Montreal is the second-most populated city in Canada. It’s about 599 kilometers from New York City (NYC) by road, and you can travel there by bus.
Why should you choose to take the bus
The cheapest way to travel to Montreal from NYC is by bus. The bus company operates daily service, with one-way fares sometimes as low as $65. The bus departs from Port Authority and arrives at the Montreal long-distance bus station in eight and a half to nine and a half hours.
When is the best time
Unless you like the idea of cold temperatures, then summer is the best time to visit Montreal. The peak tourist season runs from June through August, so your best bet for smaller crowds is probably May or September when hotels have more vacancies and the weather is mild enough to be outside.
What can you do
Montreal is a great entry point to broader Canada travels, but there is a lot to do right in the city, such as visiting the ornate Notre-Dame Basilica, or exploring the Montreal Botanical Garden. Similarly, the Montreal Biodome, located at Olympic Park, replicates four American ecosystems, all indoors. When it’s nice outside, you can get a good viewing platform from the top of Mount Royal.
What must be kept in mind
Upon reaching the Canadian border, all bus passengers will need to get off the bus and pick up their belongings and luggage, which will be inspected by Canadian officials. Unclaimed bags will be removed. You’ll be asked what the reason is for your trip. Once the process is finished, you’ll return your bags to the bus and continue your journey. Make sure you have reviewed the immigration and customs information to ensure you carry the proper documents.
21. What is the advantage of taking the bus to Montreal from NYC
A. Saving money. B. Great service.
C A beautiful view. D. Exciting experience.
22. Which place is the best one to get a full view of Montreal
A. Montreal Biodome. B. Mount Royal.
C. Notre-Dame Basilica. D. Montreal Botanical Garden.
23. Why do the passengers get off the bus as soon as they reach Canada
A. For a headcount. B. For luggage inspection.
C. For changing travel buses. D. For getting unclaimed bags.
B
Christine Rowsey spent three tough years working full-time as a financial risk analyst to support her 5-year-old son Bryson, while taking evening courses at a community college to pursue her nursing dream. “I didn’t have any money or possessions left; all I had was a fragile dream,” she recalled with emotion.
That dream took root three years earlier when she suffered the tragic loss of her husband, who had been diagnosed with cancer. Her husband fought for his life in the intensive care unit for seven months, undergoing more than a dozen operations. However, in the end, he left Christine forever. It was the sincere and constant support from the hospital’s nursing staff during that painful experience that inspired her to quit her original job and determinedly pursue a nursing career to help others the way she had been helped.
Just as she was about to start formal nursing courses, her misfortunes brought her progress to a halt — her car was repossessed (收回). She couldn’t travel to class. Luckily, she discovered Volunteers of America (VOA) Michigan’s “Cars Helping People” program in Pontiac, which provided donated vehicles at fair prices for people in need, and she worked out a reasonable payment plan.
She then enrolled in Oakland University’s one-year licensed practical nursing program, but she struggled with heavy tuition fees and the double pressure of studying hard as a top student and taking good care of Bryson. Another program run by VOA, the Health Profession Opportunity Grants, came to her rescue. It not only covered her full tuition but also offered an allowance for Bryson’s daily needs like food and gas, and even paid for her certification test fees.
With the guidance from VOA’s employment specialist Rene DeLoach, who supported her through coursework, license application and job hunting, Christine finally achieved her goal. Now working as a licensed practical nurse at Riverview Health in Detroit, she is already pursuing her Registered Nurse certificate and sharing her inspiring story with young people. “VOA helped me rewrite my life exactly the way I wanted,” she said gratefully.
24. Why did Christine decide to work as a nurse
A. To care for her son. B. To inspire patients.
C. To repay the kindness. D. To earn stable income.
25. What did VOA mean to Christine
A. A life changer. B. A famous charity.
C. A training institution. D. A belief in her heart.
26. Which of the following can best describe Christine
A. Determined. B. Brilliant. C. Creative. D. Confident.
27. What does Christine’s story show
A. He who laughs last laughs longest.
B. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
C. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
D. When the going gets tough the tough get going.

As the U. S. Midwest was experiencing another heat wave, temperatures and humidity (湿热) in the region were being further fueled by “sweating” corn. If you didn’t have sweaty produce on your 2025 bingo card, you’re not alone; but “corn sweat” is a real phenomenon that adds moisture (水分) to the atmosphere and makes hot conditions even hotter and more unpleasant.
It’s just one unexpected way in which human activities, from agriculture to deforestation and pollution, can have surprising effects on regional weather patterns, sometimes enhancing the impacts of climate change.
Corn, like other plants, uses a process called evapotranspiration to draw water from the soil, take what it needs to function, and release the rest into the atmosphere via evaporation (蒸发). The higher the temperature, the more water corn needs, and the greater amount of water that evaporates.
Just one acre of corn can release 3,000 to 4,000 gallons of moisture in a day, according to the U. S. Geological Survey. An oak (橡树) tree, by comparison, can transpire about 40,000 gallons of moisture in a year, an average of about 109 gallons per day.
“Any place you have corn fields and it’s hot, you get corn sweat,” says meteorologist Dale Mohler. “In a state like Iowa, where approximately 24 million acres of land are devoted to growing corn and soybeans, it can bump the humidity on a hot day by up to 30 or 40 percent.”
With climate warming comes a constant feedback circle: Warmer weather in the Midwest is also leading to more precipitation, meaning that there is more water in the soil for corn to absorb and transpire, which adds more water vapor to the air and further fuels warming.
The increased humidity from corn sweat not only makes heat waves even more uncomfortable, but it can also be dangerous. “When the air is dry, you sweat and the evaporation cools you off,” says Mohler. “But that doesn’t work as well in humid conditions, because there is so much moisture in the atmosphere already. That’s why you feel that much more miserable when it’s humid as well as hot.”
28. What is the direct effect of “corn sweat”
A. Easing the heat wave. B. Increasing air humidity.
C. Reducing corn production. D. Impacting human activities.
29. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning the oak tree
A To describe oak’s low evaporating speed.
B. To compare the growth of corn and oak.
C. To introduce how much water corn needs.
D. To highlight corn’s high moisture release.
30. What does the underlined word “precipitation” in paragraph 6 mean
A. Heat. B. Consumption. C. Energy. D. Rainfall.
31. Why does humidity make people uncomfortable
A. It adds moisture to the soil. B. It causes people to sweat more.
C. It is bad for sweating. D. It raises body temperature.
D
Until recently, when scientists studied cells from people and animals, they often had to examine large samples, producing an average of results from many kinds of cells. The process was like trying to learn about bananas by studying a smoothie — a drink made from different types of fruit.
In recent years, scientists have developed methods that let them directly study the activity of cells and the genetic structure of individual cells. Single-cell analysis is the term for a group of techniques that scientists have developed for isolating or separating cells from living organisms. Scientists can study genetic material in each cell and learn about the relationships between cells. The result, notes the journal Science, is that researchers can follow the development of people and other organisms in incredible detail.
Francis Collins, who is the former director of the National Institutes of Health, recently noted the importance of such techniques for understanding human beings. “Single-cell analysis is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of our biology and health,” he said.
Jonathan Weissman is a stem cell biologist at the University of California San Francisco. He notes that single-cell analysis lets scientists ask much more detailed, exacting questions than they could in the past. “It’s like a flight recorder, where you are watching what went wrong and not just looking at a snapshot at the end,” he said. “We can ask questions at a resolution that was just not possible before.”
Nicholas Navin is a professor from the MD Anderson Cancer Center. He uses single-cell DNA studies to discover patterns of mutations in cells of a cancerous tumor. These studies let Navin recreate when and where those mutations appeared as the tumor developed. That information helps him identify cells that contain combinations of mutations that make them the deadliest. “In the future, such research could be used to help identify what treatments to use for certain patients,” Navin said. The research might also help doctors follow how well their treatments are working against a cancer over time.
32. What was the shortcoming of the previous way to study cells
A. Generating a set of identical results.
B. Failing to research individual cells accurately.
C. Requiring scientists to study bananas directly.
D. Focusing on separating cells from living organisms...
33. What can we learn about single-cell analysis from paragraph 2
A. It allows learning about creatures’ relationships.
B. It is a simple method for researching people’s cells.
C. It helps scientists know creatures more thoroughly.
D. It mainly focuses on studying mixed cell samples.
34. What do the accounts in the last three paragraphs imply
A. Doctors will find a treatment for cancers soon.
B. Many scientists began to focus on studying cells.
C. There are many challenges of the new techniques.
D. The new techniques have great application potential.
35. Which can be the best title for the text
A The Previous Research into Human Cells
B. A Major Breakthrough in Cancer Research
C. Single-Cell Analysis: A Biological Revolution
D. Genetic Material: A Global Research Project

Every winter, after the first snowfall, skiers and snowboarders head to ski slopes (滑雪场). Gliding down trails looks effortless, but learning takes time. David Handy, the director of a ski school, shares efficient learning tips.
Take lessons from an instructor
Largely self-taught, Handy spent years snowboarding. Each fall brought a new painful lesson. “The first time I was ever on a mountain, I remember for hours I was just beating myself up on the snow,” he recalls. But the day he took his first lesson as an adult 15 years later, it immediately made him a better rider. ____36____.
Get your equipment
____37____. After all, all the gear required could easily total over $1,000 and that’s a big investment to make in something you’re not certain you’ll love or even want to do again. Instead, Handy suggests renting the gear you need, which nearly every ski resort offers. Some larger resorts even have outerwear you can rent during your visit.
Be prepared to fall
“You’re practically guaranteed to fall when you’re a beginner, but there are definitely good and bad ways to fall,” Handy says. The biggest mistake people make, he points out, is that they try to catch themselves by putting their hands out to break their fall. ____38____. “Instead, tuck your arms and fall on larger, sturdier body parts,” Handy advises.
____39____
Sometimes learning how to ski and snowboard can be not only physically painful, but mentally exhausting. Falling, watching 6-year-olds cruise effortlessly past, and a lack of speedy progression can all get you down if you let them. ____40____. Give it at least three days of lessons and practice and don’t beat yourself up if you’re not where you think you should be.
A. Don’t rush the process
B. Overcome your inner pain
C. That’s what leads to broken wrists
D. These courses often need a great deal of energy.
E. So Handy advises you to go in with a good attitude
F. The lessons have the potential to cut a lot of time and pain
G. Handy does not recommend buying everything immediately

I almost said no when my neighbor Lisa asked if I wanted to join the weekend volunteer visit to Sunset Valley Senior Home, organized by our community center. “I really need to study for my history test,” I told her, avoiding her eyes. But Lisa replied gently, “It’s only a few hours on Saturday morning. We’re meeting at the bus stop near Maple Street at 9:15. You won’t regret it.” After a pause, I finally agreed, though inside, I still hoped to find a quiet corner later to review my notes.
On Saturday morning, I met Lisa and a small group of neighbors at the bus stop. We boarded the local bus and found spots near the middle. As the bus moved slowly through familiar streets, Lisa chatted warmly with Mrs. Green, who lived two doors down from us, while I sat quietly, gazing out the window.
After several stops, the bus turned onto a quieter road. About twenty minutes later, we reached a calm neighborhood and stepped off near a cheerful white building with a well-kept garden. It felt peaceful and inviting. A friendly staff member named Maria welcomed us at the door. Inside, sunlight filled the room, soft music played, and the air carried a faint, comforting scent of flowers.
I felt a little awkward at first and stayed close to the entrance. Some seniors were sitting together. Then I noticed an elderly gentleman in a blue sweater, sitting alone near a bookshelf with a newspaper in his hands. Lisa gently nudged me. “Go say hello,” she whispered with an encouraging smile.
I walked over slowly. “Hello,” I said softly. “I’m Kate, from the neighborhood.” He looked up. “I’m Mr. Anderson,” he replied warmly. “Please, have a seat.” To my surprise, we fell into an easy conversation. He told me about his years working on the railways, his travels across the country, and growing up in a small Vermont town. His voice was calm and his memories were vivid — filled with train whistles, mountain views, and old friends. I soon forgot all about the notes in my pocket.

The Future Transport
The future of transport will be shaped by smart and sustainable technologies. Advanced self-driving vehicles, which are powered by clean energy, will significantly reduce traffic accidents and carbon emissions. Moreover, integrated AI systems will manage traffic flow efficiently, saving people’s time and energy.
Despite these advantages, challenges will remain. The high cost of developing and maintaining such advanced systems may slow down their global adoption, potentially creating gaps between regions. Furthermore, the rise of automation, while boosting efficiency, could impact employment in traditional transport sectors.
Overall, by addressing these challenges through innovation and cooperation, the future transport can pave the way for a greener and more connected world.
