Eleven-year-old Ruby has a unique hobby—making wishes come true for nursing home residents in
Harrison, Arkansas. Inspired by her mother’s work as a nurse, Ruby accompanied her mother to the
nursing homes during the summer and has developed a close bond with the elderly residents.
One day, Ruby noticed a resident named Pearl looking sad while staring out of a window. When she
asked what was wrong, Pearl explained that she had seen her dog being taken away, and she didn’t know
when she would see her beloved pet again. It broke Ruby’s heart, and she decided to take action. She
began asking the residents what three things they wanted most in the world. To her surprise, their requests
were simple—chocolate bars, McDonald’s fries, and pants that fit properly.
Ruby and her mother used their own money to achieve the wishes of around 100 residents within
three months. Soon, they started receiving donations from the kind-hearted people of Harrison.
Encouraged by the overwhelming response, they set up a GoFundMe page called “Three Wishes for
Ruby’s Residents” to collect $5,000. They reached their goal within a month.
When GoFundMe recognized Ruby as a Kid Hero and shared her story worldwide, donations poured
in. In just 24 hours, they raised $20,000, and within five months, the total surpassed $250,000. With these
funds, they were able to grant more creative wishes, such as creating a man cave for one resident with a
Walkman and snacks, and providing financial assistance for another resident to attend an out-of-state
wedding.
Motivated by their success, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents became a nonprofit organization and
expanded nationwide. Their new goal is to set up a shared laptop in at least one nursing home in each
state. Ruby’s passion for kindness drives her to continue her efforts, and her acts of kindness serve as a
reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life.

You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 percent of its words from French. The
reason goes back to the year 1066, when Norman forces invaded(入侵 ) what is now Britain. The
Normans were from northern France and spoke French. During the Norman occupation, French became
the language of England’s rulers and wealthy class. This lasted for more than 300 years. Other people in
England continued to speak English during this period.
Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believe that about
10,000 French words eventually entered the English language. However, although English took many
French words, their meanings have not always stayed the same. Sometimes the differences in meanings
can be very important, and lead to funny or strange situations if the words are used in the wrong way.
Take, for example, the French word college. In English, college can often be used in place of the
word university, or sometimes as a school within a university. However, in French, college actually means
“middle school”, or the level of schooling for students in grades five or six through eight.
There are many other similar words in the two languages with completely different meanings. In
English, the word chat is a verb which means “to talk casually”; but in French, the word chat is the word
for an animal: a cat.
If an English speaker says someone is jolly, that means they are cheerful or friendly. But in French,
jolie means someone is good-looking or pleasant to look at. In any case, both are nice things to say to
someone.
28. What does the author stress about the French words in English
A.Their spelling forms. B.Their changes in history.
C.Their puzzles for English. D.Their different meanings.
29. What does a Frenchman mean if he says he likes a chat
A.He likes a kind of pet. B.He wants to have a talk.
C.He hates to speak English. D.He prefers to chat in French.
30. What is the French word “jolie” used to do
A.Replace “jolly” in English. B.Describe people's looks.
C.Refer to people’s happiness. D.Prove the change in French.
31. What is the text mainly about
A.Comparison between two languages. B.Difficulty in grasping English.
C.French words in English. D.Development of English.

Five years ago, French navy officer Jér me Chardon was listening to a radio program about the
journey of the bar-tailed godwit (斑尾塍鹬 ), which flies about 14,000 kilometers, moving from New
Zealand to Alaska. Chardon knew how hard the journey would be, as heavy storms hit Pacificisland
communities frequently. Yet, bar-tailed godwits pass through the area uninjured. Chardon wondered
whether learning how godwits navigate could help us avoid disasters.
This January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began to test
Chardon’s idea. Researchers led by Frédéric Jiguet equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting-edge
animal tracking technology. They attached tags (标签) to the birds in French Polynesia. These tags send
the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sends the data back to scientists on Earth
who can then follow the birds as they hunt for food, move and rest — all the while waiting to see how the
birds respond to natural disasters.
The project is focusing on birds’ ability to hear the low-frequency sound that humans can’t hear, and
researchers believe it might be the most likely signal birds would use to sense disasters. In a 2014 study,
scientists tracking golden-winged warblers in America found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to
escape from an outbreak of tsunami that killed 35 people and cost more than one billion dollars. This
showed they’d heard the storm system in advance. “Tracking that behavior of birds may help us develop
an early warning system,” Jiguet says.
Bernard, a famous tsunami scientist, said, “Don’t overstress the tsunami warning aspect of this
project, because most tsunamis are harmlessly small, and false alarms cause economic damage.” “Even if
the attempt to develop a bird-based tsunami early warning system fails, the project will still help scientists
protect birds. In that sense, the research has already yielded results,” Jiguet said. “The first season’s
tracking data has become a useful clue for bird experts to protect these species among rising seas and the
changing climate.”
32. What is the researchers’ purpose in tracking birds of different species
A.To learn more about their lifestyles.
B.To know their reactions to disasters.
C.To test an animal tracking technology.
D.To help them adapt to the local environment.
33. Why is the 2014 study mentioned in paragraph 3
A.To prove birds can sense disasters in advance.
B.To prove tsunamis are common in America.
C.To show humans can’t hear low-frequency sounds.
D.To show natural disasters cause severe damage to people.
34. What would Jiguet think of their research
A.Successful. B.Challenging. C.Rewarding. D.Meaningless.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A.How are natural disasters posing a threat to society
B.Is it necessary to develop an early-warning system
C.Why do we need to prepare for natural disasters
D.Can birds give a clue to natural disasters

Dear Mike,
I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with course selection. Many of us face the same
situation, so don't worry too much. I'd like to share my thoughts with you.
When selecting a subject, I believe interest should be your top priority. If you're not
interested in a subject, it can be challenging to study it effectively. Additionally, it is also
helpful to analyze your current grades and figure out your strengths. For instance, if you're
logical and enjoy solving problems, physics might be suitable for you. If you prefer exploring
history and culture, history may be a great choice. Choosing subjects you're good at can boost
your confidence and help you adapt to the learning pace.
I hope my advice is of great help. Take your time to think carefully and I am sure you
will make a decision that suits you best.
Yours,
Li Hua

【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了英语中存在大量法语词汇的现象。本文讲述的是“英语中的法
语单词”。文中举例说明了它们不同的含义。诺曼人对英国长期的统治,给英语带来了大量的法语词

not always stayed the same. Sometimes the differences in meanings can be very important, and lead to
funny or strange situations if the words are used in the wrong way.可知,作者对英语中的法语单词强调了
它们的不同含义。故选 D。
29.推理判断题。根据第三段中 In English, the word chat is a verb which means “to talk casually”; but in
French, the word chat is the word for an animal: a cat.可知,如果一个法国人说他喜欢 a chat,他的意思

是“他喜欢一种宠物。”,因为在法语里 chat是 cat的意思,故选 A。
30.词义猜测题。根据最后一段中 But in French, jolie means someone is good-looking or pleasant to look
at. In any case, both are nice things to say to someone.可知,在法语中,jolie的意思是说某人长得好看

31.主旨大意题。根据第一段第一句 You may be surprised to learn that English gets 30 to 45 percent of its
words from French.和 Over time, the two languages combined and shared words. Some researchers believe
that about 10,000 French words eventually entered the English language.可知,本文讲述的是“英语中的法

由 Frédéric Jiguet领导的研究人员为 5个物种的 56只鸟类配备了尖端的动物追踪技术)”及“These tags
send the birds’ locations to the International Space Station, which sends the data back to scientists on Earth
who can then follow the birds as they hunt for food, move and rest — all the while waiting to see how the
birds respond to natural disasters.(这些标签将鸟类的位置发送到国际空间站,国际空间站将数据传回
地球上的科学家,然后他们可以跟踪鸟类寻找食物,移动和休息——同时等待观察鸟类如何应对自
然灾害)”可推知,研究人员追踪不同种类鸟类的目的是了解它们对灾难的反应。故选 B。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“In a 2014 study, scientists tracking golden-winged warblers in America
found that the birds flew up to 1,500 kilometers to escape from an outbreak of tsunami that killed 35 people
and cost more than one billion dollars. This showed they’d heard the storm system in advance.(在 2014年
的一项研究中,科学家们追踪了美国的金翅莺,发现这些鸟飞到 1500公里远的地方躲避海啸,这场
海啸造成 35人死亡,损失超过 10亿美元。这表明他们提前听到了风暴系统的声音)”可推知,作者
提到 2014年的研究是为了证明鸟类确实可以提前感知自然灾害。故选 A。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““Even if the attempt to develop a bird-based tsunami early warning
system fails, the project will still help scientists protect birds. In that sense, the research has already yielded
results,” Jiguet said.(“即使开发基于鸟类的海啸预警系统的尝试失败了,该项目仍将帮助科学家保护
鸟类。从这个意义上说,这项研究已经取得了成果。”Jiguet说)”可推知,Jiguet认为他们的研究是值
得的、有意义的。故选 C。

us avoid disasters. (Chardon想知道,了解塍鹬如何导航是否可以帮助我们避免灾难)”及第二段中的
“This January, a team from France’s National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) began to test Chardon’s
idea. Researchers led by Frédéric Jiguet equipped 56 birds of five species with cutting-edge animal tracking
technology.(今年 1月,来自法国国家自然历史博物馆(NMNH)的一个团队开始测试 Chardon的想法。
由 Frédéric Jiguet领导的研究人员为 5个物种的 56只鸟类配备了尖端的动物追踪技术)”可知,本文
主要介绍了法国国家自然历史博物馆的一个团队正在使用追踪器观察鸟类,目的是发现它们能够提
{#{QQABDQwAggCgAIBAABhCAw0QCAAYkBAAAIgOQFAQsAIAwAFABCA=}#}
前感知自然灾害的原因并运用到人类生活中。由此可知,D项 Can birds give a clue to natural

故填 which。
