资源简介 (共23张PPT)Unit 6Unit 6SurvivalTo look at pictures and talk about what happens in the pictures. To discuss what difficulties people would have surviving in these situations. To watch a video about all kinds of difficulties in the work and life of the expedition members in Antarctica. To read the famous sayings and talk about what you’ve learned.Look at the pictures and answer the questions.1. What does each picture show 2. What difficulties would people have surviving in these situations The picture shows that an earthquake has happened. The road is cut off.People would find it difficult to leave the area to find safety, or to receive supplies such as food, water, medicines and fuel. Power and communications may have been cut off by the earthquake. There is a risk of further quakes via an aftershock.1. What does each picture show 2. What difficulties would people have surviving in these situations The picture tells us that a disease has broken out and is probably spreading.People may face difficulties such as quarantine (检疫隔离期), shortage of hospital services and panic-buying of essential medicines, food or other supplies. There may be misinformation and panic.1. What does each picture show 2. What difficulties would people have surviving in these situations In the picture, we can see a ship sinking.People who are unable to escape the ship on a lifeboat face the immediate dangers of drowning or of dying from exposure. Those who do escape on a lifeboat need to ration (定量供给、配给) their food and water, and hope for rescue as soon as possible.1. What does each picture show 2. What difficulties would people have surviving in these situations The picture shows us a dense jungle.People would find it difficult to travel and navigate. It would also be difficult to find food and water. Wild animals and venomous insects are also potential problems.1. What does each picture show 2. What difficulties would people have surviving in these situations In this picture, we can see an astronaut in space.Space is an extreme environment for human beings. They face danger from extreme temperatures, low pressures and radiation. They must carry everything they need with them, even air. The lack of gravity makes simple actions such as eating, drinking, moving and even sleeping difficult. Anyone who spends too long in a zero-gravity environment risks losing bone and muscle mass.1. What does each picture show 2. What difficulties would people have surviving in these situations The sixth picture shows us a severe drought.Without water, people and livestock face death within a short period of time. In addition to water shortages, drought causes crop failure, so people would face food shortage as well. This could affect people who do not live in the drought-affected area. Severe food shortages can cause famine, migration, collapse of social order and war.Work in groups to talk about what you would do if you are in these situations.1. Look at the picture and guess where it is.Pre-watching2. Work in groups and discuss possible difficulties living or working there and how to overcome them.AntarcticaWatch the video and answer the questions.Read the questions first and guess what you may watch in the video.Take notes of the key points when watching the video.Tips1. Where do the people in the video live The people in the video live in Antarctica.2. What difficulties do they face How do they overcome those difficulties People living in Antarctica face a lot of difficulties.1) They have to endure extreme weather including freezing temperature, fierce winds and strong blizzards. When they go outside the stations, they wear special clothes for protection. As weather can change from calm to white-out in minutes, people have to take a special survival bag in case they are trapped outside overnight.2) One of the most difficult things is the long days and nights. They may cause issues with the scientists’ body clocks. The darkness also makes outdoor research impossible.3) It is almost impossible to grow fresh produce there because of the extreme conditions, and most food is imported. It is difficult for scientists to have a varied diet, and they can’t get enough fresh fruit and vegetables.4) They have to face psychological problems. To keep the scientists psychologically healthy, research stations offer activities and entertainment including live music and lectures.Read the famous sayings belowand talk about what you’ve learned. The beauty of the soul shines out when a man bears with composure one heavy mischance after another, not because he does not feel them, but because he is a man of high and heroic temper.——Aristotle人们泰然自若地承受接踵而至的灾难,并不是由于感觉迟钝,而是由于具有崇高和英勇的品质,这时,尽管在厄运中,心灵美仍放射出灿烂光辉。——亚里士多德Adapt or perish, now as ever, is Nature’s inexorable imperative.——H.G.Wells适者生,不适者灭,这是自然界一如既往、永不变更的规律。—— 赫伯特·乔治·威尔斯Life is the most important thing for us. We should protect it very well in our lives. Some people go and back. We often miss many good things, so we often waste time on regrets. We live in the moment, so we have to try our best to do some things. When we become older and older, we can get some beautiful memories. Life is a huge gift. We get it and use it. Let us protect it, for it is worth to be.What You’ve Learned1 What part of the life there would be most challenging for you Why Write your key words and share with the class.2 Preview the part: Understanding ideas. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源列表 Living and working in Antarctica.mp4 Starting out.pptx
