高效记忆妙招
Many people say that they have a bad memory, especially when they are older. How can we improve our memory?

Many people think that repeating things is the best way to remember them. While this certainly helps short-term memory (remembering a telephone number for a few seconds, for example), psychologists(心理学家) aren’t sure whether it can help you remember things for very long. A British psychologist seemed to prove(证实) this point when he tested himself on five prayers(祈祷文) that he had read aloud every morning for over 25 years. He found he could remember no more than three words of them! What’s more helpful, especially for remembering numbers, is grouping the information. It will be much easier to remember super long numbers in groups.

According to experts, there are many ways of training your memory. Many of them involve forming a mental picture of the things to be memorized. One method, which may be useful in learning foreign languages, is to create a picture in your mind connected with a word you want to remember.
Another method is to invent a story that includes all the things you want to remember. In experiments, people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this skill. When tested afterwards, they were able to recall 90% of them!

However, not all of us are interested in learning long lists of names and numbers just for fun. For those studying a large amount of information, psychologists suggest that the best way to form meaningful connections is to ask yourself lots of questions as you go along. So, if you are reading about a special disease, you can ask yourself questions like this: Do people get it from water?

( B )1. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Experts. B. Ways.
C. Pictures. D. Languages.
( D )2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Creating a picture is useful in learning maths.
B. Inventing a prayer trains your memory quickly.
C. Remembering long numbers is easy for people.
D. Asking yourself questions is helpful in improving the memory.
B
D

( C )3. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To show that the writer’s memory is bad.
B. To know some memory problems.
C. To share some ways of improving memory.
D. To show some memory experiments.

提升记忆小妙招
Do you want to have a better memory? When we study, we often hope what we learn can stay in our minds. Here are some useful ways to improve our memory.
According to experts, we can learn things better if we wait for a while before studying them again. After some time of forgetting, trying to recall what we learned will make it easier to remember in the future.

Studies show that taking a short break and doing nothing after studying can also help us remember things better. We don’t know exactly why this happens. Maybe it has something to do with the relationship between long-term and short-term memory.
Another study tip is to change between different topics as you study. This can help us connect different ideas. A former world memory champion says that imagining pieces of information in different places or connecting them with memorable pictures can make them easier to remember. This can help you make connections between different ideas.

Many other experts also suggest we should get enough rest and exercise. For example, getting 7~8 hours of quality sleep every night can help our brains consolidate(使巩固) memories. Things like jogging, swimming and cycling can make more blood(血液) flow to our brains. More blood means more oxygen and nutrients(营养) for our brain cells. This can make our brains work better and help us remember things better.

( B )1. According to experts, what can help us learn things better?
A. Studying continuously without breaks.
B. Waiting for a while before studying again.
C. Imagining information in memorable pictures only.
D. Jogging, swimming and cycling every day.

C

Researchers showed 40 pictures of strangers and a list of names to twenty-four people. 2. D The result showed that the people could remember up to 83% of the names but only 64% of the faces. According to the study, led by the University of York, this may be because faces can be only memorized through eyes. However, names can be both spoken and written down. 3. Rob Jenkins, a professor from the University of York, said, “Our study suggests that many people may be bad at remembering names. 4. 三、 (跨生物·金鱼智忆)阅读理解。
Goldfish are very popular as pet fish around the world. Do people really know goldfish well? A common idea is that goldfish only have a three-second memory(3秒记忆). But is this right? Now, let’s take a closer look at this idea about goldfish memory.
In fact, different groups of people, such as goldfish keepers and scientists, all find that most goldfish do a great job in learning and remembering.

Scientists also find that goldfish are smarter than we usually think. They finished a simple experiment(实验). They prepared a small fish tank with some goldfish in it. Every time they fed the goldfish, they would put a red Lego brick(乐高积木) into the tank. In the beginning, the goldfish were a little afraid of the red Lego. However, after three weeks, the goldfish could swim to the red Lego to wait for their food. After that, the scientists left the goldfish alone for a week. When they put the red Lego back into the tank, the goldfish still remembered it. This shows that goldfish have a good memory.
Anyone who has fed goldfish as pets knows that goldfish don’t just swim around without having any ideas.

Other scientists in Israel trained(训练) some young goldfish for one month to come to food at the sound of bell. After that, they stopped the training. Five months later, they played the sound again. The goldfish still remembered it and all came swimming back!
In fact, the memory of a goldfish is far longer than 5 months ...This means goldfish may remember things for longer. So, the next time you hear someone say goldfish have a very short memory, you can share this fact with them.
