I was visiting my parents in 2003 when my mom came out of their room with a puzzled look on her face. She’d been listening to the radio and heard an interview with a best-selling author of young adult fantasy novels (奇幻小说). The woman’s name was Tamora Pierce, the same as a young student my mom had taught nearly four decades before.
The Internet should be able to tell us. I found the author’s website quickly. She was a popular writer of books. I clicked on the biography link to scan for references to Burlingame Junior High, where my mom had worked, and my heart began to race when I spotted it at the bottom of the first section. Here was confirmation (确认) that my mother had taught a now-famous writer!
But my eyes came to a stop reading the next paragraph, in which Pierce described writing her first fiction as a sixth grader. “The next year, as I was creating my own stories, my English teacher, Mrs. Jacobson, introduced me to the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien,” the biography (传记) read. “I got hooked on fantasy, and then on science fiction, and both made their way into my stories.” My mother’s name was Mary Jacobson.
Within days, my dad had checked out all the Tamora Pierce books at the local library, and in one we found another surprise: a 1998 novel, which was dedicated (题献词) to “the teacher who shaped my life”. The teacher was Mary Jacobson. The dedication concluded, “A great teacher is above all other treasures.”
This story made me see my mom differently. We knew she was a teacher, but we had no idea what kind of teacher she had been. She was just 24 when she taught Pierce. Until 2011, when she passed away, we did know who she was.
24. Why did the mother wear a puzzled look in Paragraph 1
A. The interviewee was a best-selling writer. B. The author visited the parents unexpectedly.
C. The interviewee may be her former student. D. The young adult fantasy novels sold so well.
25. What information did the author find about Pierce
A. She suffered a lot to become a writer. B. She preferred fantasy to science fiction.
C. She took pride in the author’s mother. D. She was grateful to the author’s mother.
26. Which of the following can best describe Jacobson
A. Devoted and thankful. B. Inspiring and respectable.
C. Caring and demanding. D. Considerate and intelligent.
27. What’s the suitable title of the passage
A. Pierce: From a Student Writer to a Fantasy Queen
B. My Mother: A Creator of Well-known Writers
C. A Woman Writer with Gratitude for Her Teacher
D. An Ordinary Teacher Shaping a Famous Writer
C
We’ve all experienced it: You have important information you need to remember, and you’ll do anything it takes to keep it at the forefront of your brain. In this situation, rote memorization (死记硬背) may be your best — or even your only — option.
Rote memorization is when we repeat a piece of information until we remember it. One great example of it is the alphabet (字母表). When we are little, we don’t necessarily understand that our language is made up of the letters A to Z. But we memorize them in a specific order because we are taught to, and then we know the alphabet.
There are situations in which rote memorization can be helpful. “Rote memorization can be a useful learning tool in some situations, but its effectiveness depends on the type of information being learned and how it is applied,” says Dr. Aldrich Chan, neuropsychologist. He tells us that rote memorization helps us quickly recall basic facts and information such as vocabulary words or math formulas (公式). This can be particularly helpful in situations where immediate access to information is required, like during exams.
The act of memorizing through repetition also has its downsides. Chan notes that “rote memorization often does not promote a deep understanding of the material. Learners may be able to memorize facts or information without truly understanding their meaning or significance.” On the other hand, he explains that “meaningful learning focuses on understanding the basic concepts and principles, encouraging critical thinking, and promoting the integration (整合) of knowledge into broader contexts. Meaningful learning promotes long-term memory and the ability to apply knowledge flexibly.”
However, both rote memorization and meaningful learning have their place. The most important to keep in mind is that they are different, and rote memorization cannot stand in as an alternative to actual learning. Memorizing something doesn’t mean you understand it, and it doesn’t mean you can do anything with it.
28. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1
A. By giving an example. B. By providing a definition.
C. By creating a scene. D. By making a comparison.
29. Why does the author mention the alphabet in paragraph 2
A. To show how rote memorization works. B. To stress why learning in order is important.
C. To instruct us how to learn the alphabet. D. To introduce the disadvantages of repetition.
30. What can we learn about rote memorization from Dr. Aldrich Chan
A. It focuses on the concepts and principles. B. It helps promote a meaningful understanding.
C. It serves as useful tool for test preparation. D. It keeps knowledge in people’s brain for long.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards rote memorization
A. Negative. B. Objective. C. Uninterested. D. Supportive.
D
In 1921, Karel apek’s play R.U.R.: Rossum’s Universal Robots had its first public performance in Prague, and was translated into English the following year. He needed a name for the factory-produced humanoid workers of the story, and was thinking of coining something based on the word “labor”. But his brother Josef suggested an old Czech word for “forced labor”, robota. And the word “robot” was born.
If the apeks had known English, they might have chosen one of the words with relevant senses that were already in the language. “Automaton (自动化)” had been available since the 17th century and “android” since the 18th. But the clear sound of “robot” seemed to spark the public imagination, because within five years it was being used not only for intelligent artificial beings but for any machine capable of carrying out a complex set of movements.
In science fictions, the word took on new life, with writers such as Isaac Asimov writing well-regarded novels in which robots played a central role. It was these writers who first shortened “robot” to “bot”, but none of them could have expected the explosion of usages which arrived in the 1990s, as the shortened word came to be adopted in computing. Today, a bot is any piece of software that runs an automated task, such as in searching the Internet or playing computer games. It has also become a suffix (后缀), with the function of the “bot” explained in the other part of the word, as in searchbot, infobot, spybot and warbot.
As early as 1923, George Bernard Shaw had applied the word “robot” to people who act automatically, without thinking or emotion, usually because of the repetitive work they have to do. Now anyone having automaton-like behavior risks being labeled. A movie star called Samantha who has taken on the same type of character too many times might have her roles described as “Samanthabots.” And in 2009 “Obamabots” arrived — people who support Barack Obama without really knowing anything about him.
32. What does the underlined word “coining” mean in paragraph 1
A. Delivering. B. Imagining. C. Recommending. D. Inventing.
33. How did the word “robot” develop in the 1990s
A. It was no longer linked with machines. B. It was shortened and used in computing.
C. It was gradually replaced by “android”. D. It was only used in well-regarded novels.
34. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The effect of “robot” on people’s behavior.
B. The popularity of “robot” among movie stars.
C. The application of “robot” in different situations.
D. The connection of “robot” with public figures.
35. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A science fiction. B. A technology newspaper.
C. A writer’s biography. D. A language encyclopedia.

Fun Facts About the English Language
The English language is spoken by millions of people worldwide and is famous for its many curiosities. From unusual spelling rules to surprising vocabulary, it offers learners both fun and challenges.
Hundreds of new words are added to dictionaries every year. In 2020 alone, more than 500 were included in Merriam-Webster. 36 This shows that language grows together with them.
Letters also play curious roles. “E” is by far the most common, appearing in about 11% of all words. It occurs in “the,” the most used word, and in verbs like “be.” 37 With so many appearances, it is naturally the most typed letter on keyboards.
Pronunciation brings even greater challenges. The combination “ough,” for example, can be pronounced in ten different ways. In one sentence — “A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough” — all of them appear. 38 These irregularities remind learners that English spelling has never been fully unified.
Culture adds more surprises. The United States, for instance, has never declared English its official national language, even though it dominates (主导) daily life. 39 This shows that a language’s influence depends more on practice than on law.
English continues to evolve. Dictionaries expand every year, old words gain new meanings, and learners everywhere adapt to its changes. 40
A. That is why “E” is called the king of letters.
B. The letter “E” is mainly used in specific writing.
C. Such a fact may surprise many language learners.
D. This mix of rules and exceptions puzzles learners.
E. New words often reflect culture, science, and technology.
F. These examples show how English language affects culture.
G. As a result, English stays one of the most active languages in history.

My beyond-busy summer
I know how it feels to be so busy that things are not going smoothly, ending up in a mess (一团糟).
One day, I was talking to my mom about summer activities. “I want to do everything,” I said. I want to be a junior instructor for the Little Dragons Karate (空手道) Camp. I have to be on the summer swim team. And my friend Ollie and I already have two customers for our dog-walking business.
“Everything is a lot,” my mom frowned. “You might be biting off more than you can chew.” “Don’t worry,” I grinned (露齿笑). “I have strong teeth!” My mom smiled back, “In this case, it’s your organizational skills, not your teeth, that need to be strong.” “No problem!” I claimed.
The first week really was no problem. Ollie was out of town and the karate camp hadn’t started, so my swim stuff was all I needed to worry about.
The next week was great too. I swam my fastest freestyle time yet, and a Little Dragon at the karate camp told me I was his favorite teacher ever! I did learn, though, that staying organized with two activities is harder than with one. My backpack was already stuffed with a towel and swim things, so I had to find a different backpack for my karate gear (装备). Riding my bike from the karate camp to the pool with two backpacks was a little bit of a challenge. But I still had it under control until Ollie got back.
“We’re late getting our business together!” he said. “We’ll have to spend every spare minute preparing.” “But I don’t have any spare minutes!” I said. “Did you forget we agreed to walk Alfie every Saturday And Muffin on Tuesdays at 4:00 ” Ollie asked. I couldn’t let Ollie down, so I picked up a third backpack and filled it with dog toys, treats and plastic bags. “There!” I said. “I’m all set.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Paragraph 1: However, it didn’t take long for everything to turn into a mess.
Paragraph 2: I hated admitting I was wrong, but I knew I needed to change.

写作:第一节:
In order to raise students’ awareness of healthy lifestyles, our school held a series of activities themed “Scientific Weight Management” last week.
There are various activities including lectures by experts, discussions on healthy eating, and fitness classes to teach students how to keep in shape effectively. Students actively participated, learning practical tips for maintaining a healthy weight. Many participants reported they felt motivated to promote healthy eating habits and encourage physical activity.
Overall, the activities were a great success. Not only did they make students more aware of weight management but also inspired students to fight for lifelong well-being.
第二节:
However, it didn’t take long for everything to turn into a mess. On Tuesday, I rushed from karate camp to the pool, only to realize I had brought the wrong backpack—my swimsuit was missing! Then, I completely forgot about Muffin’s walk until Ollie called me at 4:30, upset. The next day, I wore my karate uniform to swim practice by mistake. My mom raised an eyebrow but said nothing. I was exhausted, late everywhere, and my three backpacks became a symbol of my chaos.
I hated admitting I was wrong, but I knew I needed to change. That evening, I sat down with my mom and Ollie. I decided to quit the swim team for the rest of the summer and focus on karate camp and the dog-walking business. To my surprise, Ollie offered to handle the Tuesday walks if I took Saturdays. I have learned that being busy isn’t bad—but being overwhelmed helps no one. Now, with just two backpacks and a clearer schedule, I finally enjoy my summer.

M: We’re doing some projects on Europe. We have to choose one of the countries that belong to the European Union.

M: Do French teens like fast food such as chips
W: Well, we don’t really like that. We usually have quick breakfast, sandwiches at lunch and a family dinner at around 8:00 to 8:30 in the evening. The younger teenagers like to eat hamburgers at McDonald’s.
M: Paris is well known for popular clothes, so I’m sure it offers French teens the most up-to-date clothes to choose from.
W: Exactly. I like to wear clothes by Agnes B., a popular French designer. I think Agnes B. clothes
are kind of classic and lovely. One of my favorites is a silver jacket because it came from one of the shows and most importantly there is no other like it.

M: Well, it all happened last Thursday. I was in a hurry to get to the gym early to calm down a bit before the game. I was all stressed out about the game when I left home, but I got in the car and started to drive toward the gym. All of a sudden my phone rang—it was my sister Ann.
