Matthew Weihmuller, despite being blind from birth, earned his master’s degree in music at Florida State University. He also tours with a band that shows elements of jazz and rock. Additionally, he is a composer, using specialized music technology for the blind. He frequently engages as a speaker, having been a guest lecturer at John Hopkins University.
While explaining his shift from performance to teaching, Weihmuller said, “All great performers teach, and it’s the only way to pass along this craft, especially about jazz music. I found that teaching became more my calling than performing. I wanted to make a difference, and that was really important to me.”
Innovatively, Weihmuller uses a unique teaching method to enhance communication among jazz students. When practising a play, he turns off the lights, removes the visualelements and forces students to rely more on their other senses. They have to feel their instrument with their fingers and hands. Weihmuller’s own blindness has fueled his mastery of other senses, particularly crucial in playing jazz. “You have to turn your disadvantage into an advantage. Where there is a will, there is a way.” Weihmuller said.
Reflecting on his early struggles with sheet music, Weihmuller recalled the challenge of obtaining braille (盲文) music, which was not as accessible then as it is today. To overcome this obstacle, he had to create his own braille music, a process that continued through his college years.
Weihmuller has a strong desire to influence his students with value of perseverance and musical progression. His ultimate goal is to inspire others facing challenges and disabilities. He added, “I do hope that when they leave my classroom, they’re not only better musicians but also better people.”
24. What can we learn about Weihmuller from Paragraph 1
A. He has multiple roles. B. He owns a music band.
C. He complains of his disability. D. He gives talks worldwide.
25. What drives Weihmuller to turn to music teaching
A. The duty to help performers. B. The strong desire to succeed.
C. The will to pass down music. D. The aim to gain independence.
26 Why did Weihmuller turn off lights in his music class
A To reduce students’ anxiety. B. To train physical abilities.
C. To teach students better. D. To test learning results.
27 Which of the following can best describe Weihmuller
A. Outgoing and caring. B. Courageous and honest.
C. Creative and determined. D. Knowledgeable and patient.

There are millions — possibly billions — of ponds (池塘).Yet for a century or so, they are poorly understood and scientists have paid them very little attention. This neglect (忽视) might not have mattered if it were not for increasing evidence that ponds are extremely important habitats for wildlife.
Ponds are being shown more bio-diverse than rivers or lakes. Interestingly, this seems to be partly due to the small size of ponds, which allows them to have a wide range of conditions. The community in a pond with clear water will be very different to that in a nearby seasonal pond made cloudy by farm animals. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams, as flowing water tends to equalize water chemistry.
So why have we ignored such a vital part of the natural world A key reason appears to be the bias (偏见) we humans have where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, scientists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find.
Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are artificial habitats: we look at the human-made examples around us and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. In our new book Ponds, Pools and Puddles, we show that ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a constant presence.
Now, views are taking on new shapes. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a proposal on small wetlands, including ponds, giving crucial recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDER FUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds.
In a world where freshwater faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological (生态的) engineering we can easily achieve to help support one of the most threatened bits of the environment.
28. What may contribute to the biodiversity of ponds
A. The nearby animals. B. The constant temperature water.
C. Their diverse conditions. D. Their regularly changing conditions.
29. What caused ponds to be neglected
A. People’s love for nature. B. Insufficient ponds for research.
C. People’s mistaken belief of ponds. D. Lacking scientific research methods.
30. Why is “PONDERFUL project” mentioned
A. To promote the Ramsar Convention.
B. To prepare for the research on ponds
C. To highlight the importance of small wetlands.
D. To show the changing attitudes towards ponds.
31. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. Penny wise, pound foolish. B. A small key opens a big door.
C. Small streams make great rivers D. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
D
Researchers at the University of Washington are studying a concept called “marine cloud brightening,” which aims to slow climate change by spraying clouds with sea salt. Salt particles (颗粒) help clouds form tiny, shiny water droplets, which reflect sunlight away from the earth before it can heat the planet.
The white tops of certain clouds act like a natural sunscreen for the planet; the water droplets and ice crystals within reflect 30 to 60 percent of sunlight that hits them according to NASA. Geoengineering researchers believe they can make clouds brighter and increase their cooling effect by increasing the number of droplets they contain. Some scientists hope it could buy humanity more time to cut carbon emissions.
In April, University of Washington scientists started testing a saltwater spraying machine on the deck of the USS Hornet, a retired aircraft carrier in Alameda. The city paused the experiment in May, citing health and environmental concerns, but outside consultants hired by the city later concluded the test doesn’t pose “a measurable health risk to the surrounding community”.
The Alameda experiment isn’t meant to “alter clouds or any aspect of the local weather or climate,” according to Sarah Doherty, an atmospheric scientist who runs the university’s marine cloud brightening program. The scientists are only testing whether their salt spray machine works and studying how salt particles move through the air.
This highlights the strong opposition scientists face when they research anything related to geoengineering, a broad category of techniques that aim to manipulate (操纵) the climate. Some environmentalists argue that these ideas could have dangerous, unpredictable side effects and are a distraction from cutting carbon emissions, the most surefire way to avoid climate change. It may give polluters an excuse to keep pumping carbon into the atmosphere. “Geoengineering experiments, like the Marine Cloud Brightening project in the Bay Area, risk legitimizing (合法化) a harmful technology,” wrote Mary Church, who works for an American and Swiss environmental nonprofit.
32. How does “marine cloud brightening” slow climate change
A. By injecting clouds with sea salt to decrease sunlight reflection.
B. By spraying clouds with sea salt to prevent the formation of water droplets.
C. By increasing the number of shiny water droplets in clouds to reflect sunlight.
D. By reducing the number of droplets in clouds to increase sunlight absorption.
33. Why was the experiment put on hold in May
A. Environmental reasons. B. Insufficiency of funds.
C. Poor project assessment. D. Lack of community support.
34. What is “geoengineering” according to the text
A. Study of the side ettects of climate change.
B. A distraction from cutting carbon emissions.
C. Methods of controlling the climate to cope with global warming.
D. Technologies and their potential applications for people’s health.
35. What is a major concern about “marine cloud brightening”
A. It is too costly to be widely applied.
B. It keeps pumping carbon into the atmosphere.
C. It could result in over-dependence on harmful technologies.
D. It may lead to unintended environmental consequences.

“Where is it We’re going to be late!” Janice searched the house crazily for her wallet. “Josh! Did you hide my wallet We have to be at Grandpa’s for his birthday party!” Josh, Janice’s four-year-old younger brother, smiled innocently at her, but his cunning (狡黠的) eyes gave himself away. She tried her best not to shout. Grinning (咧嘴笑) like a cat, Josh reached under the sofa, pulled out her wallet and held it over his head. Janice grabbed it.
Ten minutes later, they hurried to the train station. Red-faced and sweating, Janice let go of Josh’s wrist and removed the sweat from her forehead. The train arrived. Her smile froze when she realized that the train was packed with passengers. Grabbing Josh’s hand, Janice boarded the train. She commanded, “The train’s really crowded, Josh. Behave yourself, stick close to me, and no monkey business!” Josh nodded, holding tightly to a rail. Janice smiled.
When it was time to get off the train, Janice quickly pushed her way through the crowd to get onto the platform. “We made it!” Janice said, turning around. Josh was nowhere to be seen. The crowd was flooding out, but Josh was not among them. “The train doors are closing,” then came the electronic voice. Soon, the crowd on the platform died down. The last thing Janice saw was Josh’s little anxious face at the train window: Just as Janice was about to call out Josh’s name, the train disappeared from view. “Josh!” Janice screamed.
Janice’s mind was transported back to when she was lost at the zoo. She could still vividly remember the towering figures surrounding her and none of them were’ familiar. “I don’t want Josh to go through that same bitter experience,” Janice let out a sigh.
Janice took out her mobile phone, ready to call her mother. However, midway, she decided against it. Her mother, who was far away in France on business, could do nothing but get restless. Janice paced up and down the platform anxiously.

6. C 7. B
【原文】M: So, can you tell me about your previous work experience
W: Well, when I first finished university, I spent six months cleaning offices, but I suppose it has nothing to do with a manager role.

W: Haha, Well, I can certainly do that. But after that I got my second job as a secretary.

W: Like what
M: Well, if I have a list of things to remember, I often make up a funny sentence with the words on the list.
W: That sounds interesting!
M: I have a great book. It teaches you all kinds of different ways to remember things. You can borrow it if you like.

【原文】W: I knew I was ill from the moment I woke up that day. Although I had had a full night’s sleep, my head felt heavy and I was still very tired. As the day went on, I started feeling worse and worse. Of course, with everything going on in the world, I immediately thought of coronavirus. I had some tests. I took one and it was positive. I’d already had coronavirus vaccination, but I knew it was still possible to get the virus.
Over the next few days, I developed a cough and a high temperature. Though I did not lose my sense of smell, my doctor advised me to stay at home and have friends bring food over for me. In all, I spent a whole week in bed. I was so tired and slept most of the time. Eventually, I got sick of the sight of my bedroom. So for the last couple days of my illness, I moved downstairs to the sofa in the living room so I could watch TV.
I was very thankful because I had had the vaccination I felt terrible but I knew it would have been a lot worse. Without the vaccination I could have ended up in hospital.

66. Dear Tom,
I'm thrilled to hear that you're interested in taking up a course on Chinese culture and I would suggest going for the Chinese painting class.
The reason is that learning Chinese painting will not only allow you to appreciate one of the core elements of our artistic heritage but also provide you with a unique approach to understanding our culture's aesthetics and philosophy. It's a skill that transcends language barriers and could potentially become a lifelong hobby.
Whatever you decide, I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time diving deeper into our culture. Looking forward to hearing about your experiences!
Best wishes

Janice wrapped him into a tight hug, whispering, “Thank goodness! I’ve found you at last!” Taking Josh’s hand, Janice approached the kind lady passenger, who had been accompanying Josh and had missed her own train. Janice expressed her sincere appreciation repeatedly.

Having had a delicious meal and a happy chat, they parted with Grandpa and started their trip back home. This time, Janice held Josh’s hand all the way and they boarded the returning train. “Thankfully you don’t have to be put through that terrible experience,” Janice smiled at Josh, assuring her brother, “Never will I leave you alone.” For them, this unforgettable trip would stick in their memories.
