In the US, in primary schools and high schools, students celebrate “spirit week” in late September. It is a week when you can refresh yourself and get ready for the rest of the semester (学期). We also call it “homecoming week”, because our families can be allowed to visit our schools during this period.
There are a large number of funny activities held for spirit week, such as dancing, kicking a ball, and so on. However, I think the coolest activity in spirit week this year was the weird (奇特的) dress show. Spirit week provides a chance to dress up and show spirit.
We had a special weird dress show every day. Each class had different colors to wear on Monday. On Tuesday you needed to dress like one or more of your friends.
Wednesday was the best day ever—clash (冲突) day! Everyone wore clothes that didn’t match. Some students wore one green sock and one red sock at the same time. I saw a student who on the top half was wearing a very formal white shirt and blue jacket but on the bottom half had tiger print pants.
Thursday was the crazy hairdo day. I would never have imagined that someone would wear a very strange colorful wig (假发) to class, but that actually happened. I just wore a really small part of a pink wig on my head. I am not that crazy. Friday was a day for the school. We wore something with our school name on it.
This could be the best week in the whole school year. Students need breaks from their studies sometimes. I am eagerly (渴望地) waiting for next year’s spirit week.

Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shennong, a man who had an ox (牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering (受折磨) from diseases, he built ladders and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.
The legend (传说) makes Shennongjia in Hubei an inviting place for tourists. Traveling there is a unique experience, as you can see scenery of the four seasons from different altitudes (高度). “When the bottom of the mountain is summer, the top is spring and while the foothill is autumn, the top is covered with ice,” local people say of the special climate of Shennongjia.
Shennongjia is also home to 5,000 species of animals and plants. Many animals in danger live there, such as the golden monkey, the clouded leopard and the Asian black bears.
One interesting and mysterious thing about Shennongjia is its legend of wild men. Some people once claimed that they saw big prints or big-foot creatures (生物). Yet so far, scientists haven’t proved it is true and some say they are just bears.

On May 9, a Chinese attending the festival put a video on Douyin. In the video, a line of mantou was lying among the baked foods on show.
The video quickly went viral on the Internet. In no time, “Chinese Steamed Buns Compete at the French Bread Festival” became a hot topic. It brought much attention to mantou. As a main food, it is seen every day on Chinese dinner tables. It is amazing that mantou had such a chance to go to France and compete with the foods from different countries.
Mantou is made with wheat flour and yeast (酵母). And then it is steamed for about half an hour. When it is freshly cooked, it produces a nice smell and feels soft. And most people cannot wait to have a bite (咬一口). Mantou can be also enjoyed in many ways. For example, it can be fried or baked to golden brown.

During the three-day New Year holiday in 2024, over 3 million tourists poured into Harbin. Many of them came from southern China. Harbin locals gave these visitors a cute nickname (昵称) “Nanfang xiaotudou” or “Southern potatoes”. It is because southern people are usually shorter and they look like small potatoes when wearing thick jackets and hats. To Harbin people, this name is not to make fun of southerners, but to create a sense (感觉) of warmth with humor.
Harbin tried everything to meet tourists’ needs, especially those from the south. Cooks carefully cut the local frozen pear into small pieces. Different kinds of concerts were held in shopping malls. A drone (无人机) lifted a man-made moon for tourists to take photos. Harbin really went all out to make them happy.
However, even though they did all these to please the southern tourists, this nickname “Southern potatoes” sparked (导致) a heat discussion on the Internet. While Harbin locals use the name to show warmth and good will, some tourists feel that calling them “Southern potatoes” is making fun of their height.
Even though people from the Northeast are kind and warm-hearted, we have to realize that there is still some discrimination (歧视) in several parts of China. It’s important to make the world a more welcome place. After all, everyone likes kindness and dislikes discrimination, whether it’s on purpose or not.
70. Why do Harbin locals call southerners “Southern potatoes”
A. Because southerners like to eat small potatoes.
B. Because southerners sell small potatoes in Harbin.
C. Because Harbin locals want to make fun of southerners’ height.
D. Because southerners look like small potatoes in thick jackets and hats.
71. What is the main idea of the second paragraph
A. Harbin cooks made some nice food for southern tourists.
B. Southern travelers were very happy with Harbin tourism.
C. Harbin tried their best to please tourists and make them happy.
D. Many tourists like the food there.
72. How should we treat people from different places according to the last paragraph
A. We should be kind and welcome.
B. We should not discriminate them on purpose.
C. We should do everything to make them happy.
D. We should treat them according to what they like.

During the time of Three Kingdoms, there lived a man named Meng Zong. He lost his father when he was a child. When his mother was old and sick, the doctor said that fresh bamboo shoots (竹笋) could save her life. But it was winter. Meng Zong had no idea how he could get them. He went into a bamboo field and cried. His love moved the earth. The ground cracked (裂开). Many bamboo shoots came out. Meng Zong carried them home and made them into a soup for his mother. This is one story from the Twenty-four Examples of Filial Piety (孝顺) Stories. The stories were chosen and edited by Guo Jujing during the Yuan Dynasty. All the stories are about family conduct (行为) in Chinese history.
In the past, filial piety was a very important duty in Chinese tradition. To be a filial son, one had to completely obey (服从) his parents during his lifetime. As he grew older, he had to take the best care of them. Today the form of filial piety is a little different from ancient times. People don’t stay in one place for a lifetime.
