四、 (2024·广州市白云区期中)阅读理解。
人与自我——健康生活
Do you sometimes feel lonely? Are you sometimes under great pressure(压力)? Do you sometimes feel sick? If your answers to these questions are “Yes”, you might not need a doctor. Instead, you might just need a pet. Pets, like dogs, cats or even birds, can make you feel better. In fact, many people feel healthy when they have a pet to take care of.

People who have pets often feel calmer(更冷静的) and less lonely than people who don’t have pets. For example, Juliet Locke has a six-year-old cat named Snowball. “Snowball knows when I have a bad day. When I’m sitting in a chair, she’ll run to me and I’ll pet her. She really helps me feel relaxed,” says Juliet. “Pets can help you have a healthy mind.”

Pets can give you a healthy body too. Dr R. K. Anderson is a veterinarian(兽医). He started CENSHARE(Centre to Study Human-Animal Relationships and Environments), an organization that researches how pets influence(影响) people. These researchers believe that people with pets are healthier than those without pets. For example, pet owners often have a lower risk(风险) of heart disease. Many pet owners don’t have high blood pressure(高血压) either. If you have a dog, you need to take it for a walk. Taking walks is also good for your heart and brain health.

While most people think of dogs and cats as pets, having birds and fish can also be helpful. In fact, people own many different kinds of pets. Researchers studied the influence of these kinds of animals on their owners’ health. The researchers found that some people actually felt more relaxed and had lower blood pressure by watching fish or by listening to the sounds of birds. These activities make people feel calm.

( C )1. Why does the writer write about Juliet Locke?
A. To encourage people to feed pets well.
B. To talk about how to choose a pet.
C. To show pets can make people feel healthy.
D. To ask people to talk about their problems with their pets.
C

( C )2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. CENSHARE mainly studies how to save pets.
B. A dog can be more helpful to people than a cat.
C. A person will probably get relaxed if he keeps a pet.
D. Watching fish can make some people’s blood pressure rise.
C

( D )3. (创新考法·标题归纳)What’s the best title for the passage?
A. How to deal with bad feelings
B. Pets can bring trouble to people
C. How to get along well with pets
D. Pets can help people keep healthy

二、 (核心素养·语言能力)阅读理解。
动物的交流方式
① Can animals talk? It is true that they are not able to use words like ours, but most of them can talk in their own ways.
② When the cat is happy and pleased, how does she show it? She purrs(发出呼噜声), and this is her way of saying “I am quite happy now”. If she is unhappy, or in pain, or hungry, she mews. If she is angry, she sets up her back and moves her tail from side to side. If she is treated in a way she does not like, her tail goes straight up in the air, and she walks out of the room.

③ If your dog is pleased, he puts back his ears, waves his tail and seems to smile. If he is angry, he growls(咆哮), shows his teeth, puts up his tail and the hair along his back and neck, walks around slowly and makes himself look very fierce(凶猛的). This is the dog’s way of saying “I am mad, and I have a mind to bite you”.

④ When a hen sees a dog coming near her chickens, have you noticed how she waves her wings, raises her tail and rushes to the dog? This is her way of saying “Be off, or I will peck(啄) you with my hard beak(喙)”. If she sees a hawk, she makes a strange noise, and her chickens at once run away and hide themselves. They understand what their mother says—“Quick, get out of sight, dears! There is danger near.” When she finds some nice food, she makes another kind of noise. The chickens know quite well what it means and run at once to share the food their mother has found for them.
⑤ In such ways as these, animals make themselves understood almost as well as if they could talk like humans. They tell their feelings to one another by acts and by sounds just as we do by words.

三、 阅读理解。
Fern loved Wilbur, her pet pig, more than anything. Every morning, as soon as she got up, she warmed his milk, tied his bib(围兜) on and held the bottle for him. Every afternoon, when the school bus stopped in front of her house, she jumped out and ran to the kitchen to fix another bottle for him. She fed him again at supper time, and again just before going to bed. Mrs Arable, Fern’s mother, gave Wilbur feeding around noon each day, when Fern was away in school. Wilbur loved his milk, and he was never happier than when Fern was warming up a bottle for him. He would stand and watch her with loving eyes, which could always light up Fern’s day.

For the first few days of his life, Wilbur was allowed to live in a box near the fireplace in the kitchen. But when Mrs Arable strongly objected, the poor little thing had to be moved to the woodshed(柴房). At the age of two weeks, he was moved outdoors. It was spring time, and the days were getting warmer. Mr Arable fixed a small yard specially for Wilbur under an apple tree, and gave him a large wooden box full of straw(稻草), with a doorway cut in it so he could walk in and out as he pleased.
“Won’t he be cold at night?” asked Fern worriedly.

“No,” said her father. “You watch and see what he does.” Carrying a bottle of milk, Fern sat down under the apple tree inside the yard. Wilbur ran to her and she held the bottle for him when he drank. When he had finished the last drop, he grunted(发出呼噜声) and walked sleepily into the box. Fern looked through the door. Wilbur was pushing the straw with his nose, quickly digging a hole to hide in. Soon, he disappeared under the straw. Fern smiled. What a relief it was for her to know that her baby would sleep covered up and would stay warm!
