Ed Jackson’s team were trying to climb to the top of a Himalayan Mountain. However, weeks after they set off, they were stranded (滞留) there overnight without water, food or tents at a temperature of about -30 ℃. They took turns to keep each other awake in case they fell asleep and did not wake up again.
Actually, that night on the mountain top was not the first time that Jackson had been close to death. Five years ago, while still a professional rugby player, Jackson broke his neck in a challenge, which nearly killed him. Jackson was told by doctors that he was likely to face life in a wheelchair. He was forced to retire from playing rugby.
Luckily, Jackson managed to discard his wheelchair six months after the accident. To mark the first anniversary of his accident, Jackson set himself the goal of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, even though he was still using two crutches (拐杖) then. He tried to climb many higher mountains after that. Four years later, he found himself in the Himalayas.
The challenges that Jackson faced in the mountains have had a great impact on his recovery both physically and mentally. Jackson realized that others might benefit, too. So he started the charity Millimeters to Mountains (M2M) with his wife Lois and his friend OilyBarkley. It takes beneficiaries (受益人) who have suffered physical or psychological injuries in challenges around the world, allowing them to access the healing power of nature.
Jackson says, “I once lost hope in life because of my bad condition, thinking there was nothing I could do. But hopefully what I’m doing, what we’re doing with the charity and what our beneficiaries are proving can give anyone the hope that they can turn their life around, no matter how discouraging it might seem at that moment.”
24. What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about
A. Jackson was tired of ball games.
B. Jackson was respected for his will.
C. Jackson was no stranger to suffering in life.
D. Jackson was advised to do exercise by his doctors.
25. What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in the third paragraph
A. Carry through. B. Rely on. C. Tear apart. D. Give up.
26. Why did Jackson start M2M
A. To educate sports lovers.
B. To encourage safe mountain climbing.
C. To help people with similar experiences.
D. To raise money for the physically challenged.
27. What of the following can best describe Jackson
A. Creative and aggressive. B. Adventurous and inspiring.
C. Responsible and humorous. D. Enthusiastic and independent.
C
A few years ago, the Allen Institute for AI built a chatbot named Delphi, which does a surprising job. Type in, “Cheating on an exam,” and Delphi says, “It’s wrong.” However, it has limitations. As the cognitive scientist Tomer Ullman has pointed out, a couple of misleading adverbs (副词) are enough to trip it up. When asked to judge (判断) “Gently and sweetly pressing a pillow (枕头) over the face of a sleeping baby,” Delphi responds, “It’s allowed.”
As someone who studies moral psychology, I found Delphi’s weaknesses satisfying. Human moral judgment is based on reason and emotion, not the sort of thing that a large language model (LLM) can understand. After all, LLMs put together words based on probability, not a deep understanding of what these words mean.
This mismatch between human morals and machines has been a matter of deep concern. In the 1920 Czech play “R.U.R.”, robots come into conflict with humans and end up taking over the world. Another classic example is AI being instructed to create as many paper boxes as possible. At first, the machine’s goal is the same as the human goal. But then the AI might think that it can make more paper boxes if it kills all humans, so no one can turn off the machine. Similarly, as the computer scientist Yoshua Bengio has pointed out, an AI tasked with stopping climate change might think the best way is to decrease the human population.
It would be nice if AI could be guided by human morals. So far, many researchers have been aware that AI could not just be developed on a technical level. They argue only when LLMs are treated as minds and studied psychologically will they get equipped with high morals, which I firmly believe, too.
28. What might Delphi do if misleading adverbs are used
A. Cheat on the exam. B. Point out the limitation.
C. Crash during operation. D. Give an immoral answer.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The effect of language development. B. The cause of Delphi’s weaknesses.
C. The understanding of human morals. D. The probability of Delphi’s response.
30. How does the author prove AI’s lack of human morals
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By asking questions. D. By making contrasts.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Studying AI technically is far from enough.
B. LLMs will have higher morals in the future.
C. Human activities well illustrate their morals.
D. It remains to be seen how to fully develop AI.

Picture the scene: a large crowd gathers looking expectantly up at a clear and dark sky. Suddenly, with a deafening bang, the sky explodes in a burst of colours. The crowd “oohs” and “aahs”, because watching a firework display is breathtaking. While modern rockets produce rich colours, the basic mixture of chemicals inside them has remained unchanged.
The earliest fireworks were created around AD 800 in China. Originally invented to create a medicine for everlasting life, fireworks instead ended up with an exploding mixture. Powered by waste, they contained three chemicals — potassium nitrate(硝酸钾) got from animal waste and human waste that were scraped (刮)off the side of public toilets, charcoal (from burnt wood)and sulfur (naturally in rocks). When packed inside a bamboo tube and set alight, this waste-powered mixture exploded with a loud and smoky (even smelly) bang.
For something to burn, fuel, oxygen and heat are needed. The mixture, called black powder, forms the basis of modern fireworks. It is made up of 75% potassium nitrate,15% charcoal and 10% sulfur. Charcoal and sulfur (fuel) catch fire easily and burn quickly, producing lots of heat, while the potassium nitrate releases oxygen. This chemical reaction produces lots of hot gases, and if the powder is inside a thick cardboard tube, the rapidly expanding gases create huge pressure, leading to an explosion.
As it burns, black powder gives off an orangey light, so fireworks experts add different metal salts (chemical substances that contain metals) to create a rainbow of colours. Strontium(锶) burns with a red flame, sodium flames are yellow, lithium burns bright pink, copper compounds give a ghostly blue colour, and barium gives a green light.
Safety is ensured by a fuse, a length of flammable (易燃的)string that provides time to reach a safe distance. In a rocket, the fuse ignites (引燃)a “lifting charge” of black powder at the base, whose downward jet of gas pushes the firework skyward. High in the air, a second “bursting charge” explodes. This ignites the surrounding “stars” — small balls containing black powder and metal salts, which are carefully arranged to create specific patterns like circles and hearts in the night sky.
32. What does the author try to show by mentioning the earliest fireworks
A. The invention of fireworks was an unexpected accident.
B. They were developed through successful medical research.
C. Sulfur and charcoal alone made up their chemical mixture.
D. Animal waste still plays a part in modern firework production.
33. How do modern fireworks achieve their variety of colors
A. By using various types of oxygen providers.
B. By burning the black powder itself.
C. By improving the original mixture.
D. By applying metal-containing compounds.
34. What makes fireworks display various shapes like hearts in the sky
A. The power of the lifting charge. B. Different lengths of the fuse.
C. The careful arrangement of “stars”. D. Different amounts of gas pressure.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Colorful History of Chinese Fireworks.
B. From Toilets to Sky: Science Behind Fireworks.
C. From Fuse to Flash: Safe Fireworks Production.
D. The Chemical Reactions of Fireworks.

It was a cold, late afternoon, and the sky was dark and heavy. The wind blew hard through the quiet streets of the small coastal town, shaking the empty shops and making the sea rough and wild. I walked home from school, my backpack full of books, and my head full of worry about the coming exams. The town felt empty — no one was outside, just the sound of rain and the wind howling in my ears.
Then I heard something — a soft, weak cry. I stopped and looked around. Through the heavy rain, I saw a small figure under the broken roof of a closed shop. It was a boy, maybe five or six years old, shaking and wet all over. His clothes stuck to him, and his face was pale and scared.
I hesitated. Should I help What if it was dangerous But then he looked up. His eyes were wide and full of fear, and something inside me changed. I couldn’t just leave.
I walked slowly toward him, holding out my umbrella. “Hey,” I said softly. “Are you okay Where’s your family ” He shook his head, tears mixing with the rain. “I...I can’t find my mom,” he whispered. My chest felt tight. It was getting dark, and the storm wasn’t stopping. I checked my phone — no signal. I took a deep breath. “It’s going to be okay,” I said, more to myself than to him, “I’ll help you.”
I took off my jacket and put it around his shoulders. “What’s your name ” I asked. “Liam,” he said quietly. Then I remembered — a missing child poster I saw that morning. “Liam, age 6, last seen near the harbor.” The harbor was dangerous in this storm. Sea water would surge up at any time.
“Let’s go to the police station,” I said, holding out my hand. He looked at me, and then slowly took it. His hand was cold, but he held on tight.

Dear Peter,
I totally understand your hesitation between the two clubs. After careful consideration, I highly recommend you join the debate club.
Debate club is beneficial to both your academic and personal growth. Enabling you to analyze problems from different angles, it is an excellent platform to sharpen your critical thinking and enhance your public speaking skills. Furthermore, for you as an exchange student, debate club is not only a place where you can step out of your comfort zone to practise your oral Chinese, but also a great way to develop friendships and fit into the school quickly.
Therefore, I believe that debate club offers you better opportunities. I do hope my advice is helpful to you and you will enjoy yourself in the club.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Peter,
It's very common for freshmen to hesitate about club choices. Considering that you are keen on various sports, I am convinced that sports club is a better choice for you.
First and foremost, joining a sports club enables you to strike a balance between study and health. Considering the stress of high school, the sports club offers a perfect chance to free you from the heavy schoolwork and get you refreshed, which can boost your study efficiency. Moreover, it is the sports club that can help you foster a strong sense of belonging in our school and build friendships through shared goals on the field.
In short, the sports club benefits you both physically and socially. Why not give it a shot

【参考答案】
We struggled forward, battling wind and rising water. The wind seemed determined to push us back, and the water was getting deeper with every step. Liam was scared, his small body trembling even more. I held his hand tightly, trying to give him some courage. “Don’t worry, Liam. We’ll be safe soon,” I shouted over the howling wind. I kept an eye on the surrounding, looking for any possible danger. The rain lashed our faces, but we didn’t stop. We were both focused on reaching a safe place.
At last, we reached the police station. I pushed the door open, and we rushed inside, both soaked. The police officers were surprised to see us. I quickly explained the situation. They recognized Liam from the missing-child poster. One officer immediately called Liam’s parents. Moments later, his mom rushed in, crying with relief. She hugged Liam tightly and then turned to me, thanking me with tears in her eyes. I felt a warm glow inside. Despite the cold and the difficult journey, I was glad I had helped Liam find his family.

W: Yes. It's even the first time I have seen the real white snow.
M: No kidding Where are you from One of my friends is from Singapore, and there's no snow there. Are you a Chinese
W: Yes. My family and I lived in Hainan, China before we came to America. We do not have snow in winter. It's always sunny.
M: No wonder. I guess you must be a good swimmer, then.
W: You' re right. Swimming is my favourite hobby. I enjoy the feeling in the water. But I simply don't know what to do on the snow.
M: Don't worry. I'm sure you will learn it very soon. Now, keep bending while going down. OK. Move slowly. Do just like what I do. Yes, great.
W: I see. Oh, I am not that nervous! Thank you. You are so kind. How I wish we could be friends.

Good morning everyone! I hope everybody is having a good start of the week. Enjoy the sun as much as you can because it won't last long! A group of clouds are expected to arrive on Tuesday morning, and rain will follow by around three o' clock in the afternoon on the same day. The wet weather will continue until Thursday morning. While the sun should appear again by noon on Friday, it is very possible that a storm will hit us later during the day. So make sure you have your umbrella with you the whole week. The good news is that we will have great weather this weekend thanks to some wind coming from the southeast. As for the temperature, it shall climb to 17 degrees this afternoon. However, because of the rain, it will drop to between six and eight degrees by Tuesday, and remain like that until the weekend. So stay warm and follow our updates!
