For more than 30 years, Zhu Yanjun, the 50-year-old man from a small village in Gansu Province, had been a migrant worker (农民工) in different cities like many other workers from China; but what made him different was his strong passion (热情) for reading poems and books.
In early February, 2023, Zhu became well known when he got the second place in the annual (全年的) Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by CCTV.
Zhu’s passion for reading came from his Chinese language teacher in middle school who has published many articles in magazines.
“I also wanted to publish stories, so I started to read and borrow books from relatives and classmates,” he said. Born in a village in Jingning County, Gansu Province, Zhu had never left his hometown from a young age. After graduating from middle school, he became a migrant worker. Zhu worked in more than 10 cities, yet no matter where he was, he went to local bookstores and took a notebook with him in order to write down paragraphs from the books and recite them. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can recite more than 1,000 of them.
“There is an old Chinese saying: Reading 10,000 books is not as good as traveling 10,000 miles,” said Zhu. “However, for me, although I have been to many different cities, it is not for travel but to make a living. So I improve myself by reading books and poems.”
Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he never says anything about hard work. “Whenever I face any difficulties, I think of a Chairman Mao’s quotation—Nothing in the world is difficult for the one who sets his mind to it,” he told China Daily.

In many people’s eyes, plants are quiet and inactive. They can’t talk. They can’t walk. And they can’t think like us.
Or can they A new TV show, The Green Planet, gives us a new look at plants. It uncovers the wonderful way that plants behave.
Plants compete against each other to live. Each plant has its own ways of protecting itself. In the rainforests, different kinds of plants race for sunlight. The forest floor is described as a “war field” in the show as only two percent of the sunlight gets through it. Some plants spread their big leaves to reach light. But they are caught up in a vine (藤本植物) that tries to get a ride. Finally, they are both overtaken (超过) by a fast-growing tree. As the tree has smooth hairs on its leaves, the vine can’t get a hold on it. Similarly, some trees try to protect themselves in other ways.
Interestingly, plants also support one another in many ways. In deserts, the roots of Euphrates poplar(胡杨) are connected. If a tree finds water, it will share it with others through the roots. Studies also show that plants use fungus(真菌) as a way to talk to each other. It’s kind of like how Wi-Fi works. If a tomato plant gets a leaf disease, it can tell nearby plants about it. How amazing the plants are!
The TV show not only makes us marvel at the plant world but pushes us to understand that plants are important. “Plants are the basis of all life, including ourselves. We depend on them for every mouth of food that we eat and every breath that we breathe, ” said David Attenborough, host of the show. It’s time to look after wild plants just as carefully as our houseplants.

Should teenagers be allowed to use the phone as much as they want 73.
Very often, we can see young people sit and look at the screen of a mobile phone. But when we think of the question “how much time do they actually spend on media (传播媒介) ”. The answer is surprising. It’s about four to five hours every day using media.
Nowadays young people seem to have become crazy multitaskers (多任务处理者). 74. Some watch TV, some text (发短信) and some others listen to music. But what do young people think of this
Researchers found that two thirds of them believed watching TV or sending messages had no influence on their schoolwork. 75. However, researchers have given a different answer — “media multitaskers” did worse in tests.
Some researchers studied more than 400 students. 76. On the other hand, students without the habit of texting during a lesson took down a lot more notes and got better grades. Similar researches also showed that students texting when doing schoolwork did worse in the tests.
Teenagers’ health can be influenced, too. 77. They may be woken up by messages. Even the light from the screen could influence their sleep. As a result, they go to bed later, get fewer hours of sleep each week, and become tired more easily during the daytime.
