Krystal Sheehan's hobbies include walking dogs at the U.S. National Arboretum, feeding dogs cups of whipped cream and cuddling with dogs on her couch. Yet Sheehan doesn't own a dog. She loves spending time with them, she said, but she doesn't have time to care for one every day.
She hangs out with one almost every week, though, through a D. C. animal shelter that encourages people to take out its dogs for a few hours. It's one of many programs that have emerged across the, United States, giving people and dogs a chance to spend time together without making a major commitment.
Psychologist Kerri Rodriguez, who leads a group at the University of Arizona that researches animal-human interactions, said when people interact with dogs, oxytocin, known as the "love hormone," increases in both species. This is true even if you' re petting someone else's friendly dog. “They love us unconditionally,” Rodriguez said of dogs. “And, for a lot of people, that can be really therapeutic in itself, just being able to bond with this animal, no questions asked.”
Animal Care Centers of NYC, which calls its lending program Shelter Ski p Day, gives volunteers bingo cards that list a task on each square. The Shelters involved in it, many of which are overcrowded, hope the outings make their dogs more adoptable. Brandywine ValleySPCA makes business cards for each dog and gives volunteers black backpacks that say “WEARE ON A FIELD TRIP. YOU CAN ADOPT THIS DOG. (IT'S OKAY TO BE EXCITED)” Shelters encourage volunteers to post photos and videos of the dogs, which wear vests that say “ADOPT ME” on Instagram and TikTok.
If the shelter gives Sheehan an energetic dog, she walk and play at Rock Creek Park or the National Arboretum. If she is busy or the shelter lends them a calm dog, she snuggle with the dog at her apartment. Sheehan said she's sad each time she returns a dog. But then she remembers: She can do it all over again with another dog the following week.

NEW YORK, New York-Bookworm alert: Merriam- Webster announced Thursday it has taken the rare step of fully revising and reimagining one of its most popular dictionaries with a fresh edition that adds over 5,000 new words, including “petrichor,” “teraflop,” “dumbphone” and “ghost kitchen.”
The 12th edition of “Merriam- Webster's Collegeiate Dictionary” comes 22 years after the book's last hard- copy update and amid declining U. S. sales for dictionaries overall, according to Circana BookScan. It will be released on November 18.
The company removed two sections of the “College’s” 11th edtrion that had biographical and geographical entries to make room for the new content. Greg Barlow, Merriam- Webster's president, exclusively told The Associated Press ahead of the announcement that people no longer use dictionaries to learn such things as the location of Kalamazoo or who Nikolai Rimsky was. For that, they reach for the internet.
“We wanted to make the ‘Collegiate’ more useful, a better design, more interesting,” Barlow said. “We wanted it to be more rewarding to browse, more fun to look through, and to really be practical for research, but also a beautiful book.”
Merriam- Webster, the country's leading dictionary company, sells about 1.5 million of them a year. Most are regularly revised but not fully restructured like the “Collegiate,” Barlow said. “While the print dictionary is not at all important to the growth and profitability of this wonderful language company, it's still our heart,” Barlow said. “There are people out there who just love books, and we love books.”
“I do think there is that longing that people have to be able to pull a dictionary off the shelf and look up a word,” Kat Sarfas, marketing manager for nonfiction at Barnes & Noble, said. “There's a certain desire to have these kinds of reference materials at home. It may be something that people feel like, as educated people, we should own.”
28. Why does the author mention the time gap and sales situation in paragraph 2
A. To predict future book sales. B. To highlight the release's rarity.
C. To explain the delay reasons. D. To show the company's profits.
29. What change was made to College Dictionary ro r its 12th edition
A. It added over 5,000 biographical entries:
B. It deleted biographical and geographical sections.
C. It focused on increasing sales of print dictionaries in the U.S..
D. It provided information about the location of Kalamzoo.
30. What is the goal of revising Merriam- Webster's Collegeate Dictionary
A To sell 1.5 million copies around the world every year.
B. To be the best- selling dictionary in the United States.
C. To replace all regular revisions with full restructurings.
D. To become a practical and enjoyable reference book.
31. What is implied about print dictionaries'.
A. They are no longer useful for research due to internet access.
B Their sales in the U. S. have been on the rise in recent years.
C. Some people still value owning physical reference books.
D. They are the main source of profit for Merriam- Webster.

The days of high school football players huddled around their coach, eyes fixed on a chalkboard or dry- erase board as their coach diagrams plays and shouts adjustments, may come to an end, just like oversized shoulder pads and high- top cleats.
Modern- day coaches are now armed with internet- connected tablets that give them access to plays mere seconds after they occur. Large- screen televisions are common on sidelines, allowing coaches to address entire teams of players at the same time.
If a correction needs to be made or a scheme changed, coaches have the information literally at their fingertips. “With the system we use, there's a lag time of five seconds from when the play happens to when it gets into our system,” Mounds View, Minnesota, football coach Aaron Moberg said. “It's an awesome competitive advantage. We can see plays and make adjustments in real time. We don't have to wait to do them at halftime.”
The areas behind the end lines of football fields, typically reserved for bands, cheerleaders and field maintenance equipment, are now filled with towers standing roughly 40 feet that house remote- controlled, high- definition video cameras for recording games and practices. videos are uploaded and digitally stored, allowing coaches and coordinators to analyze plays and performances and create cut- ups, or edited highlight reels. “It is pretty incredible stuff,” said Norwood- Young America Central head coach Chris Goodwin, who was involved with filming games for the Gophers during the Glen Mason era. “We can make adjustments after one series. That's huge.”
Drones(无人机) have also become more common, though the aerial vehicles are not allowed at MSHSL- sanctioned events, games or沈mages for safety purposes and potential to create unwarranted distractions, according to the league's handbook. Member schools can, however, use drones at practices.
Cost can be a barrier, but Ostlund, head football coach at Rochester Century High School said most experienced coaches saw the value in the new tech. As these tools evolve and become more accessible, they are set to redefine not only how plays are drawn up, but also how young athletes learn. adapt, and understand the game itself.
32. What is the function of Paragraph 1
A. To summarize football's long history. B. To introduce the topic by contrast.
C. To criticize traditional coaching methods. D. To explain high school football rules.
33. What does “it” in paragraph 4 refer to
A The remote-controlled, high- definition video cameras on the towers.
B. The process of uploading and digitally storing game videos.
C. The entire system of recording, storing, and analyzing video.
D. The traditional areas behind end lines used for bands and equipment.
34. Why are drones not allowed in MSHSL- sanctioned events
A. They are too expensive for most schools to afford.
B. They cannot provide high- definition videos for analysis.
C. They will interfere with the work of cheerleaders and bands.
D They may cause safety problems and unnecessary distractions.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the passage
A. The Evolution of Football Equipment for Players
B. The Challenges of Applying New Technology in Football
C. How Technology Changes High School Football Coaching
D. Famous Coaches' Opinions on Modern Football Technology

Soilless farming, as the term suggests, refers to a cultivation approach where plants are cultured and grown without the use of the soil. It is also a systematic technique where plants are grown without the use of soil as a rooting environment. 36
Due to lacking originality, conventional farming has many processes and requires the manure(肥料) of chemical mixtures to make the soil rich in nutrients. 37 Nutrients are provided to the plants, majorly in liquid form, and their needs are met throughout life, from seeds to ripe fruit.
In many soilless farming systems, water is recycled and reused until the plants are ready to harvest. 38 Additionally, it reduces the physical labor and energy required from workers, helping them achieve higher profits while keeping costs very low.
By following standardized steps throughout the entire production process, soilless farming can supply crops to the market every day, meeting consumers' needs. When countries that rely on food imports see how productive this farming method is, they will begin growing crops locally all year round. 39 .
40 The rate of pathogens(病原体) attacks on the farm will be close to zero due to the controlled planting environment, and if pathogens do occur, the infected plants can be easily isolated to prevent the spread of infection to the entire farm. Developed countries worldwide are anticipated to adopt this farming mode, as it reduces food import volumes and improves domestic food availability.
A. However, soil farming requires more workload.
B. The quality of the harvested food may be controlled.
C. After all, food imports might pollute the environment
D. Hence, soilless farming is an alternative to dry regions.
E. With this method, crops can be planted in nearly any location.
F. Soilless farming involves less workload and can promote plant growth.
G. In this way, even seasonal produce can be harvested anytime.

For a while, Anna and her mother Vera had been arguing about whether to adopt a dog after Anna turned twelve. Vera was hesitant about bringing a pet into their lives. This disagreement had cast a shadow over their relationship, making Anna feel unsure of her mother's love.
On the morning of her twelfth birthday, Anna noticed something near their garden walls while having breakfast. It took her a moment to figure out what it was, but eventually, she realized it was a little dog. Anna wondered what to do, but ultimately decided to go out. She couldn't just leave the dog alone!
Anna walked up to the dog and extended a hand. The dog took a few steps backward, but it didn't seem to be terrified of her. He began to sniff her hand just seconds later. Anna patted the dog on the head in response. The dog seemed comfortable with this gesture of affection and stood up to get closer to Anna.
Then, Anna saw a key underneath it. “What is that ” Anna wondered curiously. She picked it up and remembered one neighbor who told Anna that she was an expert of keys just the day before. She hurried to her neighbor's house, taking the dog and the key. When Anna came with the dog in her arms, her neighbor wowed in amazement. “I found it, along with this key,” Anna carefully placed the key on her neighbor's desk.
With a magnifying lens(放大镜), her neighbor examined the key and confidently told her,“I know what this key is for. You can get inside Velor Castle's garden with this key. It has information carved in tiny letters on it.” Though unsure, Anna reasoned, “Perhaps the dog’ s owners live there.”
The garden was nearby, so that's where Anna headed. At the garden gate, the anxious girl put the key into the keyhole. As soon as it clicked, the door was unlocked.

A Meaningful Campus Labor Day
Last Friday, our class participated in the Campus Labor Day, an event that left a deep impression on me.
Our task was to clean the school library. We were divided into groups: some dusted the shelves, others organized the books, and I was responsible for wiping the windows. Though it was tiring, we worked enthusiastically, encouraging each other along the way. Within two hours, the library looked spotless and tidy.
Through this labor, I realized the value of hard work and teamwork. Not only did we contribute to our school, but we also learned how to cooperate and solve problems together. This experience has taught me to appreciate the efforts of those who keep our campus clean and beautiful.

Vera and many others were inside! They burst into cheers as Anna appeared, colorful balloons floating around the garden table filled with gifts. Vera rushed forward, her eyes shining with excitement. “Surprise, sweetheart!” she cried, hugging Anna tightly. She explained that the key and the little dog were both part of a carefully planned experience. The neighbor had helped design this “treasure hunt” to lead Anna here. Vera admitted that she wanted Anna to prove her readiness for pet care through this journey. The dog, a gentle golden puppy, touched Anna’s hand warmly as if recognizing his new friend.
Hearing Vera’s words, Anna realized who the dog’s owners would be. Tears of joy flooded her eyes as she understood everything, including the arguments, her mother’s hesitation, and now this perfect gift. “So... he’s truly ours ” Anna whispered, her voice trembling with hope. Vera nodded, smiling through her own tears. “Happy birthday, my responsible girl.” The puppy barked happily, waving its tail as Anna knelt to embrace him. In that moment, all doubts about her mother’s love disappeared, replaced by the warmth of the tight hug they shared. It was the best birthday Anna could ever imagine.

21. C 根据原文第二段“If you don’t already have one, first create a Google account...” B 选项 Click the create button“点击创建按钮”,原文提到“click the ‘Create a New Map’ button”是在“访问网站”之后的操作,属于第三步,排除。
文章第二步明确指出“On the white box on the top left of the screen, click on the line of text saying ‘Untitled Map.’ Another white box will pop up where you can enter a name...” B. Clicking on the “Untitled Map” text. A. Clicking the “Add to map” button. C. Typing the name in the search bar. D. Editing the first location’s description.
根据文末 Tip 中提到“Add a description to each of your saved locations by clicking on them, then tapping the pencil icon.”

24. D 根据文章第一段中“She loves spending time with them, she said, but she doesn’t have time to care for one every day”可知,Sheehan 喜欢和狗相处,但没有时间每天照顾狗,这是她不养狗的核心原因。
25. C Rodriguez 提到狗会无条件爱人类,且“being able to bond with this animal... can be really therapeutic”,“therapeutic”意为“有治疗作用的”,由此可推断,与狗互动对人们的心理健康有积极影响。
26. C 由第三段最后一句“Shelters encourage people to post photos and videos of the dogs... on Instagram and TikTok”可知,收容所鼓励志愿者在社交媒体上发布狗的照片和视频,以帮助它们被收养。
29. B 根据原文第三段第一句“The company removed two sections of the ‘Collegiate's’ 11th edition that had biographical and geographical entries to make room for the new content”可知,第 12 版词典删除了第 11 版中的传记和地理条目部分,以容纳新内容。
31. C 根据最后一段 Barnes & Noble 营销经理的表述“there's a certain desire to have these kinds of reference materials at home”“as educated people, we should own”可推断,部分人仍重视拥有纸质参考书籍。A 选项“因互联网不再对研究有用”,原文韦氏总裁提到词典“practical for research”,故排除; B 选项“美国销量近年上升”与原文“declining U.S. sales for dictionaries overall”相反;D 选项“是韦氏词典公司的主要利润来源”与原文“not at all important to the growth and profitability”矛盾。
34. D 由第五段“for safety purposes and potential to create unwarranted distractions”可知,MSHSL 禁止在授权赛事中使用无人机,原因是安全问题和可能造成不必要的干扰。
此处体现作者希望蒙混过关的心理,与后文“Of course, he did.”
49. C 通过上文“I didn’t have a good voice, but in the midst of so many others...
57. marking
解析:本空位于逗号后,前半句“the first match...kicked off...”
58. spectators
59. against/ with考点:动词固定搭配(compete against/with)
62. fiercely
“the climax came in the 90th minute”是主句,空后“Yuzhong’s No. 7... scored...”
64. was named
65. energetic

(Text 6)
W: Come on, David, let’s go on the roller coaster.
M: Not going on that ride, Maria. It looks absolutely dangerous.
W: It will be fine. It’s completely safe. Look at all the people coming off laughing! This theme park has the best safety record!
M: You can go on it if you want, but there’s no way you’re getting me on there.
W: It won’t be any fun on my own. There are lots of rides here. Let’s find something we can both enjoy.
(Text 7)
W: Has your friend Nancy arrived at the cafe
M: No. She just texted me and said that she was in the parking lot near the cafe. We’ll get to the café in a few minutes.
W: OK. Can you tell me more about your friend
M: Of course. She was born in the countryside and grew up in the suburb of Bristol. She began her schooling at a local school there and then moved to a large and modern school in the city center.
W: Did she go to university in Bristol
M: Yes. She went to the University of Bristol at 18. She joined a university folk group and started singing.
W: So, she majored in music
M: No. Her father wanted her to study economics. But she was drawn to history. So, she chose her major according to her passion.
W: So cool.
(Text 8)
W: Hello, Mike. Could you come to the Sales Department
M: Hello, Joan. I’m not in the Technology Department. Right now, I’m on a business trip. What’s the matter
W: Oh, I need to print some reports for a meeting. But the printer in my office doesn’t work. My computer keeps searching for printers all the time.
M: Is the Wi-Fi working in your office
W: Let me check. Well, I can see the Wi-Fi on my computer, and the signal is quite strong.
M: Well, you should try to restart the printer and reconnect it to the Wi-Fi. It must have been running for too long.
W: OK, but how
M: I’ll send you a file of instructions provided by the printer producer. You just need to follow it. If you still can’t make it, turn to Luke. He is in the office today.
(Text 9)
W: What do you think is the one big thing that helps to make a child a reader
M: Well, there’s a lot of talk about how children learn to read and what strategy might be best. But actually, what makes a reader is a book. It’s finding the book that you really want to read, and so that’s the chemical moment when children discover the joy of reading.
W: Teenagers can also be quite negative about reading.
M: Yeah, but I think there’re lots of ways to get into reading and one of the things that’s very evident is that, um, films — far from putting children off reading the book — often guide children toward the original works.
W: Then has all the new media made young people read less
M: When television first hit, everyone said children would stop reading, and the curious thing is that children’s books are stronger now, much stronger than they were when children’s television first took hold. Children’s television has slightly declined, while books have increased. I always think the thing that really threatens reading is listening to music. I know you can do both, but most people don’t.
(Text 10)
W: Hi, I’m Charlotte Liebling. I once volunteered at a store that sold second-hand goods. I witnessed how beloved stuffed toys were given away with love, only to be sold for pennies or thrown away. It broke my heart, so I started the Loved Before toy-adoption agency. Here is how it works: When someone donates a toy by mail, they also share its story: its name, likes and dislikes, or an adventure it’s been on. My team and I clean each one, photograph it, and package it with its unique history. We believe that sharing what makes the toy unique helps potential new owners understand its value. Every Monday, we post new toys for “adoption” on our website. And we make a charitable donation of at least half of the profit from the sale of each toy. Since 2019, we’ve rehomed over 50,000 toys. But this isn’t just about saving stuffed toys from landfills. It’s about something bigger: teaching kids and adults that second-hand doesn’t mean “less than”. If we can change how people see a well-loved stuffed toy, maybe we can change how they see everything pre-owned — and that’s a future worth working for.
