Five years ago, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece did a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, 2 China, Belgium and South Africa. 4 and often wake up in the middle of the night. The main reasons of the problems are pressures ( 压力) from school or work and a fast pace (节奏) of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also affect sleep and cause poor quality sleep.

The survey also found that large numbers of people find it hard to sleep at night. The short term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating ( 专 心 ). If this happens for a long time, the risk of gaining weight and having a heart attack may increase.
There are many things you can do to 5 the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. Some can do less than this amount, but others may need more. Every person knows his own need. It is then a matter of good judgment to 8 his need. The first waitress, Janet, was very polite and helpful. She gave us free drinks for waiting so long. Our food also came quickly and looked fresh and tasty. When my wife had eaten most of her meal, she found a dead insect in her vegetables. She was surprised and wanted to leave. At first, the waitress told us it was a piece of garlic. When we told her that garlic does not have legs, she said sorry and took the food away.
We asked for the bill, expecting not to pay for my wife’s meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. The head waiter told us that he was on holiday.I complained again about the terrible cockroach. He told me Janet had finished work.He didn’t believe my story and gave me a bill for three meals. I argued with him but had to pay in the end.
The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like an apology from your impolite head waiter and a full refund( 退 款 )for our meal.It cost $68.Until then, I will not be eating at your restaurant or recommending it to anyone.

C. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题):(12 分)
Can a person make it rain? Many people believed that Charles Hatfield could. In the early 1910s, Mr. Hatfield traveled to many places bringing rain to farms and cities that suffered from drought (干旱). For 30 years, people considered him the greatest rainmaker in North America.

One of Mr. Hatfield’s most amazing rainmaking accomplishments happened in southern California in 1916. Mr. Hatfield offered to give the city of San Diego a hand with its water problem. He planned to create enough rain to fill the lake behind Morena Dam near the city. After the dam was built, the lake had never been more than half full, but the lake could hold 15 billion gallons of water if it were full. Filling the lake would help the city of San Diego with its constant water problems. Mr. Hatfield suggested that if he succeeded in filling the lake with rainwater, the city would pay him $10,000. If no rain fell, the city would pay nothing. The city agreed.
On January 1, 1916, Mr. Hatfield began his rainmaking procedure. It began to rain four days later. The rain continued for the next five days. The Dangers of Dieting
Thanks to our modern lifestyle, with more and more time spent sitting down in front of computers than ever before, the number of overweight people is at a new high. As people crazily search for a solution to this problem, they often try some of the popular fad(一时时尚的) diets being offered. Many people see fad diets as harmless ways of losing weight, and they are grateful to have them. Unfortunately, not only
don’t fad diets usually do the trick, but they can actually be dangerous for your health.
Although permanent(长久的) weight loss is the goal, few are able to achieve it. Experts estimate that 95 percent of dieters return to their starting weight, or even add weight. While the reckless (不计后果的) use of fad diets can bring some initial results, long-term results are very rare.
However, people who are bored with the difficulties of changing their eating habits often turn to fad diets. Rather than being moderate(温和的,适度的), fad diets involve extreme dietary changes. They advise eating only one type of food, or they refuse to eat other types of foods entirely. This result in a situation where a person’s body doesn’t get all the vitamins and other things that it needs to stay healthy.
One popular fad diet recommends eating lots of meat and animal products, while nearly no carbohydrates(碳水化合物). A scientific study from Britain found that this diet is very high in fat. According to the study, the increase of damaging fats in the blood can lead to heart disease and, in extreme cases, kidney(肾脏) failure. Furthermore, diets that are too low in carbohydrates can cause the body to use its own muscle for energy. The less muscle you have, the less food you use up, and the result is slower weight loss.
Veteran( 老 兵 ) dieters may well ask at this point, “What is the ideal diet?” Well, to some extent, it depends on the individual. A United States government agency has determined that to change your eating
habits requires changing your psychology of eating, and everyone has a different psychology. That being said, the British study quoted (引述) above recommends a diet that is high in carbohydrates and high in fiber(纤维), with portions(一部分) of fatty foods kept low. According to the study, such a diet is the best for people who want to stay healthy, lose weight, and keep that weight off. And, any dieting program is best undertaken with a doctor’s supervision(监管).

“Look at this tree. What can you see?” I looked carefully. Under the branch there were some letters and a picture of a heart. The heart was still there but the letters were unclear. “You might not be able to recognize the words. Let me read them for you.” She said softly,“It says Robin Holmes loves Mary Smith. Do angry people see red?
In English, when someone is very angry we say this person “sees red”, like a bull goes wild after seeing a red cloth. Now it turns out that “seeing red” is not j 1 an expression for angry people, but also a scientific fact.
Researches at North Dakota State University in the US found there is a connection between the color red and anger. Angry people really do “see red” where others don’t. And a preference for red over blue may even suggest a more hostile personality.
The study i 2 a number of experiments. In the first, reseachers asked a group of people which color they p 3 , red or blue. Participants ( 参 加 者 ) then did personality tests. Results showed that those who chose red tended to be more hostile.
During a second test, participants looked at faded images that could be regarded e 4 red or blue.
Those who saw red scored 25 percent higher on hostility in the personality test.
“Hostile people have hostile thoughts ; hostile thoughts are c 5 with the color red, and therefore hostile people see this color more frequently,” the researches told the independent.
Finally, the participants were told about imaginary situations in which they could take different acrions. Results showed that in these situations, red-preferring people were more likely to show that they would harm another person than those who preferred blue.
“An important m 6 from this research is that color can spread psychology( 心 理 的 ) meaning,”
the researchers said.
Where does this connection between the color red and anger come from? Scientists said it might be a matter of evalution( 进 化 ). In ancient times, poisonous p 7 and insects could cause wounds and bleeding. So it may have become instinctive(本能的) for our ancerstors(祖先) to link the color red with danger and threats.

Nowadays, everybody is taking selfies ( 自 拍 照 ). From your best friend to your favorite pop star, selfies are taking over on Renren and Sina Weibo. The word “selfie” was even named Word of the Year by Oxford Dictiouciries in 2013. But why do people feel the need to take them? And are they doing us more harm than good?
According to Dr Pamela Rutledge, psychologist(心理学家) and director of the Media Psychology Research Center in the US, posting a selfie online shows a biological need for self-validation (自我认可) .
Humans have an area in their brains that controls social activities. Receiving positive feedback (反馈信 息 ) on a selfie you have posted online can be the same as someone stopping you in the street and complimenting (称赞) you on your appearance.
The act of taking a selfie also puts you in a position of power. You are the director and the subject of your own work of art. It helps people feel in control of their self-image and can be a powerful tool.
But can it go too far?
Psychologists warn that spending too much time on selfies can affect people’s confidence, particularly for teenagers. If you are spending a lot of time choosing the perfect selfie outfit ( 着 装 ) or finding the right angle, then there could be a problem.
Likewise, posting selfies online can harm your personal relationships. The UK studies found that many people find it hard to relate to people who often post selfies online.
So next time you hold your smart phone to take a quick selfie, it may be better to drop it straight back into your pocket.
