Xi’an guyue is a type of traditional music that is played in Xi’ an, Shaanxi Province. It was included in the UNESCO (联合国教科文组织) intangible heritage list in 2009.
Xi’an guyue started with Yan music (燕乐) in the Tang Dynasty and later was popular among the folks. This ancient art form has a history of about 1, 400 years. The Chinese characters鼓 ( “gu” ) , meaning drum, and 乐 ( “yue” ) , meaning music, together formed Xi’an guyue. It can be divided into two main styles—“sitting music” is played indoors and “walking music” is played in open fields. A music band usually has more than 10 musicians. Traditional instruments such as the pipa and daqin were used in ancient times, and later the sheng and drum were used as the main instruments.
As time went by, the folk cultural environment in which the original Xi’an guyue lived is dying out. One of the reasons is that it takes at least 90 minutes to perform a full set of “sitting music” so it is difficult for people to have the patience to listen. We need to take action to pass it down immediately.
Experts have worked to develop the art form by combining (融合) Datang music and dance with Xi’an guyue to attract young people. In the countryside, people still invite guyue bands to important events.
