Honolulu, Hawaii, recently passed a law making it unlawful to look down at a phone while crossing the street. It is the first big US city with a law like this. Do you think more places should pass such a law Following are some replies posted by netizens.
As humans, we can make our own decision. I’m not saying it’s safe, but we don’t need the government to babysit us like our parents. After all, we are grown-ups. If we want to learn to make good decisions, the government needs to stop telling us what to do. —Andrew from Oregon
This law makes sense. If all the states pass such a law, some people might not like it. But is there really a way to please everyone This would not be for fun. It would be for the safety of all Americans. —Grace from Alaska
People do many things that may hurt themselves but are not against the law, such as riding bikes, driving cars, and swimming. The list goes on and on. People might get hurt from looking at phones while walking if they’re not paying attention. Still, I believe people should have the freedom to choose. —Alice from Pennsylvania
What matters more — your phone or your safety If you’re staring at your screen while walking, you might miss a car coming or fail to see the traffic light turn red. Using your phone on the road can be unsafe. That’s why more cities should stop people looking at phones when crossing the street! —Sally from Seoul
21.Who may support newly passed the law
A.Andrew and Grace. B.Alice and Sally.
C.Andrew and Alice. D.Grace and Sally.
22.Which serves as a reason against the law

C.The government can’t act as parents. D.Adults needn’t be concerned about safety.

A.An online post. B.A research report.
C.A travel guide. D.A marketing survey.

At 102 years old, American doctor Howard Tucker holds a Guinness World Record as the oldest practicing doctor. Although he stopped seeing patients at 100, his life remains full of purpose, showing that passion (热情) is the best medicine against aging.
Dr. Tucker believes “retirement (退休) is the enemy of a long life.” He thinks having a reason to wake up each morning is important. Even after the hospital where he worked closed in 2022, he hasn’t completely ruled out returning to medical work. Today, he teaches future doctors and works on medico-legal cases, a job made possible by a law degree he earned at 67.
For Dr. Tucker, a long life isn’t just about good genes (基因) from his parents, who lived to 84 and 96, but more of his healthy lifestyle including following a simple diet, often missing lunch to have a clear head, exercising daily, walking at least four kilometers, and staying away from smoking while drinking a little alcohol. Dr. Tucker also says it’s important to keep the brain active. “If you retire from work, you should at least do something as a hobby,” he told Today. “You need something interesting for the brain daily.” Science backs him up. Research shows that ongoing learning, social connections, and a sense of purpose are all helpful for a healthy and long life.
Experiencing a fall in his late 80s that ended his skiing days with a broken neck, Tucker hasn’t lost his passion for life, always finding new ways to stay active instead. As he approaches his 103rd birthday, Dr. Tucker isn’t worried about death but focuses on living fully. For a man who has spent his life helping treat others, Dr. Howard Tucker’s greatest lesson is how to truly live.
24.How did Dr. Tucker fight against “the enemy of a long life”
A.He earned a law degree at 67. B.He worked as a medical instructor.

A.A healthy way of daily life. B.A clear and scientific mind.

26.What happened to Dr. Tucker in his late 80s
A.He needed a passion for life. B.He started to learn how to ski.
C.He retired from medical practice. D.He remained active after an accident.

A.Strict and curious. B.Careful and adventurous.
C.Positive and purposeful. D.Grateful and responsible.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said last week that artificial intelligence could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years, making the unemployment rate as high as 20%. Is that true
Humans have experienced several technological disruptions (扰乱) before, and now we have adapted to meet them. AI won’t be any different. There was a time when the elevators in hotels and office buildings were staffed by human operators. Then in the 1930s, elevator companies began installing “robot elevators” with automatic controls, and eventually elevator operators completely disappeared, with no tide of unemployment.
Some people see AI as a job killer. However, research shows that broad adoption of AI could boost the country’s productivity growth by 1.5% per year, resulting in higher salaries, higher profits and more savings. Those people do not realize that the savings from increased productivity is recycled back into the economy. This creates new demand and in turn creates more jobs. Some are entirely new, such as “content creator assistant,” and others are existing jobs that are higher in demand because people have more money to spend — for example, personal trainers.
Further, there is a great deal of work that only humans can do. Self-driving school buses will still need an adult to watch the kids. As for police, AI robots won’t be arresting criminals anytime soon. It’s a similar story for CEOs, fashion models and flight attendants. Most occupations involve working with other people, with things or with ideas that are too complex for AI to handle alone.
Let’s imagine that Mr. Amodei’s forecast turns out to be accurate. Entry-level white-collar jobs account for less than 15% of the U. S. labor force. Wiping out half of them in five years would mean roughly 2.6 million jobs lost per year. That sounds like a lot, but the fact is that about 20 million U. S. workers are laid off every year. In other words, the supposed AI job loss, even if it occurred, would be the equivalent of only about six weeks of normal labor-market disturbance.
28.Why is “elevator operators” mentioned
A.To justify a job. B.To illustrate a point.
C.To introduce a topic. D.To make a prediction.
29.What do people viewing AI as a job killer fail to understand
A.Jobs lost will be lost forever. B.Some jobs will never disappear.
C.Application of AI creates jobs. D.Jobs involving AI are in demand.
30.What does the last paragraph focus on
A.What effects AI has on the U. S. labor-market. B.What makes Mr. Amodei make the prediction.
C.Why Mr. Amodei’s forecast makes little sense. D.Why we should take AI development seriously.
31.What does the author mainly argue for
A.It’s time to get ready for AI’s arrival. B.Humans have adapted to AI advances.
C.Some jobs are not suitable for AI to do. D.AI is not responsible for unemployment.
D
Have you ever felt full after a meal but still wanted dessert (甜点) Or taken a cookie just because it was there Many of us find it hard to refuse sugar. In fact, a study showed that 94% of lab rats preferred sweetened water to cocaine (可卡因). While sugar is not as harmful, it influences our brain in a similar way, bringing us pleasure and making us want more.
It’s natural for our bodies to ask for sugar. However, unlike fruits and vegetables, some foods have high amounts of sugar added to them. According to Dr. Vera Tarman, this can make eating sugar addictive— similar to how coca leaves were safe, but cocaine was dangerous. “Signs include thinking about sweets all the time, eating even when full.” Dr. Tarman said, “many people feel a meal isn’t complete without dessert— it becomes a habit.”
Too much sugar can harm your health, leading to heart problems, headaches, and low energy. What’s worse, it can keep your blood sugar high, making you feel tired and unwell. To break the habit, Dr. Tarman suggests stopping sugar completely rather than slowly cutting down on it. The first five days may be difficult— you might feel easily annoyed or have trouble sleeping. But by the second week, these feelings weaken. By the third week, you won’t even miss sugar.
“Start family-wide dietary improvements by eliminating sugary food intake, developing healthier eating habits for all members. After a meal, do something else, like drinking tea or taking a walk, to avoid reaching for sweets.” said Dr. Tarman. “Keep telling yourself why you’re quitting— maybe to build energy or lose weight, and ask a friend to support you.”
Quitting sugar may seem impossible at first, but after a few weeks, your taste will change. An apple will taste sweeter, and you’ll enjoy the freedom from sugar addiction.
32.According to Dr. Tarman, what makes people addicted to sugar
A.Habit of dessert eating. B.Added sugar in a diet.
C.Natural need of bodies. D.Similarity to coca leaves.
33.What does Dr. Tarman suggest doing to avoid sugar addiction
A.Giving up sugar for good. B.Stopping eating sugar gradually.
C.Cutting down on sugar for two weeks. D.Weakening sugar influence slowly.
34.Which may replace the underlined word “eliminating” in paragraph 4
A.Making up. B.Applying for. C.Cutting out. D.Focusing on.
35.What positive change can you expect after quitting sugar
A.You can enjoy sweet foods freely. B.Apples will not taste sweet to you.
C.You are sure to have a sweet tooth. D.A better sense of taste may come along.
Many of us have gotten into the habit of listening to podcasts, audiobooks and other online content at increased playback speeds. 36 One survey of students in California, for example, showed that 89% changed the playback speed of online lectures, while there are plenty of articles about how common speedy viewing has become.
It is easy to think of some advantages to watching things more quickly. It can let you enjoy more content in the same time, or go through the same piece of content several times to get the most out of it. 37 It might free up time for consolidating (巩固) knowledge or doing practice tests. Watching quickly is also a good way of making sure you focus on what you’re up to.
38 It turns out that there are one or two of those as well. Researchers point out that processing (处理) speech information in humans includes three steps of memory: receiving the information, storing it, and later understanding it. During the process, the brain needs time to collect the continuous speech, deal with words in real time and then understand their meanings.
People generally speak at a speed of about 150 words per minute, though doubling the speed to 300 or even tripling it to 450 words is still understandable. 39 At higher speaking speed, listeners may get the immediate meaning but store less information over time.
Incoming information is stored for a certain time in our memory, waiting to be reorganized and turned into a form that is ready for the long-term memory. Because memory space is limited, if too much information arrives too quickly it can be hard to deal with. 40
A.But what about the disadvantages
B.This leads to brain overload and loss of information.
C.For younger people, it might even be the common case.
D.This could be especially useful in an educational background.
E.Speeding up may save time, but it can weaken deep understanding.
F.The question is more about the quality of the memories that we form.
G.Fast listening might improve social communication among young people.

Last Saturday I received a call from my close friend, Peter. He asked me to help with his group who provided musical performances at the local hospitals. At first I was unwilling to go because of my unfinished homework, but I was finally persuaded into helping out this one time, which turned out to be an unforgettable and fruitful experience.
That evening, I was picked up by Peter and went to a local hospital with him, taking my guitar and hoping I could sing some solo songs with his musical group.
An extremely large hospital came into our sight. When guided into the hall, we were shocked to find so many patients and staff there. What we saw next aroused our sympathy. Some patients were in wheelchairs or with their arms in bandages, while others were with their drips attached. Some faces were rather pale; some wore worried expressions; some walked as fast as they could. Maybe their days seemed to be dull during the period of their treatment, so our coming brought some color into their lives. Seeing their happy faces, I thought it was worthwhile to join Peter's group.
Among the audience, I spotted one particular young girl aged about 16, who was wearing a head scarf and appeared to be more delighted than the others. When we started our performance, excitement filled the hall. Peter mentioned to me that the young girl I had noticed earlier was singing along with all our songs quietly to herself. At a break, out of curiosity, I asked one of the nurses about the girl. She said that the girl suffered serious burns and was under treatment and that she was a bit down these days, but our performance had lifted her spirits. Our songs moved all the people present. They all cheered for us, including the young girl and we were inspired. Facing these lovely people, we really wanted to do more.
注意:1、续写词数应为150左右;
We asked the girl if she would like to sing with us.

根据Grace的回复“This law makes sense.(这项法律有道理)”以及“It would be for the safety of all Americans.(这是为了所有美国人的安全)”和Sally的回复“Using your phone on the road can be unsafe. That’s why more cities should stop people looking at phones when crossing the street!
根据Andrew的回复“I’m not saying it’s safe, but we don’t need the government to babysit us like our parents.(我并不是说这绝对安全,但我们也不需要政府像父母那样对我们进行监管照顾)”和Alice的回复“Still, I believe people should have the freedom to choose.(不过,我仍然认为人们应该有选择的自由)”可知,反对者的核心理由是政府不应过度干预,成年人应有自主决策权。
根据第一段第一句“Honolulu, Hawaii, recently passed a law making it unlawful to look down at a phone while crossing the street. 故选A项。
Tucker believes “retirement (退休) is the enemy of a long life.” He thinks having a reason to wake up each morning is important. Even after the hospital where he worked closed in 2022, he hasn’t completely ruled out returning to medical work. Today, he teaches future doctors and works on medico-legal cases. a job made possible by a law degree he earned at 67.(塔克博士认为“退休会缩短人的寿命”。
根据第三段“For Dr. Tucker, a long life isn’t just about good genes (基因) from his parents, who lived to 84 and 96, but more of his healthy lifestyle including following a simple diet, often missing lunch to have a clear head, exercising daily, walking at least four kilometers, and staying away from smoking while drinking a little alcohol.(对于塔克医生来说,长寿不仅仅得益于他父母良好的基因(他父母分别活到了84岁和96岁),还在于他保持的健康生活方式,比如遵循简单的饮食习惯、经常不吃午餐以便头脑清醒、每天锻炼、每天至少步行四公里,以及远离吸烟同时适量饮酒)”可知,在塔克医生漫长的一生中,健康的日常生活方式起到了更大的作用。故选A。
根据最后一段“Experiencing a fall in his late 80s that ended his skiing days with a broken neck, Tucker hasn’t lost his passion for life, always finding new ways to stay active instead.(塔克在80多岁时遭遇了一次摔倒,导致颈部骨折,结束了他滑雪的生涯。
Tucker believes “retirement (退休) is the enemy of a long life.” He thinks having a reason to wake up each morning is important. Even after the hospital where he worked closed in 2022, he hasn’t completely ruled out returning to medical work. Today, he teaches future doctors and works on medico-legal cases, a job made possible by a law degree he earned at 67.(塔克博士认为“退休会缩短人的寿命”。 这一切都得益于他在67岁时获得的法学学位)”以及最后一段“Experiencing a fall in his late 80s that ended his skiing days with a broken neck, Tucker hasn’t lost his passion for life, always finding new ways to stay active instead.(塔克在80多岁时遭遇了一次摔倒,导致颈部骨折,结束了他滑雪的生涯。
根据第二段“Humans have experienced several technological disruptions (扰乱) before, and now we have adapted to meet them. AI won’t be any different. There was a time when the elevators in hotels and office buildings were staffed by human operators. Then in the 1930s, elevator companies began installing “robot elevators” with automatic controls, and eventually elevator operators completely disappeared, with no tide of unemployment.(人类此前经历过多次技术变革,如今我们也已适应并应对了这些变革。
根据第三段“Those people do not realize that the savings from increased productivity is recycled back into the economy. This creates new demand and in turn creates more jobs.(这些人没有意识到,由于生产效率的提高所节省下来的资金会重新投入经济之中。
根据最后一段“Let’s imagine that Mr. In other words, the supposed AI job loss, even if it occurred, would be the equivalent of only about six weeks of normal labor-market disturbance.(假设阿莫迪先生的预测是准确的。
通读全文,根据第二段中“Humans have experienced several technological disruptions (扰乱) before, and now we have adapted to meet them. 、第三段中“Some people see AI as a job killer. However, research shows that broad adoption of AI could boost the country’s productivity growth by 1.5% per year, resulting in higher salaries, higher profits and more savings. 以及第四段中“Further, there is a great deal of work that only humans can do.
根据文章第二段“However, unlike fruits and vegetables, some foods have high amounts of sugar added to them. According to Dr. Vera Tarman, this can make eating sugar addictive— similar to how coca leaves were safe, but cocaine was dangerous.(然而,不同于水果和蔬菜,有些食物中添加了大量糖分。
根据文章第三段“To break the habit, Dr. Tarman suggests stopping sugar completely rather than slowly cutting down on it.(要打破这个习惯,Tarman博士建议彻底戒糖,而不是慢慢减少摄入量)”可知,Tarman博士建议彻底戒糖来避免糖瘾。故选A。
根据划线单词所在句““Start family-wide dietary improvements by eliminating sugary food intake, developing healthier eating habits for all members. After a meal, do something else, like drinking tea or taking a walk, to avoid reaching for sweets.” said Dr. Tarman.(“全家一起改善饮食,eliminating含糖食物,为所有家庭成员培养更健康的饮食习惯。
根据文章最后一段“Quitting sugar may seem impossible at first, but after a few weeks, your taste will change. An apple will taste sweeter, and you’ll enjoy the freedom from sugar addiction.(一开始,戒糖似乎是不可能的事,但几周后,你的味觉会发生改变。
36.根据上文“Many of us have gotten into the habit of listening to podcasts, audiobooks and other online content at increased playback speeds. 以及后文“One survey of students in California, for example, showed that 89% changed the playback speed of online lectures, while there are plenty of articles about how common speedy viewing has become. 选项C(对年轻人来说,这甚至可能是常态。)
37.根据上文“It is easy to think of some advantages to watching things more quickly. It can let you enjoy more content in the same time, or go through the same piece of content several times to get the most out of it. 以及后文“It might free up time for consolidating (巩固) knowledge or doing practice tests. Watching quickly is also a good way of making sure you focus on what you’re up to. 选项D(这在教育背景下可能特别有用。)
38.根据后文“It turns out that there are one or two of those as well. Researchers point out that processing (处理) speech information in humans includes three steps of memory: receiving the information, storing it, and later understanding it. During the process, the brain needs time to collect the continuous speech, deal with words in real time and then understand their meanings. 选项A(但缺点呢?) 故选A。
39.根据上文“People generally speak at a speed of about 150 words per minute, though doubling the speed to 300 or even tripling it to 450 words is still understandable. 以及后文“At higher speaking speed, listeners may get the immediate meaning but store less information over time .(在语速较快的情况下,听众可能会较快理解其意思,但随着时间的推移,他们所记住的信息会相对较少。)” 选项 F(问题更多在于我们形成的记忆质量。)
40.根据上文“Incoming information is stored for a certain time in our memory, waiting to be reorganized and turned into a form that is ready for the long-term memory. Because memory space is limited, if too much information arrives too quickly it can be hard to deal with. 选项B(这会导致大脑过载和信息丢失。)

46.例文
Dear Adam,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful letter. It’s true that we’re currently making the important decision about which subjects to focus on.
This choice was not an easy one for me. While I’ve always enjoyed literature and history for their imaginative depth, I also recognize the importance of science subjects like physics and maths. What eventually guided my decision was my long-term goal of becoming an engineer. After much reflection, I feel motivated and ready for the challenge.
I’d love to know how subject choices are handled in your country. Looking forward to your reply.
Best regards,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1:
We asked the girl if she would like to sing with us. At first, she refused our suggestion without the slightest hesitation, saying she had never sung in front of audience before. Additionally, she was afraid of messing it up. However, after our constant encouragement and persuasion, she finally made up her mind to give it a shot as part of our group. Surprisingly, her soft and melodious voice made her performance a great success. All the audience burst into deafening applause and cheers which lasted for several minutes at the end of her performance.
Paragraph 2:
After her performance, I saw a change in the girl’s eyes. They seemed much brighter than when we had first met her just a couple of hours ago. She appeared to have gained a lot of confidence from this experience. She told me we had made her day. A bright smile spread across the little girl’s face. I was pleased that I neither missed the opportunity to help others nor just thought of myself and my own needs. Not only stepping out did help those in need, but also it allow me to taste the sweetness of helping others.
