One possible version:
Dear Terry,
I’m terribly sorry to hear that you didn’t enter the finals of the singing contest.
I quite understand how you are feeling now. You have been doing excellently and
your failure is not your fault. As we all know, failure is the mother of success. I really
hope you won’t lose heart and will get prepared to try again next year. I'm sure you
will win. Things can only be changed if you work hard. As long as you continue
practicing singing, you are certain to succeed next time.
Don’t hesitate to let me know if you need any help.
Yours,
Li Hua

Text 1
W: Have you seen the movie An Unexpected Journey?
M: Yes, it’s wonderful. You will be amazed at the special effects.
Text 2
W:What shall we do today?
M: I don’t feel like going out. The weather is so wet.
W: Personally, I am planning to visit a fashion show, but I would love to stay with
you.
Text 3
M: Look, Alice. Tom is over there. Let’s go and say “hi” to him.
W: I don’t think it’s Tom. He’s much shorter. That must be his brother Henry. They
look alike just with different heights.
Text 4
W: I made a dinner reservation for 9:00 pm tomorrow evening. It’s late, but the
restaurant doesn’t close until 11:00 pm.
M: OK. Sounds good. I might be a little late, but I should arrive no later than 9:30.
W: OK.
Text 5
M: How was your weekend, Nancy?
W: Not too good. I was about to leave for a trip on Saturday morning, when I found
my kitchen was ruined by the dirty water from the apartment above mine. I
spent the whole weekend cleaning.
M: Oh, that’s terrible.
Text 6
W: Hey, Tom, there is an excellent live show at the Big Boogie tonight. Let’s ask
Mark and Peter to come along.
M: But Mark has to finish an essay tonight. Peter will do some bird-watching.
W: Then let’s call some other people to come along instead.
M: Good idea. See you in half an hour.
Text 7
M: Hello, I’m calling to find out what time your store closes today.
W: We’re actually closing in half an hour at 9 pm. Tomorrow we’ll be open from
11 am to midnight.
M: Hmm, I won’t be able to make it there in the next 30 minutes and I need to
return a DVD before I go out of town at 10 am tomorrow.
W: We have an after-hours drop box, so you can come by after we close and return the
DVD. You don’t need to pay a late fee.
M: All right. I’d get it done today.
Text 8
M: So how long have you been living in New York City?
W: I came here from Los Angeles after I graduated from college four years ago.
M: Why didn’t you stay in Los Angeles after you left college?
W: I like experiencing life in different cities. When I attended college in Los
3
Angeles, I did part-time work and experienced life there. After graduation, I
wanted to know what life was like in New York City.
M: So do you want to leave New York City one day?
W: Sure. I want to go to Chicago and live there for a couple of years. Then I want
to go to some Asian countries. Do you like living in different cities?
M: I used to. But now I just want to settle down here.
Text 9
M: Hey, Amy! What are you doing over there?
W: Trying to finish my homework.
M: Come on. It’s Saturday night!Who wants to do homework on the weekend?
W: I have to. I’m behind in my class. If I don’t catch up this weekend, I’m in trouble.
M: You can’t do your work well; we have the TV on loudly. I know you just want to
watch the program with us.
W: Yeah, I can’t concentrate very well. My homework isn’t as interesting as that
show.
M: We can go to another room and watch it...
W: No, I’ll just go and find a quiet place.
M: Why don’t you take a little break? If you watch the show first, you’ll probably
do your homework better.
W: Maybe you’re right. I really want to watch the show. I’ll just get up earlier
tomorrow to finish my homework.
Text 10
M: My dear students, to begin today’s class, I’d like to recommend some
movies to you.
The first one is Good Will Hunting. It’s about a young man from a working-class
neighborhood. He often gets into trouble. One day, he solved a math problem that
the best students in a top university failed to solve. Students will be inspired to stay
in school and pursue their talents.
The second is Dead Poets Society. In this movie, Robin Williams plays the role of
an English teacher. He inspires several boys to love their lives. Students will become
inspired to live life to the fullest and appreciate teachers who push them to succeed.
The third is The Color Purple. It is based on Alice Walker’s novel The Color
Purple. This movie shows life in America’s poor south in the early 1900s. The movie
tells the tale of a young African American woman’s struggle.
The last is Schindler’s List. The film follows the true story of Oscar Schindler,
who saved more than 1,100 Jews during the World War Ⅱ. Students will learn more
about World War II and be touched by this story.
That’s all. You can watch them in your spare time. Now turn to page 48.
