This is my fourth mission to space, my second to the International Space Station (ISS), and I’ve been here for three weeks now. I’m getting better at knowing where I am when I first wake up.
My bedroom is just big enough for me and my sleeping bag, two laptops, some clothes, photos of my wife and daughters, a few books. Getting dressed is a little bit difficult when I can’t “sit” or “stand”, but I’ve gotten used to it. The most challenging thing is putting on my socks. It’s not a challenge to figure out what to wear, since I wear the same thing every day. However, without gravity to help me bend over, it is very difficult to pull my legs up to my chest.
At present, we have three Americans living at the station: Samantha, Terry and me. Samantha is one of the few women to have served as a fighter pilot in the Italian Air Force, and she is competent in everything technical. She is also friendly and quick to laugh. She is especially gifted for language. She has native-level fluency in English and Russian (the two official languages of the ISS) as well as French, German, and her native Italian. She is also working on learning Chinese.
For some people who hope to fly in space, language can be a challenge. We all have to be able to speak a second language (I’ve been studying Russian for years), but the European and Japanese astronauts have the added burden of learning two languages if they don’t already speak English or Russian.
Terry was a test pilot before joining NASA. He has all the positive qualities of a leader—optimism, enthusiasm, friendliness—and none of the negative ones. I’ve found him to be consistently competent, and I appreciate that as a leader he is a consensus(共识) builder rather than a bossy commander. Since I’ve been up here, he has always been respectful of my previous experience, always open to suggestions about how to do things better rather than getting defensive or competitive.
24. Why does the author find it challenging to put on his socks at the ISS
A. He has too many choices. B. It is uneasy to pull his legs up.
C. The bedroom is too small. D. He can’t find a chair to sit on.
25. Samantha has left the deepest impression on the author probably because of her ______.
A. good humor B. technical skills
C. language talent D. loud laughing
26. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Speaking English or Russian is a must for the ISS astronauts.
B. All the ISS astronauts have to be able to speak three languages.
C. European and Japanese astronauts are not good at communication.
D. There are language workshops on the International Space Station.
27. Which of the following can best describe Terry
A. He is competitive and defensive. B. He is a perfect leader.
C. He is the most experienced man at the ISS. D. He is just a little bit bossy.

When Kari Leibowitz first arrived in the Norwegian city of Troms , she was both attracted by.and fearful of, the approaching winter. Two hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle, the city does not see the sun from mid-November to mid-January, a far cry from Stanford, California, where she had been studying before travelling to Norway.
In many countries, the short days of winter are thought to cause low mood, yet Troms ’s residents do not show the similar wintertime depression. As a psychologist, Leibowitz was curious about the ways they lived with the long“polar night”.
Previous research shows that people who see stressful events as “challenges”, with an opportunity to learn and adapt, tend to cope much better than those who focus more on the threatening aspects — like the possibility of failure or embarrassment. To test whether a different outlook could also explain the resilience (适应力) of Troms ’s residents, Leibowitz designed the “wintertime mindset scale”, asking participants to rate how much they agreed or disagreed with statements about winter such as“I love the coziness of winter.” and “Winter is boring.”
She found that participants’ answers predicted their well-being over the coming months: the more they saw the winter as an exciting opportunity to enjoy an icy climate, the higher levels of overall mental health they have. Besides, Leibowitz found that these attitudes actually increase with latitude(纬度) — the positive mindset is most common where it’s most needed.
Indeed, many of Leibowitz’s friends embraced the possibility of skiing in the mountains, or having a warm drink in the candlelight. “There is this interaction between the culture you’re part of and the mindset growing out of it,” says Joar Vitters , Leibowitz’s colleague at the Arctic University of Tromso.
Soon, Leibowitz found her own mindset shifting: She learned to love long walks with a headlamp guiding her path, and came to appreciate the“soft, peaceful” appearance of the city in the darkness. “Most people just hate the winter and feel like there’s nothing they can do about it... But once you put it in people’s heads that they have control over their mindset, that’s when something powerful happens,” says Leibowitz.
28. What do we know about the residents of Troms
A. They are longing for the coming winter.
B. They see winter as an opportunity to work out.
C. They are likely to become depressed in winter.
D. They are seldom influenced by winter stress.
29. Why did Leibowitz carry out her research
A. To prove wintertime depression as a challenge.
B. To suggest the ways to deal with the hard winter.
C. To find out whether the previous theory applies to Troms .
D. To help the local inhabitants get through the long polar night.
30. What can we conclude from Leibowitz’s findings
A. A positive mindset may indicate a high life satisfaction in winter.
B. Winter offers people a better opportunity to interact with friends.
C. People in high latitude are less optimistic when facing long dark nights.
D. Troms ’s residents are negatively influenced by the environment.
31. Which of the following will Leibowitz most probably agree with
A. People hate winter because they can do nothing.
B. Long walks help to change people’s mindset.
C. Awareness of control over mindset makes a difference.
D. It’s of great fun to ski in the winter mountains.

Children are taught that the polite thing to do is always say “please”, Today’s babies are even taught it using sign language. But how often do you really say “please” in everyday conversations A new research published in Social Psychology Quarterly found people used the word “please” when making a request only 7% of the time.
“We definitely were surprised by the results,” says Tanya Stivers, a professor of sociology at University of California at Los Angeles and one of the authors of the study. “Having such a low number feels counterintuitive.”
Using conversation analysis, the study investigated when and where people use “please” in everyday requests. Not only do people use “please” less than 10% of the time when making requests, but they also tend to use it most when they expect a “no” response is forthcoming. Most interestingly, requests phrased with “please” are no more likely to work than other polite requests. Why Because the word “please” is being used as a way to convince the other person into agreeing with a request they might otherwise be unwilling to do. This small talk can leave the person being asked feeling uncomfortable.
“We found that using ‘please’ often indicates that you’re requesting something you shouldn’t be,” Stivers says. According to the study, people are most likely to use “please” when asking someone to stop doing what they’re doing and do what the asker wants instead, or when making a request they think the other person isn’t going to like.
“What people are really trying to say by saying ‘please’ often is that they’re polite people,” Stivers says. “Sometimes, it doesn’t mean you’re not being polite just because you’re not saying ‘please’. There’re many other phrases we use when making requests to show politeness.” These include things like. “Would you mind… ”, Would it be OK… and “How about… ”
It is so funny that we socialize children to do this thing we adults don’t do, but teaching kids to say “please” isn’t bad. Just ensure you’re also including other polite phrases. “If someone is trying to be more polite, I’d recommend adding other polite phrases first, before adding in more ‘pleases’,” says Stivers.
32. What does the underlined word “counterintuitive” in paragraph 2 mean
A. The same as the fact. B. Contrary to common sense.
C. Reasonable to accept. D. Difficult to disagree with.
33. Why does “please” probably fail to work as effectively as expected
A. It makes one feel forced. B. It is said in a rude manner.
C. It leaves the asker stressed. D. It gives one a sense of mistrust.
34. What is probably Tanya Stivers’s opinion about being polite
A. It asks people to make requests. B. It means saying “please” more.
C. It ought to be done smartly. D. It is a result of societal change.
35. What might be the best title for the text
A. Polite Phrases Now Have Got New Meanings
B. Polite Phrases Are Used More Often in Daily Life
C. Many Other Polite Phrases Are Replacing “Please”
D. “Please” May Soon Become a Thing of the Past

If there’s one thing I can’t stand people saying, it’s “I’m not good at anything. I don’t have any talent.” I just don’t buy that at all. To me, everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find, it does exist. There was a time when I didn’t believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 2023.
At that time, I was a high school student. I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds. I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned, in just about every other department I was a loser. I wanted to fit in, to be someone and do something well. But I hadn’t found anything I was good at. One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school’s running track. The teacher taught us various track and field events. I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin (标枪). Suddenly something inside me began saying, “Try it! Try it!” I had to wait for my turn, though, because several others wanted a break at the javelin too. Shy and scared, I watched them, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw-the best throw going about 30 yards-I looked at the teacher.
“Hey, Orowitz, you want to try ” he asked.
Embarrassed, I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
“Well, come on then,” he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin. Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand, I was seized with a strange feeling-a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason, I was relaxed over what I was about to do, even though I’d never done it before. I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go. The same voice that had urged me into throwing it, now told me it was a good throw.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I watched as the javelin took off.

Text 10 进大学养老
M: “Are we alone in the universe ” asks Meenakshi Wadhwa, a professor at Arizona State University (ASU). In ASU’s lecture hall, everything seems normal—students listen attentively, taking notes and photos. But the hearing aids show how unusual this class is.
Mirabella, a 20-storey “university retirement community” on ASU’s campus, is home to over 300 retired people. Most residents are having a ball. They get a university pass, which allows them to attend the same classes and cultural events as students, but with the special benefit of not having to take exams. Golf buggies can drive them around the campus, though many are still fit enough for mountain biking. In their dorms, four restaurants serve better food than those at the university canteens. And there is an art studio, a gym and a games room. Only the second floor feels like a retirement community, with a memory-care center for residents who need round-the-clock attention. The idea sprang from two college presidents who wanted to retire on campus. Today, universities ranging from Iowa State University to Stanford University offer senior-living arrangements.
Bill Gates, an 80-year-old former newspaper editor, moved to Mirabella with his wife two years ago. They have made friends with other residents, and to their surprise, with younger students as well. “Being among young people is really interesting,” says Mr. Gates.

I watched as the spear took off. My heart quickened as the Javelin sailed through the sky and finally inserted heavily into the ground, surpassing 30 yards. It turned out to be the best throw. At the sight of the result, all my classmates present burst into thunderous applause. At that moment, the teacher patted me on the shoulder, smiling to encourage me to join the school team and practice more. Suddenly, a surge of confidence rose up inside me and I felt I gradually fitted in my class.
That night I took the javelin home with me. I stared at the javelin, reflecting on what had happened in the gym class. A thought suddenly occurred to me that I should practice it hard. The following months witnessed my efforts in practicing javelin. Finally, the glory of the champion in a javelin competition enveloped me and a smile spread across my face when I stepped onto the award platform. At the moment, it downed on me that everyone has a talent as long as he or she can make attempts with courage.
