When the local nonprofit Blind Industries & Services of Maryland, or BISM, reached out to Johns Hopkins University last year, they asked for one thing: a printer that adds braille (盲文) writing to beer labels.
A group of engineering students delivered it. Because BISM is the state’s largest employer of blind and low-visioned workers, the students wanted to design an open hardware product that is easy to operate, unlike other printers that enclose their working components behind hard casing.
Starting in September, the thoughtfully designed and newly built machine is capable of punching (打孔) braille text into plastic beer labels as well as card stock, glossy mailers, and other materials that commercial braille-friendly printers are presently unable to accommodate.
“Having open hardware that allows people to touch all the components was important,” said Catherine Pollard, a project team member. “We really took into consideration who would be operating the machine and how they were going to use it. For this to be a functional product, the user experience is paramount.”
The students also developed easy-to update software that allows their printer to communicate with the braille word processor and Photoshop design software that the nonprofit uses in its office.
“We couldn’t have made it without BISM as a project sponsor. They gave us user feedback (反馈) from the people who are most interested in the machine and worked closely with us every step of the way,” said another team member Gabriella Hu.
The students have already printed 400 labels for Blind Spot, a beer invented by Baltimore’s own Checkerspot Brewery Company in cooperation with BISM as part of an annual fundraiser for those with vision loss. The new printer will save BISM employees from having to use a manual press to punch braille text into more than 1,000 labels for next year’s festivities.
24. How is the new printer different from other printers
A. It has open hardware. B. It is designed by the blind.
C. Its material is recyclable. D. Its components are lighter.
25. What does the underlined word “paramount” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Unforgettable. B. Exciting. C. Visible. D. Crucial.
26. How did Gabriella Hu feel about BISM
A. Inspired. B. Calm. C. Grateful. D. Sympathetic.
27. What can be learned from the text
A. More people with vision loss are recovering.
B. The new printer will benefit blind employees.
C. BISM employees urgently need strict training.
D. The students’ invention will generate huge profits.

Zhang Peidong, a professor from the Ocean University of China, has been diving for 16 years, exploring the underwater “grasslands” covered with seagrass. These seagrass beds are essential habitats for sea life. However, human activities and changes in the environment have caused a big drop in seagrass beds around the world. In 2008, Zhang and his colleague Li Wentao found a worrying situation in Rongcheng Bay, a key area for seagrass beds in China. The number of overwintering swans had dropped sharply because of the loss of seagrass, a main food source.
Faced with this ecological crisis, Zhang and Li changed their research focus from aquaculture (水产养殖) to seagrass bed restoration, an area that had received little attention at the time. Their efforts were supported by a Weihai-based company, which provided free workshops, office space, housing, and workers for the research team. The company’s general manager noted that many employees, being children of fishermen, were eager to contribute to the restoration efforts.
After years of hard work, the research team developed a way to grow eelgrass seedlings artificially. By understanding the growth patterns and the best seed collection times, they managed to reduce the growing period from nearly three months to just 10 days. The team also created several sets of equipment with independent intellectual property rights to improve planting efficiency.
Over the past 16 years, the research team has taken part in more than 10 seagrass bed restoration projects in China, covering over 1,333 hectares in the Yellow and Bohai Seas. Their efforts have led to the recovery of more than 40% of the seagrass beds in Swan Lake, attracting more swans to the area. The restoration technology has also been used in other provinces, such as Hebei and Liaoning, significantly improving local water quality and biodiversity.
The team’s commitment to seagrass bed restoration has brought new life to underwater ecosystems and set a positive example for ecological conservation efforts globally. Their work highlights the importance of protecting marine habitats and the potential for joint efforts between academia and industry to address environmental challenges.
28. What led to the decline of the overwintering swans
A. Loss of food sources like seagrass.
B. habitat loss due to human activities.
C. Increased hunting and lead poisoning.
D. Climate change and warmer winters.
29. How did the team help restore the underwater grassland
A. By protecting existing seagrass beds.
B. By creating new equipment for planting.
C. By shortening the growth period of eelgrass.
D. By developing artificial cultivation technology.
30. Why are the statistics used in Paragraph 4
A. To show the effectiveness of the restoration efforts.
B. To stress the importance of protecting seagrass beds.
C. To highlight the challenges faced by the researchers.
D. To compare the success of different restoration projects.
31. What does the last paragraph imply
A Seagrass restoration is the only solution.
B. The team’s efforts are globally recognized.
C. Cooperation aids environmental protection.
D. Underwater ecosystem remains vital to humans.

Philosophers have a bad reputation for expressing themselves in a dry and boring way. The ideals for most philosophical writing are precision, clarity, and the sort of conceptual analysis that leaves no hair un-split.
There is nothing wrong with clarity, precision, and the like-but this isn’t the only way to do philosophy. Outside academic journals, abstract philosophical ideas are often expressed through literature, cinema, and song. There’s nothing that grabs attention like a good story, and there are some great philosophical stories that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader to sleep.
One of the great things about this is that, unlike formal philosophy, which tries to be very clear, stories don’t wear their meanings on their sleeve— they require interpretation, and often express conflicting ideas for the reader to wrestle with.
Consider what philosophers call the metaphysics (形而上学) of race—an area of philosophy that explores the question of whether or not race is real. There are three main positions that you can take on these questions. You might think that a person’s race is written in their genes (a position known as “biological realism”). Or you might think of race as socially real, like days of the week or currencies (“social constructionism”). Finally, you might think that races are unreal— that they’re more like leprechauns (一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays or dollars (“anti-realism”).
A great example of a story taking on race is George S. Schuyler’s novel Black No More. In the book, a Black scientist named Crookman invents a procedure that makes Black people visually indistinguishable from Whites. Thousands of African Americans flock to Crookman’s Black No More clinics and pay him their hard-earned cash to undergo the procedure. White racists can no longer distinguish those people who are “really” White from those who merely appear to be White. In a final episode, Crookman discovers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade of pale than those who were born that way, which kicks off a trend of sunbathing to darken one’s skin— darkening it so as to look more White.
Philosophically rich stories like this bring more technical works to life. They are stories to think with.
32. What is the impression formal philosophy leaves on people according to Paragraph 1
A. Dull. B. Engaging.
C. Thought-provoking. D. Depressing.
33. Which is the distinction of philosophical stories
A. They give precise conceptual analysis.
B. They interpret ideas formally and clearly.
C. They seldom express conflicting ideas.
D. They stimulate interest and critical thinking.
34. Which category might “Black No More” in Paragraph 5 fall into
A. Racial issues caused by skin colors.
B. A society view on race and self-image.
C. Black people accepted by the white society.
D. The origin of sunbathing among white people.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Stories Made Easy B. Positions in Philosophy
C. Stories to Think with D. Nature of Philosophical Writing

I love thinking about teams. I love thinking about how to create an environment that will make a group of people want to be on the team. I love considering the best ways to build a great team.
Here is one of my favorite team concepts: the sign of a great team is not the absence of conflict. Rather, the sign of a great team is the ability to resolve conflict. ____36____ But our ability to consistently resolve that conflict impacts the kind of team we have more than any other variable. If we learn how to resolve the conflict, the team will be together for very long.
Now, the “how” is the hardest part of conflict resolution. ____37____ But in my experience, the key aspect of consistent conflict resolution comes down to listening and respect. When we listen to each other and respect the opposing perspective (视角), we can have reasonable dialogue. ____38____
That we listen to and respect other perspectives does not mean we always have to agree. ____39____ That's fine. But simple listening skills and demonstrations of respect are at the heart of consistent and reasonable conflict resolution.
Great teams are not on the same page all the time. ____40____ So when you are trying to build a great team or when you think you have one and want to keep it great, spend some time thinking about how you will handle those difficult moments when the team is not on the same page.
A. We can still agree to disagree.
B. But great teams know how to get there.
C. The best relationships take time and effort.
D. It is always complex and often requires multiple steps.
E. Then we are likely to be on our way to eventual resolution.
F. People on a team often work together towards a common goal.
G. That is because even the best teams unavoidable have conflict.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was always afraid of water. This fear could not be explained, but I knew that the moment I stepped near any body of water, my legs would turn to jelly (果冻). I would imagine myself drowning in the water and thrashing around (扑腾) helplessly. That was why I had never gone into a swimming pool until swimming became a school requirement. My school wanted all pupils to pass a swimming test, and if they could not, then they would have to attend weekly swimming lessons in school, which made me tremble.
Thus, my parents signed me up for swimming lessons at the pool near my house. With great unwillingness, I attended those weekly lessons, and each one was great suffering for me. I was naturally clumsy, and my fear of water did not help at all. Every lesson, I would be spending my time thrashing about in the water, while my classmates would be swimming countless laps effortlessly and even turning over like dolphins in the water. How was I going to pass the test at this rate
In my swimming class, there was an exceptionally athletic girl. Tall and muscular, her name was Kathy. She was the best swimmer in our class and always looked at me with contempt (鄙视), especially when I struggled hopelessly in the water.
Once, after a particularly long and hard swimming lesson, I spotted Kathy swimming gracefully in the pool. Gathering my courage, I asked gently, “Kathy, can you teach me to swim ” She stared at me coldly. It was as if I stood at the edge of an endless ocean of inadequacy, my fears appearing like dark storm clouds threatening to drown me. Yet, in that moment, a glimmer of hope flashed within me a desperate longing for guidance and acceptance. Would Kathy’s icy exterior (外) melt under the warmth of empathy, or would I remain forever thrashing in the sea of my own fears

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence.

【原文】M: Good afternoon, everyone. I’m your old friend Henry Brown. It’s Nature Time again. In today’s program, I’d like to tell you about a rescued young dolphin. The dolphin was just 5 days old when she was found far from water on the muddy ground in a nature reserve. She became stuck there. A man who was watching birds spotted the baby dolphin surrounded by cattle in mud through his telescope. He immediately called the nature reserve that helped the little dolphin to safety. Once she was rescued, she was sent straight to the hospital, where animal doctors took care of her. The baby dolphin couldn’t breathe normally, so the animal doctors had to deal with it first. Now she’s doing well and gaining weight. But she isn’t ready to be returned to the sea yet. She needs to weigh between 30 and 40 kilograms. She also needs to be able to feed in the water by herself before she can be set free. It is not known exactly how she got so far from the sea. Luckily, she is getting better. Doctors named her “Lucky”. Well, thanks for listening to our program. See you next week.

How to Avoid Being Replaced by AI
Advancing at a rapid pace, AI is transforming the world by performing a wide range of tasks, which causes concerns among those who fear potential job displacement.
As students, we should focus on creativity and imagination. Indeed, AI excels in logical tasks, yet it often falls short in critical thinking. Developing soft skills such as empathy and leadership is crucial, which set us apart from AI and make us indispensable in the workforce. Essentially, we should embrace lifelong learning, continuously updating our knowledge and skills to adapt to the changes.
While AI presents challenges, proactive steps can be taken to ensure that we will thrive, not just survive, in the age of AI.

To my surprise, she nodded after a few moments of silence. Her cold stare softened slightly, and she said, “Alright, I’ll help you. But you have to promise to work hard.” From that day on, Kathy became my unofficial coach. “Thrashing drowns you,” she said flatly. She demonstrated smooth strokes. “Breathe in before diving, out underwater.” For weeks, Kathy drilled me daily with kickboards, blowing bubbles until I was dizzy and floating as her hands steadied my back.
