Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America. Death Valley isn’t an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain a year and it’s hot, too. In July, temperature often reaches over 46℃. There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体). But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice. Then the strong wind—like a large hand—can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can “walk” on their own in Death Valley.
Although the weather condition in Death Valley is terrible, there is still filled with lives. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. About 40 years ago, scientists from the United States started to make self-driving cars (无人驾驶汽车). The most famous one was made by Google (谷歌) in 2009. In Brazil and Indonesia, the number of people living in the rainforest (雨林) is rising, so the rainforest itself is becoming smaller.
During the 20th century, people cut down lots of trees in the rainforest. More and more people in Brazil and Indonesia moved into rainforest areas to find land for living. Local farmers cut down trees to grow crops (庄稼). Large companies (公司) also moved into the rainforest to develop their factories.

A lot of animals travel from one place to another. We call this migration.
In Africa, large animals, like elephants and zebras, migrate to find food and water. They usually follow the same ways every year.
A lot of birds migrate to find food and better weather, too. They are usually birds that eat insects. They spend the summer in northern Europe, because there are lots of insects there. In the winter there aren't any insects, so the birds fly south to southern Europe and Africa.
