It’s a feeling you’ve experienced before. You worry about whether you’ve prepared well, and about the possible failure. The scientists Ramirez and Beilock have found that students can do better in exams if they spend ten minutes writing about their worries before the exams.
In order to make people believe their idea, the two scientists did the experiment (实验) in the laboratory at first. They asked 20 college students to take a math test. Before the test, half of the students sat quietly and the other half wrote about their feelings on the coming test. They found that the writing group did much better than the students who sat quietly. Their marks were 12% higher.
But did writing really do the trick in our real life To answer it, the two scientists ran the experiment again before a real exam. This time, they worked with 51 ninth-grade students. The students were required to have a 10-minute writing exercise before the exam. Half of them had to write about their thoughts on the coming exam, while the other half had to write about an unrelated (不相干的) topic. Their final scores showed that if the students wrote about unrelated topics, their scores were lower, if they wrote about their worries, their bad feelings had not much influence on their marks.
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears at once before an exam Ms. Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and so on. It still improves their performance.

Minor Snow (小雪) is the 20th solar term in the traditional Chinese solar calendar, marking when light snow falls and temperatures drop. This year, Minor Snow starts on November 22 and ends on December 6. During this time, snow mainly falls in northern China, where temperatures drop below zero. The first snow along the Yellow River often appears now. While snow at night may freeze, it typically melts during the day as the earth is not yet frozen enough. As the weather turns colder, people begin to change their clothing and lifestyle. In northern China, winds from the northeast grow stronger, making it sensible (合理的) to start wearing hats and scarves to keep warm. According to an old Chinese saying, “The head is the place where all passages (通道) of the body gather”, which highlights the importance of protecting the head from the cold.
Minor Snow also brings changes to people’s diet. Indoor heating during this time creates dry air, leading to discomfort such as dry mouth or nose. Traditional Chinese medicine recommends drinking hot soups to counteract the “inner heat.” Popular soups include cabbage and tofu soup, spinach (菠菜) and tofu soup, and mutton and radish (萝卜) soup. In Southern China, people enjoy glutinous rice (糯米) cakes, which were traditional offerings to the bull god and have become a seasonal delicacy (美食).
With the temperature dropping sharply, it is also the perfect time to make preserved pork. This tradition, developed when storage conditions were poor, allows families to enjoy flavorful meat during winter. Many believe preserved pork tastes even better than fresh meat. Similarly, pickled (腌制的) vegetables are prepared during Minor Snow, especially in places like Nanjing, where they have been a winter staple for centuries due to limited access (获取有限) to fresh produce.
Minor Snow reflects the wisdom of adapting to seasonal changes, blending practical traditions with health-conscious practices to prepare for the colder months ahead.

49.What makes people drink soups during Minor Snow

In the West, people are quite open about their feelings. They show their feelings through their bodies. In order to show their kindness and friendliness, many people hug or kiss each other when they meet. They don’t usually shake hands. It is quite different from people in Asia. They only shake hands with each other when they meet for the first time or at work. It is polite for people to say “thank you” very often, even between families. When two Americans are talking, they don’t stand or sit too close. They usually look at each other in the eyes during the conversation. They think it’s polite and necessary. Dear Frank,
It’s great that you will come to China. Let me give you some advice about Chinese customs and table manners.
When there are elderly people on the table, we can’t eat first because it is impolite. Please don’t make any noise while eating. Chinese people eat with chopsticks. So there are some events that need to be noted here. Never use your chopsticks to hit an empty bowl. Never insert chopsticks into food or point them at others. Here, you’re supposed to shake hands with the hosts when you meet each other for the first time. And if you bring some gifts for hosts, it will be a good start. You can say “ni hao” to them. When you go out with people, you should tell the host where you go and with whom you go. If you attend a birthday party, you will eat longevity noodles. In China, it is very important to eat longevity noodles on birthdays because it is a symbol of longevity. Remember: When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
Have a safe trip, and I look forward to meeting you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
