A magnitude (震级) 6.2 earthquake hit Jishishan County in Linxia, Gansu Province, just before midnight on December 18, 2023. It was the deadliest earthquake in the past nine years. Up to Dec. 22, it had taken 117 lives and injured 781 people in Gansu Province, said Xinhua. More than 3,000 rescuers had arrived at the quake-affected areas up to Dec. 19.
An earthquake may happen at any time. Although we can’t prevent an earthquake from happening, it’s best for us to know what to do, where to be safe and who to contact during the earthquake. The following information will help you.
Remember: Prepare your personal earthquake bag. Collect these items, like water, food, medicine, mobile phone, flashlight, personal washing things, blanket and money. Keep them somewhere near you.

Tang Hongbo: The first person to return to the “Tiangong”
On September 16, 2021, before the Shenzhou-12 crew (班组) left the core module (核心舱) of the space station, Tang Hongbo returned to the capsule (舱) and took a turn, secretly promised to himself, “I must come back in the near future”.
Just 2 years and 1 month later, Tang Hongbo’s wish came true—on October 25, 2023, Tang Hongbo appeared at Wen Tian Hall for the second time to meet with Chinese and foreign media reporters.
The difference is that this time he was the leader of the Shenzhou-17 crew to space. From the first manned flight of the space station stage to the second manned flight in the new stage of space station application and development, Tang Hongbo became the first astronaut to return to the “Tiangong” and the Chinese astronaut with the shortest interval (间隔) between two missions so far.
“At this moment, my mood is calm and firm. Always being ready to go to space for the motherland is my dream and responsibility when I joined the astronaut team. It has never changed, and I have never been lazy for a second.” Tang Hongbo said.
In October 1975, Tang Hongbo was born in Xiangtan, Hunan, a place where heroes are born. Growing up with listening to the stories about these great men like Mao Zedong, Peng Dehuai, Tang Hongbo also planted a heroic dream in his heart early.
