Except Machu Picchu, the destinations below show a side of Peru that most visitors won’t miss — from breathtaking cities and villages to amazing lakes and forests.
Arequipa
Arequipa is Peru’s second-largest city, surrounded by five volcanoes (火山), with El Misti towering above the skyline. The city is famous for its white buildings made of sillar, a volcanic stone, which gives it the title “White City”. The bright sunlight makes the city shine, and Arequipa is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Yanque
Reaching the Andean town of Yanque requires a long journey along the Pan-American Highway, which winds its way into the mountains and climbs route (路径). The route passes through small villages and Inca fields. Yanque is still a peaceful town, with a quiet square and a handful of shops. National Geographic explorer Robert Shippee once called it a “half forgotten town in the world”, and the description still rings true today.
Ayaviri
In the high plains near Ayaviri, Tinajani Canyon is a natural wonder. The canyon, over 75,000 years old, is home to huge red sandstone formations. The canyon sits at 13,123 feet above sea level and is home to rare plants like Puya rainmondii, the largest bromeliad in the world, which flowers only once every hundred years.
Lake Titicaca
Lake Titicaca, covering across 3,204 square miles, lies not far from Puno City. This beautiful lake is surrounded by snow-capped towering mountains. It is home to the Uros floating (漂浮的) islands, more than 130 man-made platforms made totally of water plants from the lake. Visit Uros families that have lived on these islands for centuries, and watch them build their homes, boats, and daily tools.
1. Which of the following is known as “White City”
A. Arequipa. B. Yanque. C. Ayaviri. D. Puno City.
2. What does the author probably suggest visitors do in Yanque
A. Buy a ring at a small shop. B. Experience its peaceful feel.
C. Be a guest in a local family. D. Admire towering volcanoes.
3. What is special about the Uros floating islands in Lake Titicaca
A. They are home to wildlife. B. They are man-made.
C. They are snow-capped. D. They are crowded in summer.

Matt Holland, a sailing instructor in Guernsey, has taken on an enhanced version (增强版) of the 30 Bays (海湾) in 30 Days challenge, by completing the event within 24 hours. He took on the feat (英勇事迹) which has broken his fund-raising (资金募集) target for Les Bourgs Hospice, a hospital for people who are dying.
Matt Holland’s mum, Sam Holland, was cared for by the team at Les Bourgs Hospice before her death earlier this year. “I want to do something to give back to the Les Bourgs Hospice. It holds a place close to my heart because of the role they held in caring for my mum during her final months, battling with Motor Neurone Disease (MND),” he said. “They greatly improved her quality of life and without them, we would not have had the time as a family we so very needed.”
Matt Holland said he was in disbelief that he had completed the challenge, reaching more than 30 miles during his run. “When I start at the bathing pools, it is hard to imagine what the challenge will be like. As I get onto that first run, I feel okay, and I think I could do this for the next eight, nine, or ten hours,” he remembered.
He said it was amazing to experience the sense of community during the challenge which included people showing up at different bays to join him, even his mum’s old friends. “One of the first things my mind turned to on that first run was what my mum would say and I decided she’d be going, ‘you’re absolutely crazy,’” he added.
Matt Holland ended his challenge at Fermain, a special place for his family. He finished the journey just before 21:00 BST on Monday which was a bit slower than he would have liked. Tired but proud, he would take some time to rest before deciding on his next adventure.
4. Why did Matt Holland take on the challenge
A. To set a world record. B. To treat his mother’s illness.
C. To raise money for a hospital. D. To improve his sailing skills.
5. What did Matt Holland think of his completing the challenge
A. He found it unbelievable.
B. He was still dissatisfied with it.
C. He believed it distanced him from his friends.
D. He thought his swimming talent helped him achieve it.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Matt Holland
A. Honest. B. Humorous. C. Self-centered. D. Strong-minded.
7. Which is the best title for the text
A. Holland’s 30 Bays Challenge B. A Community Event in Guernsey
C. The Life of a Sailing Instructor D. The History of Les Bourgs Hospice

Do you want to feel more positive, even if you’re stressed by what’s happening around you In fact, studies show that people who learn and practice a set of strategies to manage stress end up feeling better.
Last fall, Judith Moskowitz and her team at Northwestern University opened up an online course that targets (面向) positive emotions (情感). The course teaches eight skills, such as expressing thanks, enjoying good moments, and looking for the bright side of difficult situations. People who had signed up became part of a research study and were given a survey at the beginning and end of the course, to measure their levels of worry and positive emotions.
“We found that people improved on all the well-being outcomes we looked at,” says Moskowitz. And the more people stuck with the program—learning and practicing the skills — the more they improved. “They had less worry, less disappointment, fewer sleep problems, less social isolation and increases in positive emotions,” she adds.
JoAnna Littau from Alaska, who signed up for the course, shared how the course helped her see the beauty in her surroundings. “I focus on the mountains, and they calm me down,” JoAnna said. She noticed small positive moments each day, which lifted her spirits. “This moment right now is good,” she said to herself, as she took in the scene, and that became a springboard to more positive feelings throughout the day. Instead of thinking too much about everything on her to-do list or the demands of work, she’s focused on what she enjoys.
This focus on the positive shows the power of practicing the skills, Moskowitz says. “This fits with what we see coming out of the study,” she says, pointing to a 9% increase in positive emotions among people who took surveys at the start of the challenge and then again about 8 to 12 weeks later.
8. What does the online course focus on
A. Practicing positive thinking.
B. Spending good moments with friends.
C. Avoiding difficult situations.
D. Sharing tips for writing skills.
9. What were people who had signed up for the course asked to do in the study
A. Give a speech. B. Attend classes daily.
C. Perform an experiment. D. Complete a survey.
10. Why does the author mention JoAnna’s story
A. To discuss how to find a well-paid job.
B. To explain that JoAnna’s work is demanding.
C. To show the effectiveness of the course.
D. To stress the importance of outdoor activities.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Skills at managing time. B. Strategies to stay positive.
C. Reasons to cut work stress. D. Lessons on losing weight.
D
Under the large thick areas of ice in Antarctica (南极洲), there are hundreds of hidden lakes that play an important role in shaping Antarctica’s cold environment. These lakes affect how glaciers (冰川) move, which in turn can affect global sea levels.
Scientists have recently discovered 85 new subglacial (冰川下的) lakes using some information from the European Space Agency’s CryoSat satellite, which has been observing the area for over ten years. This discovery increases the total number of known active subglacial lakes in Antarctica to 231.
The study, published in Nature Communications, is important because these lakes drain (排水) and refill repeatedly, which makes it difficult to observe what happens deep under the ice.
Sally Wilson, a researcher from the University of Leeds, explained that the challenge is that these lakes are under hundreds of meters of ice. “It is hard to observe the process of filling and draining, as it can take months or years. Before this study, only 36 complete cycles of filling and draining had been observed. Now, we have observed 12 more complete fill-drain events, bringing the total to 48,” she said.
Satellites have been important in this discovery. CryoSat has been observing the thickness of polar ice and measuring changes in ice sheet heights over Greenland and Antarctica for over ten years. By checking the information from CryoSat, scientists could discern changes in the ice surface caused by the filling and draining of these subglacial lakes.
Understanding these changes brings new hope for studying sea level rise. Now, models used to study sea level rise do not include the effects of subglacial lakes. This new research will help improve these models by offering more information on how water moves under Antarctica’s ice. “By mapping where and when these lakes are active, we can have a better understanding of future sea level rise in advance,” said Sally.
12. What does the author point out in the first paragraph
A. Antarctica’s thick ice areas are becoming smaller.
B. Global warming puts subglacial lakes in danger.
C. Subglacial lakes affect Antarctica’s environment.
D. Rising sea levels strike the developing countries.
13. What does the author want to do in paragraph 4
A. Come up with new ideas about subglacial lakes.
B. Describe the possible problems subglacial lakes bring.
C. Raise a reasonable doubt about the appearance of subglacial lakes.
D. Present a further explanation for the trouble of observing subglacial lakes.
14. What does the underlined word “discern” in paragraph 5 mean
A. Choose. B. Discover. C. Create. D. Imagine.
15. What does Sally want to stress in the last paragraph
A. The role of Antarctica’s ice. B. The development of sea levels.
C. The disadvantages of these models. D. The value of the study’s findings.

Many athletes also support social causes, showing that empathy is beyond the game. Children tend to look up to these figures and learn to care about others. ____18____.
Lessons learned through competition

When the phone call came, I was halfway through finishing my math homework.
“Hello, is that Daniel ” a cheerful voice asked.
“Yes,” I replied, sitting up straighter.
“This is the Riverfront Festival Committee. Congratulations — you’ve been chosen as a volunteer for this year’s international music and arts celebration!”
I nearly dropped my pencil. For months I had been hoping for this chance. The Riverfront Festival was the biggest event in our city, drawing musicians, dancers, and artists from around the world. I had applied as soon as the forms opened, but with thousands of students competing, I hadn’t dared to expect success. Yet now it was real — I was going to be part of it.
After two weeks of careful training, the big day finally arrived. I pulled on my uniform (制服): a bright green T-shirt with my name tag, comfortable trainers, and a hat. As I looked in the mirror, I felt a rush of pride. This wasn’t just a T-shirt — it was a symbol that I belonged to something larger than myself.
When I reached the riverside park, I was excited. At the volunteer tent, I met our leader, Mrs. Jacobs, a kind but firm woman who had organized the festival for years. Beside me was Maya, another first-time volunteer with a calm smile. We were assigned (分派) to information services at the main gate, guiding visitors and answering questions.
The first hours passed quickly. Crowds of visitors poured in from every direction, filled with excitement. Families asked me where to find the children’s stage; tourists wanted directions to the location; and musicians hurried by carrying instrument cases. It was busy but fun — the kind of fun where I hardly noticed time flying by.

Dear Alex,
Last Friday afternoon, our school’s sports club held a three-legged race on the playground. It was one of the most exciting events I’ve ever taken part in.
Each team had three students. We tied our adjacent legs together tightly. Then we ran 100 meters as fast as we could. My teammates and I had practiced a lot before the race. During the run we shouted “one, two, one, two” to keep step. We didn’t get first place, but we felt happy when we crossed the finish line.
The race not only brought me lots of fun but also taught me the importance of teamwork. It was a memorable experience that I’ll cherish for a long time.
Yours,
Li Hua

Suddenly I saw a little girl crying near the gate. My heart jumped, but I forced myself to stay calm. I walked up to her, and then asked gently, “What’s your name ” She whispered, “Sophie.” “What’s wrong, Sophie ” I continued to ask. “I can’t find my parents.” I gave her an encouraging smile and promised her that she would be safe. To ease her fear, I kept telling her how brave she was, while I signaled to Maya to head toward the broadcast station. Within minutes, the announcement went out across the park, and soon Maya returned, leading a pair of anxious parents through the crowd toward us.
The little girl leapt into her mother’s arms, holding her tightly. Both parents kept repeating their thanks, with their voices breaking with relief. “You stayed with her and protected her. Thank you so much,” the mother said. In that moment, the true meaning of volunteering became clear to me: It was not about uniforms or schedules, but about being steady when someone needed it most. As I returned to the gate, a quiet pride filled me. I know I had played a small part in turning fear into joy.
