Lixia, also known as the Start of Summer, falls on May 5th or 6th each year. 56
As its name suggests, in this solar term (节气), spring is ending and summer is on its way. It’s a time when the temperature increases quickly with heavier rainfall. 57 So the solar term is important for farming. In the Zhou Dynasty (1046—256 BC), emperors led officials to carry out ceremonies to welcome the Start of Summer and wish for a good harvest.
The ancient Chinese people believed the Start of Summer also had something to do with health because of the rising humidity and temperatures. For example, in Deqing county in Zhejiang province, people still follow the custom of weighing children on Lixia when families go on an outing. A large scale (称)more than 1 meter long is hung on a small chair, allowing the child in the chair to be weighed safely. 58 And they should avoid weight loss in summer. Locals believe that after this weighing ceremony, children can survive and grow strong in the summer heat.
59 It is the way children eat and play with eggs. Parents put boiled eggs into small net-like bags, and hang them on their children’s chests. Egg fighting starts when a child goes to meet their friends, each holding one egg. They hit each other’s eggs in pairs. 60 The last one whose egg is not broken is the final winner.
Lixia reflects the changes in nature and embodies the wisdom of Chinese people as well.
A.The winners continue the egg fighting.
B.This custom reminds people to keep fit.
C.People like growing crops at this time.
D.It’s also a time when crops grow quickly.
E.There is another interesting food custom on Lixia.

【原文】Recently I watched a movie called home coming. It’s about China saving its people from other countries. A war breaks out in the country in north Africa. Millions of Chinese people are in danger. They look forward to coming back to China and seeing their families. The Chinese government begins to help them leave right away. One thing touched me the most. When Zong Dawei, the main character, finally gets back home, it is Chinese New Year. The sound of fireworks is everywhere. This is a happy moment, but because of his experiences in north Africa, these sounds often make Zong scared. Hearing the sound of the fireworks in peace, I feel the war is really terrible. I’m thankful to our motherland for her hard work, which lets us live a safe life. It not only lets me feel the power of our motherland, but also makes me feel proud of being Chinese. After seeing the movie, I’ve made up my mind to work hard, hoping that I can work for the development of China in the future.
