二、阅读理解
People celebrate World Environment Day (WED) in many different ways all over the world: planting trees, cleaning up local beaches, organizing meetings, joining online activities. Each year the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) chooses a particular issue to focus on. One year it might be forests and another year it might be wildlife. And each year there is a new host: a city which is a center point for all the celebrations. How it first started
The United Nations (UN) named 5 June as World Environment Day at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. The idea was to draw attention to the many problems that are facing our environment. The first World Environment Day
The first WED was celebrated in 1973 in Switzerland. The slogan for that first year was “Only One Earth”. The hosts
Since 1973 the WED has been hosted in more than 20 different countries around the world, from Cuba to the Republic of Korea, from Belgium to Brazil. Some countries have hosted the main celebrations two or more times, including Bangladesh, Canada and China. But that doesn’t mean that all the celebrations take place in the host country. The issues
Each year the celebrations focus on a particular problem. Over the last 10 years, key issues have included wildlife, forests and plastic waste, among other things. Each issue has a slogan. Past slogans include “Think. Eat. Save”, which asked people to think about the issue of food waste, and “Raise your voice, not sea level”, to focus on the effect that global warming is having on small island nations around the world. What you can do
You can visit the official website to find out what this year’s slogan is. You can search for the slogan online to find organizations and events in your area or online. You can share information about the cause and the events on social media or form a local action group of your own and organize an event in your community. Whatever you do, you won’t be alone. Millions of people around the world will be joining the celebrations and fighting for a better future for our planet.
21.What can we learn about the host of World Environment Day from the passage
A.The same city can host WED many times.
B.Only 20 countries have hosted WED since 1973.
C.The host city plays a central role in WED celebrations.
D.All WED celebrations must be held in the host country.
22.Why did the UN set the slogan “Raise your voice, not sea level” for WED
A.To remind people to protect forests.
B.To call on people to cut down food waste.
C.To encourage people to be kind to wildlife.
D.To highlight global warming’s impact on small island nations.
23.Where is this passage most likely taken from
A.A best-selling novel. B.A science fiction.
C.A fashion newspaper. D.An environmental magazine.
Once considered crazy by fellow villagers, Indonesian eco-warrior Sadiman has turned barren (贫瘠的) hills green after 25 years of effort, making water resources available in the drought-prone mountainous region where he lives.
Lovingly addressed as “grandpa”, the 72-year-old has worked continuously to plant trees in the hills of central Java after fires intended to clear the land for farming nearly dried up its rivers and lakes.
“I thought to myself, if I don’t plant trees, this area would become dry,” said Sadiman, an average old man like many Indonesians, “And in my experience, banyan trees (榕树) and ficus trees (无花果树) can store a lot of water. ”
Thanks to his efforts, springs have formed where once there was barren and dry land, with their water piped to homes and used to irrigate (灌溉) farms. The long and widespread roots of at least 11,000 banyan and ficus trees, Sadiman has planted over 617 acres help to hold groundwater and prevent land erosion (侵蚀).
Yet at the beginning, few village residents appreciated his work.
“People blamed me for bringing banyan tree seeds to the village because they felt uneasy as they believed there were spirits in these trees,” Sadiman added.
“Some even thought he was a bad man because he traded the goats he raised for young trees,” said one villager, Warto. “In the past, people thought he was crazy, but look at the result now — Lack of rain in the area where he planted trees had once limited farmers to a single harvest a year, but now, the plentiful water sources ensure two or three.”
Sadiman also funds his work through a nursery of plants such as cloves and Jackfruit, that he can sell or trade. “I hope people here can have wealthy lives and live happily. And don’t burn the forest over and over again,” Sadiman added, with a twinkle in his eye.
24.Why did Sadiman plant banyan and ficus trees over the mountain
A.To prevent land erosion. B.To drive away wild animals.
C.To pump water for irrigation. D.To clear the land for farming.
25.What does the underlined word “uneasy” in the 6th paragraph mean
A.Excited. B.Nervous. C.Grateful. D.Confused.
26.How did Sadiman fund his tree-planting work
A.He used the income from his farm. B.He asked villagers for financial help.
C.He sold or traded plants from his nursery. D.He got donations from environmental groups.
27.What can we infer about the impact of Sadiman’s work
A.It made him become a wealthy man.
B.It caused conflicts between him and the villagers.
C.It helped increase the local farmers’ harvest times.
D.It made the local rivers and lakes completely dry up.
In a society that values productivity, it is rare that people just sit back and do nothing. However, nowadays many youngsters are turning to doing absolutely nothing all day in a trend known as “bed rotting”.
“Bed rotting refers to doing nothing aside from lying in bed and relaxing,” says Kristin Gill, a psychiatrist. “It’s a term that young people have coined to describe taking a step back from their busy lives and giving themselves time to recharge their batteries.”
“It’s normal and healthy for people to take time to rest and unplug from the world around them,” Doctor Gill says. “This can actually help people recharge their social battery and physically rest their bodies,so they are better suited to do with what lies ahead.”
Another benefit of “bed rotting” includes taking a step back from hustle culture (奋斗文化) and simply being more present. “Just saying ‘I’m going to do nothing today’ or ‘I’m going to take a rest today’ can be very empowering to people in the society where they feel guilty for resting and taking breaks.” Dr. Gill says.
However, too much “bed rotting” can hurt more than it helps.
“Staying in bed for long periods of time can be a form of avoidance and potentially lead to isolation,” says Justin Puder, a psychologist. “Periods of aloneness can help us reset, but long periods of isolation are linked to depression. Additionally, staying in our comfort zone for days on end can increase our anxiety when we have to leave for work, school or social meetups.”
Puder adds it’s also important to vary your environment and get out of your house every day, even if only for an hour or two.
Aside from potentially affecting your mental health, “bed rotting” may also negatively impact your sleeping. When you spend too much time in bed outside of your typical sleeping time, your brain is more likely to confuse sleep and wakefulness. This may decrease your overall sleep quality and potentially lead to insomnia (失眠).
To sum up, “bed rotting” can be beneficial if integrated into your life in a healthy and balanced way. However, you still want to find other healthy coping mechanisms to deal with the daily stresses, whether that’s going on a solo date to a coffee shop or taking a hike in nature.
28.What does “bed rotting” mean according to Kristin Gill
A.Remaining at home to avoid social interactions.
B.Lying in bed doing nothing but relax and recharge.
C.Staying indoors to deal with depression and anxiety.
D.Spending extra time in bed to improve sleep quality.
29.What can we infer from Dr. Gill’s words about “bed rotting”
A.It will finally replace other rest methods. B.It fits young people better than the elderly.
C.It needs at least one full day to take effect. D.It helps reduce guilt about resting in hustle culture.
30.Why does Justin Puder suggest getting out of the house daily
A.To maintain a good and stable social network.
B.To avoid long-term isolation and increased anxiety.
C.To find more effective approaches to resting ourselves.
D.To prevent the brain from mixing sleep and wakefulness.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A.Bed Rotting: Benefits and Risks to Consider B.Bed Rotting: A New Trend for Youngsters
C.Bed Rotting: A Proper Way to Rest Yourself D.Bed Rotting: Hidden Dangers to People’s Health
Scientists have created a new kind of paint that is super light and super tough. The colors in the new paint aren’t at all like those in most paints. Instead, they are more like the colors on a butterfly’s wings.
For hundreds of years, humans have been mixing different minerals, metals or chemicals together to produce different colors of paint. But nature has another way to create color, called “structural color”. Structural color comes from tiny shapes on the surfaces of things like wings, feathers or shells. Normally, we never see the shapes that create these colors because they are so tiny.
Researchers were trying to create a special mirrored surface. But they found super tiny masses of aluminum (铝) atoms on the surface. The researchers were upset at first because these tiny masses messed up the mirror. Then they realized that these tiny masses made colors when light hit them. They decided to turn this discovery into paint. All the colors in the new paint come from aluminum. There are tiny aluminum flakes and then even tinier, nanoparticles (纳米颗粒) that create the colors. The nanoparticles don’t really produce the color. They simply reflect back a single color. The size of the nanoparticles determines which color gets reflected.
Because new paint doesn’t have pigments (颜料,色素), the paint is extremely light. The paint is so light that it could reduce the amount of fuel used by planes and cars. Normally, it takes about 500 kilograms of paint to cover a Boeing 747 airplane. It would only take 1.3 kilograms of this kind of structural paint to do the same job.
In regular paint, pigments break down and fade over time. That’s not true for structural color. “Once we paint something with structural color, it should stay for centuries,” says Dr. Chanda.
What’s more, the new paint doesn’t heat up like a regular paint. That’s true even for dark colors. The new paint can keep the surface up to 16.6 degrees Celsius cooler than normal paint. Using the paint on buildings in cities could help cool cities and reduce electricity spent on air conditioning.
32.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A.The inspiration of the discovery. B.The method of the light-testing.
C.The trouble of the mirror-making. D.The problem of the aluminum masses.
33.What determines the color reflected by the new paint
A.The type of minerals mixed in. B.The size of aluminum nanoparticles.
C.The amount of aluminum flakes used. D.The temperature of the painted surface.
34.What is Doctor Chanda’s attitude towards the new structural color paint
A.Doubtful. B.Cautious. C.Positive. D.Critical.
35.What can we infer about the new paint compared with regular paint
A.It can help save electricity bills. B.It costs more money to buy and use.
C.It takes more time to dry on surfaces. D.It is harder to produce in large quantities.
Illeism: The ancient trick to help you think more wisely
As a writer specializing in psychology, I’ve come across hundreds of evidence-based tips for better thinking. 36 .
Put simply, illeism is the practice of talking about oneself in the third person, rather than the first person. 37 . Julius Caesar famously wrote “Caesar conquered Gaul” in his third person war comments, creating an air of authority.
To the modern ear, illeism can sound a little silly or arrogant (自大的). 38 . If we are trying to make a difficult decision, speaking about ourselves in the third person can help to neutralize the emotions that could lead our thinking off track, allowing us to find a wiser solution to our problem.
39 . This would cloud our thinking and prevent us from putting our issues in perspective. If I have received negative feedback from a colleague, for example, my feeling of embarrassment might lead me to become overly self-defensive. I might therefore dismiss their opinions without considering whether their advice could be helpful in the long-term.
By switching to the third person, our descriptions of the situation will start to sound as if we are talking about someone else rather than ourselves. 40 . By encouraging us to put our problems in perspective, the use of illeism may also help us to have a more balanced response to daily stresses.
A.Historically, illeism appears in literature and leadership contexts
B.Few have proven as useful to me as the ancient strategy of illeism
C.However, illeism risks sounding arrogant or impersonal if overused
D.When making personal choices, we become too immersed in our emotions
E.For English learners, recognizing illeism enhances literary analysis and cultural understanding
F.Yet recent psychological research suggests that illeism can bring some real cognitive benefits
G.This sense of objectivity would allow us to see the bigger picture, rather than getting caught up in our own feelings

A Rainy Day Rescue
The afternoon sky turned dark suddenly, and heavy rain poured down without warning. Xiao Ming, a senior three student, was riding his bike home. He pedaled hard, trying to reach home before the rain got worse, but the road soon became slippery. The raindrops hit his face like small needles, and his vision got a little unclear, so he had to slow down and focus on the road ahead.
As he passed the old alley near the school, he heard a faint whimper (受惊动物的呜咽) Curious, he stopped his bike and walked carefully into the alley. There, under a broken shelter, he saw a small, wet dog trembling. Its fur was soaked, sticking to its thin body, and it looked scared, shrinking into a ball to keep warm. Xiao Ming’s heart softened-he’d always loved animals but his parents were too busy to let him keep one.
He took off his school uniform jacket and gently wrapped it around the dog. The dog stopped whimpering and pushed his hand with its cold nose, as if seeking comfort. Xiao Ming looked at the pouring rain and then at the little dog. The shelter above them was leaking, and the rain was starting to wet his shirt. He knew he couldn’t leave the little dog there alone. But how could he take it home without his parents’ permission They’d always said taking care of a pet would distract him from his preparations for the College Entrance Examination.
Just as he was thinking, his phone rang. It was his mom, asking when he’d be home. Xiao Ming hesitated for a moment, then told her the truth about the dog-how small it was, how scared it looked, and how he couldn’t bear to leave it in the rain. There was a pause on the other end of the phone, and Xiao Ming held his breath, waiting for her reply, his fingers gently stroking the dog’s wet fur to calm both the pet and himself.

M: Hello, everyone. Our school has decided on a variety of environmental activities. Let me give you an idea about some of these activities.
Firstly, Mondays and Tuesdays will be walk-to-school days. That means everyone will go to school on foot. Anyone living far away may use public transport, but they must walk at least half a kilometer. In this way, the school not only encourages students and teachers to exercise, but it also helps to reduce air pollution.
Secondly, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, all classes take turns looking after our school garden.
After school finishes on Fridays, you will have the opportunity to attend lectures about the dangers our environment faces, what the solutions are, and what we can all do to be environmentally responsible. The speakers will be either our teachers from our school or scientists from our local community.
In addition, there will be a special event once every month. For example, next weekend, we are having an art exhibition. All the art students have made some fantastic things from recycled materials. This exhibition is going to be held at the school gym from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
That’s all from me. Thank you.

Attention, please. I have an announcement to make.
An exhibition on the works of Xu Beihong will be held in our school art club at 8:00 a.m. this Saturday. As we all know, Mr. Xu is one of the most influential artists at home and abroad. Therefore, the exhibition is worthy of being visited. The highlight of the works on display is The Running Horse. In the painting, you’ll see a running horse, whose hair makes you feel as if it were to fly out of the painting and emerge before you.
Hope you will enjoy yourself and do remember to write a review about the visit.
67. To Xiao Ming’s surprise, his mom asked him to bring the dog home. His just added gently, “Just keep it safe from the rain.” Overjoyed, he wrapped the puppy in his jacket and rode slowly back, cradling it close. At home, his mom welcomed them with a towel and warm milk. Together they dried the shivering little dog, and Xiao Ming named it “Rain”, after the day they met. Watching Rain lap up the milk, his heart filled with warmth.
In the following weeks, Rain became a part of Xiao Ming’s busy senior three life. Each morning, Rain would see him off by the door; each night, it curled quietly by his desk as he studied. Its steady presence turned long hours of revision into calm companionship. Stroking Rain’s soft fur became Xiao Ming’s small comfort during stressful moments. Caring for Rain taught him to balance responsibility and study, and the joyful moments they shared brought light to his final school year.
