The Coming of Age Ceremony in Ancient China
In ancient China, the coming-of-age ceremony was an essential ritual for a child that had grown up. It dates back to the Zhou Dynasty, with a history over 2,000 years. The purpose of the ceremony was to put the initiate through various difficulties, and finally bring them into adult society. According to the Book of Rites (《礼记》) records, males should take part in a capping ceremony (冠礼) at 20, while female a hairpin ceremony (笄礼) takes place at 15. Both were hosted by the elderly of the clan (家族) according to tradition.
The Capping Ceremony for 20-year-old young men consisted of several procedures. The hair of the young man should be done up and pinned. Then three caps of different materials which carried different meanings should be placed on the youth’s head. After this, the father or other seniors would appoint an alias (取字) to the new adult apart from his name. Only those men who had been through the “Three Caps Ceremony” and had an alias could get married.
Capping Ceremony
The hair-pinning ceremony would be held when a girl was 15 years old. At the ceremony the mother or another senior did up and pinned the girl’s hair. This change of hairstyle meant that the girl had reached maturity (成熟) and can get married.

A coming-of-age ceremony is an event that marks the time when a young person moves from childhood to adulthood.
In Ancient China, people held a traditional “capping ceremony” for a man at the age of 20 and a “hair-pinning ceremony” for a woman around her 15th birthday. 如果周围的人毫无理性地向你发难,
你仍能镇定自若保持冷静;

你仍能自信如常并认为他们的猜忌情有可原;
如果你能耐心等待不急不躁,
或遭人诽谤,却不以牙还牙,
或遭人憎恨,却不以恶报恶,
既不装腔作势,亦不气盛趾高;
……
如果你跟平民交谈而不变谦虚之态,
亦或与王侯散步而不漏谄媚之颜;
如果敌友都无法对你造成伤害;
如果众人对你信赖有加却不过分依赖;
如果你能惜时如金利用每一分钟不可追回的光阴,
那么,你的修为就会如天地般博大,
并拥有了属于自己的世界,
更重要的是:孩子,你成为了真正顶天立地的人!
