With China’s development, there is a growing need to learn Chinese. As a result, many learners of Chinese start to use online apps. The traditional Chinese lunar calendar (农历) divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气). Start of Spring, the first solar term of the year, begins this year on February 4 and ends on February 18.
After Start of Spring everything turns green and is full of energy, people clearly see that the daytime is becoming longer and the weather is becoming warmer.
Here are some things you should know about Start of Spring.
Flying kites
Spring is the best season for kite-flying. This is a traditional folk activity, which has a history of more than 2,000 years. It can help build one’s health and keep people from getting sick.
Biting the spring
In many parts of China, it is a tradition to “bite the spring” on the first day of Start of Spring. People eat spring pancakes and spring rolls (春卷).
Appreciating plum blossoms (赏梅)
Plums blossoms from the 12th lunar month to the second month of the next year. The plum blossom always fights against the cold. In China, the plum blossom is praised as one of the four gentlemen of Chinese flowers.
Welcoming spring

Wood mice spend the day resting and come out at night to look for food. Most wood mice stay in the same general area. Wood mice have different kinds of foods like plants, peanuts, fruits and so on. They will also eat insects. In very cold weather, wood mice sometimes go into a torpid state (不活泼状态). In this way they use less energy than usual. The female wood mice have 4 to 7 babies at a time. Baby mice’s eyes are closed when they are born. At 6 days old, they open their eyes and by then they will have a full coat of fur darker than that of the adult. After 3 weeks, the mother makes her babies go out of the nest and they are then on their own. Many do not live for more than 3 to 4 months. However, the number of wood mice doesn’t change a lot.
