In the summer of 2013, I volunteered at an autism (自闭症) center in Beijing. At first, I was just curious and wanted to help. But when I met the children, I was deeply touched. They rarely spoke, each one living in their own quiet world. I wasn’t trained in art, but I painted with them every week. Slowly, I saw that their drawings had a special kind of beauty: honest, free and full of emotion. In their world, I found a new way to look at life.
This experience inspired me to create the brand Half Smile in 2014. I wanted to turn the children’s drawings into art products — T-shirts, phone cases and bags — that people would enjoy and buy. It was a way to create value and income for people with autism, not just accept donations. Every time a product is sold, the young artist receives a copyright fee.
There were two main reasons behind this idea. First, I wanted to help change how society sees people with autism — from those who receive help to those who can offer something meaningful. When others like and buy their artwork, they become creators with value. This gives them confidence and respect. Second, a social business model offers a more stable and lasting path. It reduces the need for donations and helps create a long-term effect.
The hardest part of combining public good with business is changing how people think. Many still believe that some companies use charity to get sympathy and make money, which leads to doubt and misunderstanding about businesses. However, if we never let these children share their talents outside charity events, we’re limiting their future. A business model isn’t perfect, but it’s one way to build lasting opportunities. It shows that care and business can work together.
Changing minds takes time. But if a T-shirt with a child’s artwork can start a conversation about fairness, creativity or how we contribute to society — then maybe we are moving in the right direction.
24.Why did the writer create Half Smile
A.Because he wanted to change his present life. B.Because he got inspiration from his volunteering.
C.Because he wanted to make more income from it. D.Because he could find his love for painting.
25.How did the writer help the children with autism
A.By turning their drawings into products. B.By helping them make more paintings.
C.By volunteering more with them. D.By receiving more donations.
26.What is the biggest challenge to Half Smile according to paragraph 4
A.Children’s limited talent. B.People’s misunderstanding about it.
C.Limited income from it. D.People’s not caring about charity.
27.What is the writer’s attitude toward the future of Half Smile
A.Unconcerned. B.Doubtful. C.Negative. D.Positive.
Although life has mostly returned to normal after the COVID-19 pandemic, working from home is still popular. According to a survey by Nicholas Bloom of Stanford University and his colleagues, people in English-speaking countries especially enjoy remote work. The survey showed that, on average, college-educated Canadians work from home 1.9 days a week, Britons 1.8 days and Americans 1.6 days. In comparison, South Koreans work from home much less — only 0.5 days a week on average.
Bloom and his team say that cultural differences play a big role in these preferences. Whether a society values individual freedom or group cooperation can affect how much people accept remote work. Leaders in more individual-focused cultures are more comfortable giving freedom, and workers feel more relaxed working from home.
Remote work has been discussed a lot in recent years. Supporters say it helps people focus and avoid being disturbed when they are doing difficult tasks. Also, working from home can reduce housing problems, as people can live in places farther from the city, where housing is cheaper, according to The Economist. Kory Kantenga from LinkedIn told CNBC that as the population is aging and our workforce is set to shrink, “employers are going to... do more to attract employees, and offering flexible work might be the thing that they have to do.”
However, remote work also has downsides. Some people find it hard to separate work and home life, and others who enjoy talking to coworkers may feel lonely. Some workers may also be treated unfairly if they are not seen in the office, as noted by US News.
“The world of work today feels like an incomplete puzzle — a complex set of pieces that we know belong together but don’t yet have a picture to guide us,” Forbes reported. “We finally accept that we don’t have all the answers — and start building a new way forward.”
28.What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A.To make a summary. B.To make the readers think.
C.To lead to the topic. D.To attract reader’s interest.
29.What affects their attitude toward working from home
A.Culture-related factors. B.Employers’ preferences.
C.Geographical locations. D.Distances between working places and home.
30.Which has the closest meaning with the underlined word in paragraph 3
A.Fall. B.Increase. C.Change. D.Quit.
31.What can be inferred from the text
A.Nicholas Bloom and his colleagues enjoy remote work.
B.Managers in individual-focused cultures give freedom.
C.Remote work can help solve the aging problem.
D.The author is completely in favor of remote work.
Morningside Park in Miami, on the east coast of the US, will soon start a new project to improve the environment. Our team has developed BIOCAP tiles (砖) using 3D printing, which will be installed on the present seawall there this year. With their special design, these tiles will help deal with rising sea levels and bring back nature along the coastline.
Seawalls are usually made with concrete (混凝土) to prevent waves from damaging the land and flooding people’s homes. They usually range from about 1.8 to 3 meters in height. However, traditional seawalls can harm the environment. Their flat surfaces take away the habitat areas that sea organisms depend on. These organisms help keep the water clear and clean by screening out extra nutrients and pollutants. For example, an adult oyster can filter 75 to 190 liters of water daily.
BIOCAP tiles are designed with lines, cracks and small pockets. These features copy natural coastline conditions and create tiny homes for sea creatures. The wavy patterns also increase the total surface area, so that the organisms have more space to use. In addition, shaded spots on the tiles provide cooler micro-environments, supporting life as more heat events happen due to climate change.
Another benefit of the tiles is that they can better reduce the impact of waves. When waves hit a natural coastline, their energy is gradually taken in by uneven surfaces and plants. However, when waves strike straight concrete seawalls, the energy is reflected right back into the water. This reflection can strengthen wave action, make erosion worse at the base of the wall and create more dangerous conditions during storms.
The tiles’ shapes are based on how water behaves with different surfaces at high and low tide. Some tiles bend inward while others outward, and they are placed at different heights along the seawall. This results in surfaces that spread out wave energy by copying the natural way it fades on untouched shorelines.
32.What is the main advantage of BIOCAP tiles over traditional seawalls
A.They are more friendly to the environment. B.They are more cost-efficient.
C.They help keep the water clean. D.They can stop the sea levels from rising.
33.What is the function of the example of oysters in paragraph 2
A.To list a kind of sea life. B.To prove the surface is flat.
C.To explain the harm of traditional seawall. D.To show how sea animals harm the water.
34.Why are BIOCAP tiles shaped with lines and cracks
A.Because it can save materials. B.Because it can frighten away sea animals.
C.Because it can make the walls more beautiful. D.Because it can create more room for organisms.
35.What can be the best title of this text
A.Perfect Coastline conditions in Miami. B.3D printed tiles replacing traditional seawalls.
C.A new wave hitting the coastline in Miami. D.3D printed tiles helping nature.
How to Study Effectively
Learning how to study effectively is a skill that will help you throughout your high school years and beyond. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your study time.
36 . Find a quiet, well-lit place where you won’t be disturbed. It could be a desk in your room, a corner of the library, or a quiet café. Make sure all the materials you need — books, notebooks, pens, and a calculator — are within reach so you don’t have to get up and break your concentration.
Once you have your space, plan your study sessions. 37 . Instead of planning a four-hour marathon, break your work into manageable sessions of 30 — 50 minutes, with short 10-minute breaks in between. This technique, often called the Pomodoro Technique, can help you maintain focus.
Active learning is much more effective than passive reading. Simply reading your notes is not enough. You need to actively engage with the material. Try to explain a concept in your own words as if you were teaching it to someone else. Create flashcards for key terms or dates. Draw diagrams or mind maps to connect ideas visually. 38 .
Another powerful method is to practice remembering information. 39 . Testing yourself forces your brain to recall the information, strengthening the neural pathways. You can use practice questions from your textbook, create your own quizzes, or ask a friend to test you.
Finally, don’t forget the importance of sleep. 40 . When you sleep, your brain processes and consolidates the information you’ve learned during the day. Pulling an all-nighter might seem like a good idea, but it will likely leave you tired and less able to remember what you studied.
By following these strategies, you can study smarter, not just harder, and achieve better results.
A.Set a specific goal for each session
B.This means testing yourself on the material
C.While you study, it’s helpful to listen to music
D.It is important to create a concentrated study space
E.Getting enough sleep is vital to strengthen your memory
F.Therefore, you should always study with your classmates
G.This process helps move information from your short-term to your long-term memory

Buried in the Snow
Snow began to fall across Italy’s Apennine Mountains in January and lasted for days. From his home in Rome, Matt watched the weather with concern. He and his wife. Nora, had planned to stay at a hotel, but now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were caught in a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.
When they awoke the next day, they found the snow had continued overnight. The cars in the parking lot were hidden under the snow. While they were having breakfast, the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude (震级) of 5.7 had struck the mountain. “Let’s get out of here!” Matt shouted to his wife. They made their way to the parking lot, where others were digging out their cars.
With most cars freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a two-meter-high wall of snow. Matt climbed out of his car to check. There was no road in sight “We’re trapped!” he told his wife. With no other choice, they made their way back to the hotel.
They managed to get back to the hotel before dark. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way as it flowed down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those trapped inside the hotel were buried in the icy ruins.

W: Good afternoon and welcome to Stanton University. I’m here to tell you about the various dorms we have. We aim to offer accommodation to all first-year students. First of all, there’s Brown Hall, which is not the most modern of buildings, but it is very popular. Unlike the other halls, it has recently had a gym built in its basement. Another option is Blake Residence, built like a large house. Everybody cooks and eats together. It has a private garden and is even more peaceful because this is an all-girls residence but boys can visit it. The largest one we have is Queen’s Building and this has been upgraded recently. The original parking area has been built on and each bedroom now has its own shower room. A further option is the Parkway Flats with a preservation order. This has meant that only a limited amount could be done to upgrade it, and the surrounding area is important. So parking is not permitted around the flats. However, the flats do have many extra facilities such as a special computer room, a small library and a self-service restaurant. The cost of meals is covered in the fees so it does look a bit more expensive.

67. When Matt came to, he found himself stuck in the darkness. He lay on his stomach, trying to move. His left leg had been twisted and couldn’t move at all. He realized to his horror that he was buried alive. “Nora! Nora!” he called, but there was no response. In fact, he could hear nothing at all. The whole world was dead silent. Despair washed over him. He asked himself again and again, “Who is going to save me ”
It was not until the next morning that the rescuers finally arrived. Without any hesitation, they started searching for survivors. They soon discovered signs of life beneath the remains of the hotel. It took a great effort to remove the thick snow before they could begin cutting into the roof. With an opening made, they carefully lowered themselves down into the hotel. Once they were inside, they heard a weak voice crying for help. It was Matt. He and his wife were rescued, along with all the other survivors. The couple felt lucky to be alive!
