felt like it; but he never did learn how to kill for himself. You can't teach old lions new tricks. He lived on deer mostly, and slept on a sofa in our living room-I wouldn't have him inside our bedroom, no matter how often Bertie asked. You know, I have to draw the line somewhere.
Bertie's leg was never cured. When it was bad, he often needed a stick, or me, or the lion to lean on. It pained him a lot, especially on cold and wet days, and he never slept well. On Sundays the three of us would walk around the park together, and Bertie would sit on the top of Wood Hill with his arm around the lion's neck and I would fly kites. You know, I' ve always loved kites, And the lion liked to break them into pieces.
The lion never showed any interest in running away, and even if he'd wanted to, the park wall was too high for an old lion to jump over. Wherever Bertie went, he wanted to go too. And if ever Bertie went out in the car, then he'd sit by me in the kitchen, and watch me with those great amber eyes, listening all the while for the sound of Bertie's car coming up the path to the front of the house.
The lion was getting older. And he became weak in his legs and could see very little. He spent his last days sleeping at Bertie's feet. When he died, we buried (埋葬) him at the bottom of the hill. Bertie wanted it that way so he could always see the place from the kitchen window. I suggested Bertie plant a tree in case he forgot where the lion was.“I will, but he should get more than a tree.” Bertie said.
Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even comfort him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks by himself. He seemed so sad inside himself, so distant. Try as I did, I could not reach him.
(Adapted from The Butterfly Lion)

It was dark and I was standing in front of a stranger's house in an unfamiliar street. The little bird waiting inside the house would be my first test as a volunteer wildlife rescuer (救助者).
A kind-looking man led me inside to see my very first patient. I would have to look confident, like I'd done this kind of thing many times before. I lifted the edge of the shoe box very slightly to see a bird standing on very thin legs. The bird seemed very aghast, so I decided not to catch it by hand but just move the whole shoe box into my rescue box.
I hadn't seen this species (物种) of bird before, so I searched the Internet for its information: a rufous fantail, so called because of its red-brown tail feathers that, when fully open, spread out into a neat little“fan”. I phoned the bird specialist of the rescue group. She told me this species hunts insects on the wing and keeping it longer than overnight would only do it harm.
I waited until dusk the next day, which would provide the cover of darkness, to set it free. I held the bird up as high as I could to give it a good lift-off and open the flap. The little bird flew off quickly into the darkness.
My first successful rescue was not just a second chance for the bird. Five months earlier, I received a cancer diagnosis (诊断) and I was now at the point where I wasn't planning my days around hospital visits. For me, it was making room in my life for wildlife rescue. I'd been interested in animals ever since I was a young girl but had always thought that I'd missed that boat. But I heard about a local wildlife rescue group that was looking for volunteers, and was holding a two-day intensive (强化的) course in wildlife rescue.
I had a free weekend. The only thing stopping me was a lack (缺乏) of confidence. I generally didn't put my hand up for tasks that I might fail in, especially in public. But the wildlife rescue organization was willing to take a chance on me, then I could find the courage to take on the responsibility of this role.
And one day, there was a small bird picked up by an elderly man who'd looked out of his front window after hearing bird calls. It was in a box waiting just for me.
( ) 47. What does the underlined word “aghast” mean in this story
A. quiet B. bored C. excited D. scared
( ) 48. What can we infer from the passage
A. The rescue was a change in direction for the writer.
B. The rescue mainly helps these birds to search for food.
C The writer would like to be a rescuer when she was young.
D. The writer felt hopeless after receiving the cancer diagnosis.
( ) 49. Which can be the best title of the story
A. Just for Me B. A Second Chance C. A Kind Girl D. A Successful Rescue

The end of the year is drawing near, and winter is in full activity. The season brings along with its strong winds and snow—an environment that's never comfortable to be in.
This unpleasant and even frightening part of winter can be often seen in literature. In Shakespeare's King Lear (1606), the king has given away his kingdom and been driven out by his two ungrateful daughters. He is out in the winter cold, suffering things that are usually saved for the poorest and most unlucky human beings.
The winter is bad enough for Lear, but being driven out by his family is worse. A song from another Shakespeare's play, As You Like I (1599), is fitting for this poor old man's situation:" blow, blow, thou winter wind/ thou art not so unkind / As man's ingratitude (忘恩负义)”. Here, winter is used to bring out the ugliness of inhumanity (无人性). There aren't many things that are worse than winter, according to Shakespeare.
Once winter became less of a danger to human beings, it became more positive in literary works. Since Charles Dickens, the representation of the season in literature often has something to do with happy Christmas celebrations.
The cold of the winter weather provides a contrast (对比) to the fun going on indoors.
Dickens’A Christmas Carol (1843) was the start of this, but Christmas is still a common, cheery element(元素) in stories that feature winter scenes today. Consider the joy felt by Harry Potter and his friends in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1997) as they sit down for their festive meal:
“Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner. A hundred fat, roast turkeys;mountains of roast and boiled potatoes; platters of chipolatas; tureens of buttered peas, silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce”.
It is almost as much a pleasure to read about the meal as it might have been to eat it.
Although winter still isn't the most cheerful season in novels and poems, it's safe to say that writers have surely “warmed up” since Shakespeare's days.

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (增材制造), has been in use since 1986. Before that, 3D printing wasn't so important. Now, however, industries have begun using additive manufacturing.
3D printing in fashion
More and more people have begun using 3D printing in industries such as food and fashion. However, there has not been an active market for 3D-printed shoes for years. The possibilities with shoes may be endless.
There are risks in the fashion and shoe industries when considering a long-term move to 3D printing. This would mean a change of design and production methods with a huge cost of buying new machines and materials. It is a risk without certain profit (收益), but the future of 3D-printed shoes is unbelievable because these shoes are recyclable (可回收的). It is unusual and it is a business risk. But it could be part of saving the planet from the thousands of shoes that end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) every year.
3D printing in food
Even more excellent is 3D-printed food. Beginning with a paste (糊状物) and then the printer produces shapes and designs from a computer. This process is not easy, but restaurants and food companies are still trying out the technology.
At Columbia University, researchers have begun using lasers (激光) to cook the food as it prints, opening up the world of cooking. Once, they produced a piece of cheesecake in 30 minutes. While the researchers believe the technology will continue to grow and gain interest, it is currently much too expensive for people to use regularly.
68. How was 3D printing before 1986
69. What industries have used 3D printing according to the passage
70. Why can 3D-printed shoes save the planet
71. How did the researchers open up the world of cooking
72. What do you think of the future of 3D printing
