There can be magic in the touch of a hand that loves you. It brings comfort and a silent promise that says, “I am here and you are not alone.”
I remembered every detail about my children. As babies, they reached for me whenever they were hungry or tired or just needed to be held. Sometimes, if they woke in the night, just the touch of my hand would ease (使……放松) them back to sleep. They stuck to (紧跟) me when they took their first steps and we held hands when crossing streets and walking from the car to their classroom on their first day of school.
As they grew older and more independent, I noticed that they didn’t hold my hand much any more. I told myself it was part of growing up, and I should just be glad they could do things on their own now. But when you’ve been needed so much for such a long time, it’s hard to step back and feel unnecessary.
Then one day, I was visiting my oldest son in New York, where he was working as an actor on a TV show. As we were about to cross a busy street that was filled with traffic, he grabbed my hand and shouted, “Hang on to me, Mom,” then led me safely across.
At that moment, I realized two things. First, my boy had become a man. Second, it was clear that our roles had changed. We still needed each other, but in different ways from before.
That scene has replayed in different ways with each of my three children. They have all taught me to lean on (依赖) them just as they once leaned on me, and that we can always lean on each other. We live miles apart, but stay in touch every day. There is magic and comfort and healing in the touch of a hand that loves you, even if it “touches” you from afar.
49. How did the author get along with her children when they were young
A. She had a close relationship with them.
B. She was very strict with them.
C. She was too busy to look after them.
D. She didn’t care about them.
50. What does the underlined word “independent” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Getting help from parents B. Feeling lonely
C. Following others’ advice D. Doing things by oneself
51. The author’s visit to her son in New York made her realize ________.
A. time with children was always fun
B. her son had become a full-grown man whom she could lean on
C. she needed her son more than before
D. she was unwilling to accept the change in their roles
52. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A. To show the power of the touch of a hand.
B. To describe how to educate her children.
C. To explore when the parents can lean on their children.
D. To present how parents influence their kids.
C
What would life be like if AI (artificial intelligence) solved all your problems You wouldn’t have to work anymore. You could get anything you wanted by just moving a finger. You could get pleasure whenever you wanted. Death would become almost a choice—you could turn into a digital form (数字化的形式) and keep going for a million years.
All that sounds terrible to me.
It’s true that humans don’t like problems. But if we had no problems to solve, what would be the point of living How long would we be happy sitting on top of our big mountains of candy For me, a long weekend would be enough. A million years of perfect happiness would feel like a terrible dream.
Professor Nick Bostrom from a famous university believes that even if AI could do everything perfectly, people might still “work” at “jobs” in “offices”. “But these jobs would really be more like hobbies.”
That wouldn’t be a problem, you might say, as people could stay busy doing other things. They could go shopping, do some gardening or take care of their children. But one reason people get satisfied with such activities is that they pride themselves on being good at them.
They know how to find the right beds, grow roses or dry a child’s tears. However, AI will probably do these all better than you. In a world like that, you might feel helpless.
But life in that “perfect” world might still be bearable (可忍受的), says Bostrom. For example, we could ask our computers to give us interesting tasks. In Greg Egan’s sci-fi novel Permutation City, a man forces himself to develop new hobbies to keep from being bored. He finds joy in making table legs and ends up making 162,329 of them.
Bostrom advises us not to rush to make a decision. We might end up liking the future. “The question here is not how interesting a future is to look at, but how good it is to live in,” he says.
53. How does the writer feel about a life where AI could solve all problems
A. People would find real joy. B. Life would be terrible.
C. There would be no more jobs. D. Life would be interesting.
54. What does Bostrom say about “future jobs” if AI could do everything
A. People might fight against AI for jobs. B. People might give up creating new tasks.
C. People might have less time to relax. D. People might still do some work.
55. When might people feel helpless in a world with smart AI
A. When they compare their abilities with AI’s.
B. When they find AI cannot finish their tasks.
C. When they work together with AI in offices.
D. When they can’t order AI to work for them.
56. What question does the writer want us to think about most
A. Do we need to stop making AI smarter now
B. Is it a good idea to stay alive for millions of years
C. Can life keep meaningful if AI solves all problems
D. What can we do to improve our skills
D
Life was very different at Scott’s home. Scott lived with his father, a judge (法官), his mother, and his sister. There were other animals as well, such as cats and chickens. White Fang had to learn that the other people in the house were friends and that he must not attack the chickens or cats.
One day, he killed fifty of the birds. Scott was angry with White Fang. He did not beat him badly, but he pushed his head at the dead birds and hit White Fang at the same time. This way, White Fang knew he had done wrong.
“The animal is a wolf,” Scott’s father said. “You’ll never teach him not to kill chickens.”
“He won’t attack another chicken,” Scott said. “Will you make a bet with me ”
The judge agreed, and the two men had a bet.
“I’ll lock White Fang in the chicken house,” Scott said. “He can stay there all night. In the morning, not one chicken will be dead.”
And this was what happened. White Fang behaved as if there were no chickens in the chicken house. He had learned his lesson.
By this time, everyone in Scott’s family liked White Fang. They felt safe with him because he knew them, even though he was not a “house dog.”
After Scott came back home from the Yukon, a dangerous man appeared. His name was Jim Hall, and he had killed many men. He wanted to kill the judge who had sent him to prison. This was Scott’s father.
One night, Jim Hall got into the house and planned to shoot (射击) the judge while he slept. However, White Fang saw the strange man. He knew that this man was not a friend and leapt at him. A fight went on for a long time. Jim Hall shot White Fang several times, but White Fang would not let him go.
The noise woke everyone up. The police came and took Jim Hall back to prison. White Fang’s wounds were very bad, and he was dying. Scott sent for a doctor who looked at White Fang and said, “He has only one chance in a thousand of living.”
The doctor did everything he could for White Fang, but he lost a lot of blood. He had a broken leg, and there were bullet holes in his chest. But as the days passed, White Fang slowly got better. He lived, but he could not fight again. He lived the rest of his life quietly with Scott and his family, a much gentler and much loved wolf-dog.
